Peaceful, eco-friendly bell tent glamping on the Ceredigion-Carmarthenshire border

It’s easy to miss the turning for Firecrest Valley. Down a narrow, single-track lane, where moss grows down the centre and bushes hug the sides, you can tell you’re entering a quiet location. “Gem of a little site”, the guest reviews read. “Hidden and peaceful”, others say. And, for 2021, Firecrest is set to be more secluded still, as the owners restrict the campsite for one year only to just their eight pre-pitched bell tents, perfect for campers on the hunt for a little more comfort.

On the site of a former golf course, you can be sure of a flat and spacious place to pitch at Firecrest, with grass any greenkeeper would be proud of. Since they moved here a few years ago, however, the family owners have also been busy encouraging greater biodiversity, planting hedgerows, saplings and shrubs to encourage the bees, and laying out a campsite that’s as accommodating to swallows and blue tits as it is to campers.

There are eight bell tents on offer in total, each furnished with futon-style beds, a scattering of rugs and cushions and with that all-important campfire-pit outside. A communal kitchen area houses washing-up sinks, a fridge and gas hobs for cooking, while gas-powered showers are piping hot and mean that, even though the campsite is eco friendly, you don’t have to forego the essential comforts.

To help with numbers during the COVID pandemic, there’s no ‘pitch-your-own’ camping this year but, even in ‘normal’ times, there’s bucket loads of space to hoon around and play games of frisbee or football. With numbers reduced, it's quieter still and every bell tent really has its own private slice of the space. A separate meadow next door, meanwhile, is assigned for dog walking, with dogs permitted in four of the pre-pitched tents.

Quiet and hidden isn’t the same as sleepy and remote. It takes all of about five minutes to walk to the nearest pub and there’s another couple of good pub options a half-hour walk away in Felindre, best reached by taking the slightly longer, scenic route through the woods. By car it’s half an hour to Cardigan, Aberporth and the coast and the same to some of the best walks in the Preseli Hills. It’s all there and waiting. The hard part is finding the motivation to douse the campfire and leave the space and comfort of the campsite.

Arrival days at Firecrest Valley are Friday and Monday.

2 Man Bell Tent
We had a brilliant time at Firecrest Valley. The site is incredibly spacious, the bell tents are well-equipped and generously sized and the place has a really laid-back feel - very dog and child-friendly too! The kitchen, shower and toilet facilities were all excellent and impeccably clean, with the lovely hot showers particularly welcome after a day of exploring. We'd highly recommend this place and will definitely be back!!

2 Man Bell Tent
We were super excited to arrive at Firecrest Valley for a weekend break and were not disappointed. We booked a bell tent which was beautifully clean and just as described, with cushions, futons, a cool box and kitchen equipment. The toilets and showers were clean, tidy and cleaned regularly during our stay. All the bell tents are well spaced out in the field to give plenty of privacy and each one had its own firepit and picnic bench which was great. We particularly liked that each tent area had ‘driveway access’ cut into the grass leaving the rest of the field with long grass for wildlife, which looked amazing. The play area had fantastic swings and a sandpit which my youngest enjoyed and managed to fly a kite. Would highly recommend.

Very peaceful glamping site, tents are set far away from each other, especially 'redkite' where we were staying, a good 50m away from the others, tucked away in a corner and with its own swing from a branch! There also is a play area with sand pit, play kitchen, fort, swings etc... Facilities are very clean and of good quality, showers are hot and powerful, cooking areas are spacious too. Everything is running on solar power and the toilets are dry ones. All very eco friendly, grass is left tall for wildlife with mowed paths for cars and pedestrians. There is a fire pit for each tent and you can buy firewood on site, supplied with kindling and firelighter! Plenty to do around too with lots of gorgeous sites to visit and plenty of water, fresh or salty, to swim in. you'll have to take your car everywhere as there is nothing locally... Closest big-ish supermarket is 30mn drive (if you need a spare duvet...) and the closest 24h hospital is 20mn away, always good to know! Highly recommended and a solid 5 stars!

From the host
Welcome to Firecrest Valley. We are a family run site with a passion for nature, wildlife and free range fun! We moved in to the Firecrest Valley site, as a family. We have been overwhelmed with the natural beauty that is found across the site and the wild life here has exceeded all of our expectations. We are so excited to be able to offer other people the opportunity to experience a snippet of our new home. Firecrest Valley is nestled in the peaceful Welsh countryside and couldn’t be more perfect for a relaxing getaway. We have large, flat fields that are ideal for camping on and perfect for the kids to run free and have fun! We don’t believe in cramming people in so you are guaranteed to have plenty of space for a game of football or rounders. Here at Firecrest Valley we are very happy to welcome dogs and we have a dog walking field away from the camping fields. We also believe that no camping trip is complete without an evening spent in front of a fire admiring the starry night sky so fires are encouraged. For those of you who want to enjoy nature at its best, but want a more luxury experience then we have bell tents for hire. These come equipped with everything you need for your stay. Whether you want to spend your days relaxing on our site or you are looking to explore the local area, Firecrest Valley is the ideal base for your Welsh holiday.
