Eco camping in the heart of the High Weald and Kent's castle country

There's no boozing, big crowds or thumping music late in to the night. This is Glassenbury. Not Glastonbury. But there are a few things the two have in common. There's plenty of space, there's a focus on the eco-friendly and the setting, on a farm, is left for sheep to graze for the vast majority of the year. And, like Glastonbury, once word gets out, we've no doubt campers will be crashing the internet to bag themselves a pitch. Numbers here are limited to something more like 100 people, rather than 100,000. It's small, it's quiet... it's great.

New for 2021, Glassenbury Camping is set in the heart of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and expands over some twelve acres of land, with campers pitching wherever they please. Owners Raf and Maria see themselves as caretakers of the site, which they've created with careful consideration for the environment. They use renewable energy from solar and wood-fired systems, and toilets are of the composting variety. The mostly flat meadow, meanwhile, is surrounded on most sides by high trees and shaggy hedgerows, and what meagre slope exists is south-east facing, so you get fabulous sunsets on summer evenings.

In a designated corner you'll find the site’s three pre-pitched bell tents, each furnished with a double bed and side tables and uniquely decorated with its own selection up-cycled treasures (handmade bunting, a wood-framed mirror or perhaps a Moroccan rug and chest). Outside, you'll find a BBQ and campfire pit, something that Maria and Raf place great importance on. All campers at the site can enjoy campfires and, as evening falls, the general scent of woodsmoke and the happy crackle of campfires is the main soundtrack to life under the stars.

A particular bonus of camping here is Glassenbury's convenient location. It's less than two hours from central London and finds itself in prime walking and cycling country. The bridleway that runs just north of the campsite is part of the Long Distance Walkers Association's "Three Castles Walk", which lets you take in Sissinghurst Castle, Scotney Castle and Bodiam Castle all in one day and gives you an idea of how close they all are. Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest is also just a ten-minute drive from the campsite and it's less than half an hour to the village of Battle (the site of the battle of 1066) and the coast around Hastings. It's enough that you won't be able to do it all in one holiday. But then, like Glastonbury, you'll probably be returning year after year.

Grass Pitch
We've just returned from a weekend's camping at Glassembury and could not have asked for a more beautiful site, with more attentive (but not imposing) hosts. We shared the field with 4 other groups/families and had so much space. The field was lush and green and enjoyed incredible views across the valley. The showers and toilets were cleaned multiple times per day, and were brilliantly maintained. Non-smelly composting loos, hot showers that stayed hot, and one of the nicest washing up areas we've found at a campsite recently (with hot water for washing up). My only slight quibble was that the "dogs must be kept on leads" rule didn't seem to be upheld, despite sounding quite strictly imposed on the T's and C's. There were two dogs who didn't go on a lead once whilst on site, and whilst they were well behaved and friendly, they were running around freely, sometimes with one another, and having a child with a really intense fear of dogs after a horrible experience - this did give us a few upsetting episodes. I'm a huge dog lover and am more than happy to camp on sites that allow dogs, but for my 6 year old, those dogs charging about enjoying the space was a bit too much.

Grass Pitch
Spent a weekend with kids who found the forest area at the edge of the site completely captivating. The facilities are basic but in the best way possible, everything you need but nothing more. As another review stated, the only room for improvement would have been drier firewood. Great views, nice walks around and not far from London. Will return next season.

We stayed here three times over the summer. It's a lovely spot and never feels crowded. We loved the view and sitting by our campfire. The showers were warm and the toilets were great. At night we could hear owls.

We had a lovely stay at Glassenbury! Maria was incredibly helpful throughout our stay, and this is a very friendly site. Facilities were very good and very clean and well maintained. Site itself is a good size relative to how many campers there were, so it does not feel crowded or packed and you feel like you have plenty of space, and it is surrounded by trees and nice views. Fire pits are available on site to borrow to have a campfire, and they even have a card reader so you can purchase wood on site if like me you never carry cash! Close to pubs, great place for kids to play, feels incredibly safe. We loved our time! We will definitely be back if we are in the area! Thank you!

Beautiful views, and a well-managed site. Facilities excellent, clean and well maintained, and as described. Take the chance to stock up at the Hartley farm shop, and try to take in a visit to Sissinghurst Gardens…

Wonderful location and clean, brand new facilities. Very friendly staff, but I'd advise taking your own firewood as what was provided was sodden wet.
