Family-friendly, lakeside camping in Brittany's Armorica Regional Natural Park.

Fancy taking a break from the hum-drum and heading off to Brittany – for better weather, beautiful beaches and a spot beside a shimmering, mile-long lake? If you do, you’re in good company. Derbyshire couple Belinda and Andrew Heaney were of exactly that mind set when they quit the rat race and moved to the shores of enormous Lac du Drennec. Here, among the shady shrubs and ash trees, they run the reservoir’s excellent namesake campsite. It’s the perfect spot to soak up some continental sun.

In the north of the vast Armorica Regional Natural Park, a varied landscape that covers everything from the local Monts d'Arrée hills to the beaches and islands of Brittany’s western coast, Camping au Lac du Drennec is a family-friendly, pet-friendly campsite, set behind the lake’s watersports centre and a sweeping sandy beach. As a result, there is no swimming pool. Instead, families wander down to the waterside, where campers and locals happily bathe and picnic blankets dot the grassy shore.

The campsite itself has everything you need. There are around 50 pitches in total, half with the option of electricity, and ablutions – showers, toilets, basins and laundry facilities – are well kept. There’s a tennis court down nearer the lakeside (rackets and balls are available to borrow) and an indoor games room with books and board games you can borrow. The well-stocked shop, meanwhile, sells essential food and ice-cream, while those who are really travelling light can even book a stay in their pre-pitched and furnished bell tents, which have beds, cooking facilities and electricity.

Life beside the lake isn’t all about swimming and boating, though. There is, of course, essential holiday lazing around to be done, as well as land-based opportunities such as hiking in the surrounding forested hills or walking the seven-kilometre trail around the lake’s perimeter. With a car, there’s also the marvellous Breton beaches and the local market towns to explore. Or you could just wander a few steps to the waterside Restaurant Au lac du Drennec. A fine spot to sample the regional food and drink.

27 - Bell Tent - Bell Tent
Beautiful setting, brilliant hosts
Excellent location, beautiful lake to paddle board/kayak on with hire available if needed, 4 miles round so great walk/run, 2 small lake beaches with shallow area for kids to play in and small play park. A lakeside restaurant within 5 mins walk however we didn’t eat here. Stayed in bell tent which was perfect for 2 adults, 2 children, everything there to set you up for the week. Hosts were brilliant, very friendly, knowledgable and happy to help with anything. Great burgers served from snack shack on an evening too! Toilets and showers whilst worked very well, good showers with no charge, the block itself was a bit tired but cleaned regularly so no problem.

The site was wonderful - the woods gave us a great shade from the strong sunshine. The lake was fantastic to swim in and the walk around it was equally spectacular. The facilities could do with improving but the wardens were so helpful and friendly! We would definitely stay there again!

In need of improvement
We have a lot of experience of cool camping sites and although this is a good location and the proprietors were truly lovely there are some basics that were not up to standard. One male toilet is inadequate even with the use of the disable toilet. They were only adequately clean and generally cold/ Luke warm. The washing up facilities were unclean and again Luke warm. A pack of dogs roam freely around site and although seemed docile they were certainly a concern. Bread and pastries covered in flies which was off putting. However these points are all are easy to address and we hope it helps improve the sites to compare favourably with the norm.

Nearby attractions
As the name suggests, the campsite is right next to Lac du Drennec. There's a water sports centre behind the campsite where you can hire sailing boats, canoes, kayaks, stand up paddle boards (SUPs) and more, with lessons available for all levels. It's also an excellent spot for swimming. You don't have to get on or in the water though; there are loads or way-marked walking trails around the lake (7km around the perimeter) and in the nearby Mont d’Arrée hills. The highest hills in Brittany, the Mont d’Arrée are not mountainous but nevertheless worthy walking territory, with high open moorland (landes) and peat marshes (tourbières). They make up the main bulk of Armorican Regional Park. The landmark chapel of St-Michel de Brasparts lies to the west of the range. If you don't fancy walking you can drive almost to the top of the hill there, where the 360° views are fantastic on a clear day.
Food and drink
Belinda can provide a full breakfast (continental or bacon baguette, plus juice and hot drink) for €5 and can also prepare you a picnic if ordered the day before (prices depend on what you order). There are local shops and boulangeries 10 minutes drive away, with larger supermarkets at around 20 minutes. The water sports centre by the lake also has a decent café overlooking the water.
