Staggeringly spacious camping in a top notch location

Ashurst might just be one of the most picturesque campsites in England. Set in an enchanting woodland glade, surrounded by ancient oak trees, open grasslands, and free-roaming Shetland ponies, Ashurst offers some serious camping eye-candy. The phrase "location, location, location" certainly rings true here as this well run, family-friendly site is the perfect base to explore the countless walks and traffic-free cycling the New Forest has to offer.

Situated on the eastern side of the New Forest, Ashurst is run by Camping in the Forest, who manage several sites in some of the UK’s finest forests. Life here is wonderfully simple; there’s a relaxed, ‘pitch where you like’ approach so visitors have the choice of camping in the secluded forest, by the bushes, on the open grassland, or somewhere in-between. Facilities here are of a good standard too (with the addition of a recently refurbished shower block), however these can get busy over bank holiday weekends.

The local area is a walker’s paradise. Lasting a few hours, Matley Walk (under 5 miles) begins east of Lyndurst (the unofficial capital of the New Forest), and gives walkers a great tour around this unique and unspoiled environment. Passing ancient woodlands, open heathland, bogs and pine enclosures, you’re likely to encounter many forms of wildlife, in particular ponies, squirrels, rabbits and deer.

In case you needed any more persuading, the fact there’s several excellent pubs and restaurants nearby tops things off nicely. But of course, it’s the back-to-basics, woodland camping that sets this palace apart. And with that enchanting scenery and easy access to the glorious New Forest, Ashurst is a true camping gem – and thankfully not as costly.
