Pop-up bell tent glamping in south Devon with little luxuries like complimentary marshmallows and breakfast to your door

Dream Glamping… it sounds a bit like a festival doesn’t it? It looks a bit like one too with a few key elements missing; there’s no stage; no pumping music and definitely no crowds. “I suppose it’s a bit like the VIP chill-out area at Glastonbury,” says Lucy, one of the expert event organisers behind this pop-up glamping site. That sums it up nicely. This is a bell tent camping site with stunning sea views, a stylish tented bar for the adults and an outdoor cinema for the kids.

This is what happens when you let a bunch of experienced event organisers loose in a field. There’s festoon lighting, communal campfires, on-site catering and staff who keep everything running smoothly. These are not your average campsite wardens who’ve chosen an outdoor lifestyle but work-hungry execs from a high-end events company. When all their events were cancelled in 2020, they decided to put their skills and their kit to good use by running a pop-up glamping site. The CEO and the managing director helped pitch tents, the senior operations team welcomed guests and everyone had a good time. So good, in fact, that Dream Glamping is returning for 2021 in a new and idyllic location.

This year, they are setting up their 31 bell tents on an organic farm high on a Devonshire clifftop. The location and the layout affords each tent a safe sea view. You’re a couple of fields, a footpath and a number of fences away from the cliff edge but that can’t detract from the scene that awaits every morning when you unzip the tent to receive your campsite breakfast. This is glamping for glampers; beds are made, electricity provided and breakfast is served. Over at the bar; campfires are lit, films are screened and drinks are poured.

It’s not just the hospitality that makes this place dreamy, it’s also its south coast location. Aside from the view, the space, sights and sounds of the surrounding farm; there’s the beach. The closest is a mere ten-minute walk away on the South West Coast Path (which, by the way, runs close by the site) but, for a nicer spot, we’d suggest you go further. Three miles east is elegant Sidmouth and the same distance west is charming Budleigh Salterton; both a lovely walk if your legs are long enough and a very short drive if they’re not. Hire paddleboards, eat Devonshire ice cream and then make your way back to Dream Glamping for a G&T at sunset. Campfires are lit, films are screened, drinks are poured and memories are made.

Nice location and views but this is really overpriced glamping. Not that near the beach, and not much within walking distance so relies heavily on car. Tent, toilets and facilities were not as you’d expect for the price - felt more like camping with hotel prices.

Bell Tent - e176
Being a big group of 15, we were warmly welcomed by the team and everything that we requested before our arrival (2xbbq sets with utensils, picnic tables and chairs for each tents, clean and well packed tents with extra beds, etc.) were all set up making our unpacking very easy and straightforward. We were also allowed to bring our own picnic table, tarp tent to cover us from the sun, and food & drinks which we really appreciated. The ocean views from our tents were amazing, toilets and showers were all well maintained, and the bar area was well looked after for those of us who wanted to stay up late with our own fire pits. Overall, Dreamfileds was one of the best and clean glamping spots that I've visited, even for big groups, so I will deffo recommend them and visit again soon!!!

Hi just came back from here and sadly we didn’t rate it all and thought it very overpriced and to be honest think we are owed some money back. On the first night our daughter’s air mattress deflated and my husband and her ended up sleeping in the van at 3am. Our other daughter’s sleeping bag got soaked (see below about leak). The staff did provide proper mattresses for the kids the next day but this ruined that night and left us shattered the next day. Also noticed our bed frame was covered in dirt. For breakfast the second day we were served rancid bacon paninis. Reported to staff who apologised and did provide extra croissants. For breakfast the third day several of us had bit of onion in our yoghurts. Our tent (4) leaked quite badly in a few places and a lot of the kids stuff got soaked. I didn’t report this as it was day 2 before I realised why stuff was getting wet plus didn’t see the point (we couldn’t face packing and moving and simply placed cups in strategic places after that). The walk to the toilets and bar was completely sodden. Two of us slipped at various points. Not great for middle of the night wee trips. Not sure why there was matting by the loos but not on main paths? The sinks for washing when we went were blocked and very dirty. Area in front of our tent had nettles and thistles (though noted thistles had been burnt by next evening so no need to mention to staff). On the plus side the staff were lovely and extremely accommodating. Have sent two emails about this and no response

Bell Tent - e176
The location at Budleigh Salterton was great - amazing views, but glamping is more than just bell tents with fairy lights and bunting. The tents were well presented when we arrived with tea, coffee and kettle, but it would be nice if these were replenished each day. There was no where to sit outside the tent other than two damp crumbling bales and a tiny table. There was an area for washing up but it was pretty basic and felt more like scout camp once the cheap gazebo collapsed and had to be removed (actually just dumped next to the toilets). The toilets and showers were just about adequate, but there were queues for showers and only 2 tiny hand rinse sinks - no basins for face washing or teeth brushing - a problem when you have children. Two of the mens urinals were blocked for the 4 days we were there despite notifying the staff every day - not pleasant. The toilets and showers should have be checked and cleaned hourly - there were not, and it showed. Overall the site could have been maintained better - tables and chairs cleaned neatly rearranged each morning. It was good to have a bar and pizza's on site, even if they were pricey - £5 for small can of Brewdog, £13 for a small not brilliantly made margahrita. Breakfast was a bit better, with a nice menu of fruit, yoghurt, granola and pastries - but pretty small portions for a family of 5. The staff were on the whole attentive and seemed to be trying their best but they seemed very inexperienced, and not particularly pro-active in making sure that the whole glamping experience was the best it could and should be. We expected a clean, tidy, well maintained site and facilities, reasonably priced quality food and drinks, 'luxury' tent, with lights and area to sit and have breakfast, but unfortunately this wasn't what was provided.

A stunning location with cracking views of the ocean and Budleigh Salterton below. A warm welcome on arrival and very helpful staff on hand. The breakfast was delicious and set the day up very nicely. Showers, loos and washing up area were well maintained. Hot water for washing up being a nice bonus. Enjoyed the outdoor cinema and hanging out in the bar. Pizza's were good too. Would consider going back next year for sure.

A warm welcome met us at Dreamfields. The site was well organised and in a beautiful location with fantastic local walks. The tents were quite close together and our tent was a bit cramped for 2 adults and 2 teenagers on blow up mattresses. The toilets and showers were well maintained as was the washing up area. The drinks in the bar were quite expensive given the captive audience and it would have been good to have a wider selection of DVDs.

So good, in fact, that Dream Glamping is returning for 2022 to its stunning clifftop location This year, they are setting up their 40 bell tents again on a farm high on a Devonshire clifftop. The location and the layout affords each tent a safe sea view. Nearby attractions

There are a choice of beaches within a few miles of site. The closest is Ladram Bay Beach, just a mile and a walk of about 15 minutes on the coast path away. It’s great for swimming and rockpooling and there are boats for hire too – but it can be busy as there’s a caravan park in prime position behind it. A little further, a four-mile drive or a three-mile walk, is another beach at Sidmouth, an elegant Victorian town with plenty of facilities including watersports, shops and places to eat and drink. In the other direction (south west) it’s about three miles to Budleigh Salterton, a charming town with a two-mile pebble beach where the River Otter meets the sea and a further five miles to Exmouth.

Food and drink

A locally sourced breakfast is served to your bell tent each morning and there’s a fully-stocked bar in the communal area. There’s a regular pizza night and alternative catered options throughout the week. If you fancy eating out, the village of Otterton is a ten-minute walk from site. There’s a pub, The Kings Arms (01395 568416) and a cafe/restaurant at Otterton Mill (01395 567041) which is recommended. There’s also a farm shop within the mill where you can stock up on local goodies. If you’re in Budleigh Salterton, try the fresh crab at The Longboat Cafe (01395 445619) on the seafront (three miles from site) and don’t miss the Devon ice cream from The Creamery (01395 442064) which comes topped with clotted cream. For a highly-recommended lunch or dinner in Sidmouth try the relaxed seaside dining on offer at The Pea Green Boat (01395 514152) or the Pynes Bar and Restaurant at the Bedford Hotel (01395 513047). For something completely different, head for the River Exe Cafe which is on a floating pontoon offshore in the Exe Estuary. You’ll need to get to Exmouth Marina (eight miles from site) and then, excitingly, take a river taxi to reach the restaurant. If you prefer to dine on dry land you might like to try Rockfish Exmouth (01385 272100) instead.
