Simple camping (with glamping options) just a stroll from the nearest Glamorgan beach – plus a brilliant little café to boot

So you know about Snowdonia, the Gower and the Beacons, and the Pembrokeshire Coast needs little introduction. But how about the Glamorgan Heritage Coast Path? Starting from Cardiff Bay's regenerated waterfront and spanning 35 miles westwards to the seaside kitsch of Porthcawl, this stretch of Wales' recently opened national trail takes in some of the country's most spectacular scenery. The sweeping golden beaches of Whitmore Bay, the famous sand dunes of Merthyr Mawr, the innumerable charming clifftop villages – it's a wonder the area isn't positively overrun with holidaymakers year round. But hey, we're not complaining, and lucky for us we've found the perfect coastal campsite base to explore this magnificent region.

Glyn and Philippa George know a thing or two about hospitality. Having run their successful five-star B&B to much acclaim, the Georges decided to share their stunning corner of Monknash with the canvas contingent. Opening up the adjoining brook-side paddock for a trial 28 days a couple of years back, the response was so overwhelming that the ever-generous (as you'll soon discover) Glyn and Philippa realised it would be a shame to keep it to themselves. And so Heritage Coast Campsite was born.

This tent and campervan only spot has space for just 16 privileged pitches spread across two paddocks on soft, level grass. With uninterrupted views of undulating Glamorgan hills and the sparkling Bristol Channel, you can almost hear the "oo ar"s from Devon on a clear day. Facilities are second to none, with a brand new stables block housing all the expected, immaculately clean ablutions and a fully licensed café – Teddy's Bar & Kitchen – that serves all the grub you need, from your morning cuppa and bagel right through to a sunset beer from one of Glamorgan's local breweries. The resulting campsite is a thoroughly chilled out, family-friendly site (not one for the stag or hen do!), with views to savour, a brook to meditate beside and, of course, that breathtaking coastal path to pick up. Pretty much ticks all the boxes then, eh?

Large Grass Pitch (Non-Electric)
Lovely site
Lovely camp site with good sized pitches. We were also able to hire a fire pit and purchase kindling and fire wood. Small bar on site. Toilet block with two showers and two toilets in each. Worth noting the showers require 50p to operate and 20p for the hairdryer. Charging available for phones and a big freezer for labelled ice packs and food. Staff were welcoming and helpful. There is a walk to a mostly pebble beach, through a nature reserve, which was really nice. Also a pub within walking distance along with a bus stop. Nearest village was Llantwit Major which whilst small was pretty and had a nice cafe and surprisingly more shops than anticipated.

Brook Large Grass Pitch (No EHU)
Don't expect a decent shower!
I stayed at this site 2 years ago. Since then, they have doubled the number of pitches but made no improvement to the toilet/shower facilities. They advertise 5 showers but in fact there are just 2 available to each gender. So expect long queues!!! AND the showers are awful - they run cold half the time and fluctuate wildly in temperature the rest of the time. In summary, the marketing of this site is very much better than the reality. A very disappointed camper 😥

Large Grass Pitch with electricity
A1 site
Friendly greeting on arrival. Great clean site with very good facilities. Lovely cafe bar on site serving breakfast drinks and evening meals. Easy to find but also tucked away and quiet. Good size pitches with plenty of space. A1 stay would visit again.

From the host
Glyn and Philippa George offer you a warm welcome to Heritage Coast Campsite. Our site enjoys wonderful uninterrupted views of the Heritage Coast and we are just 15 minutes' walk to beautiful Monknash Beach. Our facilities are clean and well maintained and, in 2015, Teddy's Bar and Kitchen was added to the site. We are particularly suitable for families and couples. Brook Paddock adjoins the campsite and is reserved for the exclusive use of visitors. There is a BBQ and Picnic area overlooking a pretty brook and 4 acres of secure paddock which makes a happy environment for children to play (when accompanied by an adult) and enjoy.
Nearby attractions
Pick up the Glamorgan Heritage Coast Path and head north to Southerndown and Dunraven Bay. It's popular with the surfers and just about everyone else come summertime, while Dr Who fans might recognise it as Bad Wolf Bay. Escape the crowds with a visit to the Heritage Coast Centre (01656 880157). The nearby Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes provided the backdrop to the epic Lawrence of Arabia and the village's charming thatched cottages still attract the film industry today. Chilled out Llantwit Major boasts a handful of cool little boutiques, and it's just half an hour from Cardiff. But for those wishing to indulge in some serious retail therapy, chi-chi Cowbridge – 'the Bond Street of South Wales' – awaits just 4.5 miles from the site.
Food and drink

Heritage Coast Campsite plays host to the excellent Teddy’s Bar & Kitchen, a fully licensed eatery, complete with log burner for chilly days and local artists work on display. In the morning, chow down to a home cooked breakfast, freshly brewed coffee, tea, hot chocolate and juices, with light meals and sandwiches also available throughout the day. Along with daytime essentials, Teddy’s bar also offers wide range of quality wines, beers, and ciders, of course, some delicious Fablas Welsh Ice Cream. Just 300 yards from the site you'll also find the excellent Plough & Harrow (01656 890209). With a fine selection of real ales (served from its charmingly tiny bar), decent pub grub, and live music on Saturday evenings, this timber-beamed old local is just the ticket if you fancy stretching your legs to somewhere off the campsite. The nearby Horseshoe Inn (01656 890568) in Marcross is another noted favourite for caskateers with local drops from the Gower, Kite and Tomos Watkins breweries. They also do takeaway fish and chips.
