Modern Lake District glamping pods among the trees, with exceptional views of Blencathra

Blencathra looms large in the north of the Lake District. The mountain, peaking at 2,848 feet, dominates any journey into the park from Penrith, with a series of steep spines running down from its crest. For generations the mountain was known as ‘Saddleback’ before guidebook author Alfred Wainwright re-popularised the Cumbric name. And, at the foot of Clough Head opposite, a new collection of glamping pods makes the most of this magnificent view in much the same manner. Owner Can Hodgson has called the pods not One, Two and Three, but Yan, Tan and Tethra – the old Cumbric for the numbers.

While their names may have a historic quality, the pods are anything but ancient. This is the real, 21st-century glamping deal. Set in a small wood – a mixture of mature Scots pines and a newly planted copse – the pods were added to the farm in 2019 and feature the likes of under-floor heating, en-suite shower rooms and a compact modern kitchen. Outside there’s a deck and a terrace with a barbecue, plus that ever present asset – the incredible view of mighty Saddleback.

The pods are in close proximity but don’t overlook one another, making them good for groups and individual bookings alike, while the surroundings are populated by rabbits and the occasional roe deer. The farm is a part of the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme, meaning it’s managed to actively encourage greater biodiversity, and kestrels, nuthatches and redstarts frequent the skies here too.

If the view doesn’t entice you out for a walk or bike ride then you might just have a screw loose. Ewe Love Camping Pods is perfectly placed for immersing yourself in the scenery, whether it’s heading into the traditional hay meadow and following the footpath up to the Old Coach Road and eventually to Great Dodd (2,812 feet) or heading across to tackle Blencathra itself. Those who know the mountain will no doubt have heard of the famously challenging scramble up Sharp Edge. “The crest itself is sharp enough for shaving”, Wainwright wrote. It’s well worth doing if you have the mountain skills.

It’s not all scrambling and heads for heights though. It’s a 15-minute drive to pretty Keswick, around the same to Castelrigg Stone Circles (thousands of years old) and 15 in the opposite direction to Ullswater for watersports and boat trips. Bring your dookers or hire a byat for the day. There’s a little more Cumbrian for you – ‘swimming trunks’ and ‘boat’. Then again, if you’re an offcomer you might never quite understand.

From the host
In a quiet corner amongst trees our three luxury glamping pods offer a relaxing base with stunning views of Blencathra. They are in an excellent position to explore the North Lakes, walk or bike from the door or just soak up the scenery and relax. Our Pods are locally made in Cumbria, they are cosy with underfloor heating the double bed and sofa bed come with linen. There is an en suite shower/toilet and a microwave and fridge. The pods are ideal for couples, each pod sleeps up to four. The car park is nearby. Highgate Close is a working farm that is run alongside Glencoyne, a National Trust farm where the owners live, on the shores of Ullswater. Both farms have traditional fell sheep, native cow breeds and Highland ponies.
Nearby attractions

Ewe Love Camping Pods is situated on the challenging coast-to-coast cycle route and cyclists passing through will find secure bike storage on the site. There are, of course, plenty of other popular road and mountain biking routes around, along with the endless list of Lake District hiking trails. The OS Explorer map you'll want for the local area is OL5 or get the Keswick and Penrith Landranger map number 90. The most famous spot, of course, is the whopping great mountain that you look out on from your pod – Blencathra – on which there are numerous routes for all levels, including the challenging scramble along Sharp Edge, which is not for the faint hearted. En route to Keswick one day, be sure to stop off at ancient Castlerigg Stone Circle (0370 333 1181), constructed at some point between 3,300–900 BC (during the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Ages). Ullswater is a short drive away and, being England’s second largest lake, has a huge range of activities and water sports to offer, including sailing, kayaking, and fishing trips. Rookin House Equestrian Centre (017684 83561) is a family-owned adventure venue with everything from air rifle shooting and archery to riding lessons and trekking.

Food and drink

Scales, a five-minute drive away, is probably the nearest place to quench your thirst. The White Horse Inn (017687 79883) has paths up Blencathra immediately from the beer garden. Threlkeld, a couple of minutes further down the road, is also a popular sport with scramblers who've gone up or down Blencathra's sharp spines. The Horse and Farrier (017687 79688), on the roadside, dates from 1688 and has a great atmosphere, while there's a quaint café in the village hall (017687 79501). In Keswick, we recommend Fellpack (017687 71177) for takeaway sandwiches and healthy evening meals, Bar eS (017687 75222) for Mexican tapas and good craft beers and Casa Bella (017687 75575) for Italian cuisine.
