Savage Glamping

Earl Soham, Suffolk, England
1 acre hosted by Lucy S.
Family-friendly glamping in Suffolk with exclusive site hire available

Savage by name but not by nature, this private Suffolk retreat features six large bell tents cosily tucked away within a three-acre meadow, itself hidden away along the outskirts of the small village of East Soham. Behind Savage Glamping’s assertive name — lifted from Lucy and Ross Savage’s enviable surname — lies a friendly and accommodating getaway, and an idyllic site to bring your family and friends, with it allowing exclusive site hire for ample exploration of its Suffolk surroundings.

Savage Glamping provides the kind of ideal location you get from camping but with the luxuries of glamping. Expect hot showers and flushing toilets in its two large, family-sized bathrooms, along with a communal kitchen boasting all you need for a home-cooked (or, in this case, home-away-from-home-cooked) meal. Your barbecue and firepit are also provided, letting you take away your produce from one of the number of local farmers’ markets, or even from the pre-ordered hamper you can book ahead of your arrival, expertly prepared by the site’s award-winning local butcher.

With this being Suffolk, you’d be right to expect some stunning coastlines at your fingertips; Southwold, Aldeburgh, and Thorpeness are all around a 30-minute drive away, providing some scenic days at the beach in the region’s most picturesque areas. If you’re bringing along the little ones, you’ll also be well-served with this kid-friendly site. Its on-site wooden play area, safe countryside setting, and the activities nearby including Framlingham Castle up the road and Landguard Fort a drive away are ideal days out — they won’t be disappointed.

This is family camping done easy, driven by Lucy and Ross’ personal understanding of taking your kids away with you. As the couple note, taking the young ones away can be as exhausting as it can be fulfilling, and by doing away with all the hassle typically accompanying a camping trip — pitching the tent, figuring out the toilet situation, finding somewhere to wash off a day’s worth of activities — you’re free to enjoy yourself in this quiet spot in Suffolk. Who knew camping with kids could be so easy?

From the host
Welcome to Savage Glamping, our small and very friendly (we’re only Savage by name!) glamping site, consisting of six large, luxurious bell tents. Nestled in a three-acre meadow, just outside the pretty village of Earl Soham in Suffolk, we’re perfectly located for adventure, exploration and fun! You’ll be surrounded by the great outdoors and a fantastic array of attractions – from woodland trails and coastal towns to local festivals and pubs. Once you’re back at base, let the kids get stuck into the games cupboard while you pull up a deck chair and enjoy a well-earned drink. With three young kids of our own, we know how utterly exhausting a family holiday can really be. So we’ve made sure that adventure doesn’t come at the compromise of relaxation, home comforts and a little luxury, to make it a perfect stay for everyone.

Kingfishers at Cretingham Country Park (01728685275) is less than a 10-minute drive away, this blissful hidden gem tucked away within 120 acres of countryside lets visitors cycle or walk through its land, or even indulge in some kayaking, rowing, or a spot of golf.

The beautiful seaside town of Aldeburgh is just over 30 minutes away, with pastellic villas lining its promenade and its popular sand and shingle beach backed by Moot hall, home to the Aldeburgh Museum (01728 567767). One of the more scenic coasts you could to venture to is Thorpeness, also around 30 minutes away, with its famous Meare (01728 832523) open almost 24 hours per day with over 100 boats available to hire, as well as kayaks and canoes.

Further out at around a 40-minute drive, guests can visit the English Heritage site Landguard Fort (01394 675900), the site of the last seaborne invasion of England back in the 17th century, and now providing guided and audio tours.

Food and drink

Savage Glamping helpfully offers pre-prepared hampers served from their award-winning local butchers, which should be pre-ordered at the time of booking or via phone or email with at least 48 hours notice. Alternatively, there are a variety of local farmers’ markets to peruse and bring back goods to the site, from Framlingham Market — less than a 10-minute drive away — to the market in Earl Soham itself.

The Old Mill House (01728 685064) in Saxtead, less than a 5-minute drive away, offers a friendly and comfortable pub in a beautiful 17th-century building. The Crown can be reached in around five minutes, too, and here you’ll find a lovely rural pub hidden in the villages.
