Rocks East Woodland

Nr. Chippenham, Gloucestershire, England
1 acre hosted by Rocks E.
Traditional camping with open fires. 35 acres of woodland to explore.

Most campers return to Rocks East for two reasons: the chance to sit around an open fire and to have the run of 35 acres of ancient woodland. Rocks East has a very distinct culture. On one level it is very much a traditional, basic campsite. It accepts small caravans and campervans but canvas is king. All campers may walk through the forest and the illustrated information boards educating novices about flora and fauna are a good resource for adults and children alike. In the midst of this natural beauty, is a sculpture trail guarded over by a wonderful woodman and, bizarrely, two large Easter Island sculptures, all carved from cedar wood. For the chidren there's a teddy bear house.

On the campsite, with the exception of busy weekends, you can pitch your tent pretty well where you like and this creates a chilled, informal vibe. Back in the forest, depending on bookings, you can be forgiven for thinking that you have checked into a full-on adventure weekend. Don’t panic, as the outdoor amphitheatre is sometimes used by outward bound- type groups, although if you wanted to stage your own version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream no one would mind at all.

From the host
Situated on the Somerset/Wiltshire/South Gloucestershire borders, within an area of outstanding natural beauty, Rocks East offers traditional family camping with the added attraction of woodland walks, a sculpture trail for children and a small amphitheatre for group get-togethers.  Three fields at the edge of the woodland, sheltered by trees, provide a pretty and relaxed camping atmosphere.  At Rocks East we try as much as we can to adopt an informal approach to enable campers to enjoy their experience.  A particular feature of our campsite is the fact that we allow camp fires and provide specially made fire trays for this purpose.  Logs are always available and are sourced from our own sustainable woodland.  We have a little Yurt, which comfortably sleeps a family of four, and this is available for hire from the end of May.  We also have a larger Yurt situated just below the campsite in its own woodland setting, and this sleeps a family of 5/6.  Together with family groups, we also welcome school parties, scouts, guides and other youth groups.

Cycling or wandering around the country lanes in this area of outstanding natural beauty. The nearby villages of Marshfield, Colerne and Ford are all good destinations for those not requiring Tour de France-esque distances.

Food and drink

The Fox and Hounds at Colerne ( 01225 744847) is within cycling or walking distance and offers decent children’s meals (i.e. food from the adult menu but at smaller prices – we like!).  The White Hart at Ford (01249 782213) has the bonus of a riverside setting.  For lovely local shops selling local produce for local people (oh, and tourists) pop into Marshfield about five minutes’ drive away.  The Marshfield Central Stores (01225 891260) has a divine deli selling fresh bread and cakes from the Marshfield bakery, and Marshfield ice cream – all made in, yep, you’ve guessed it………..  But if supermarkets are more your bag, there is a Sainsbury’s in Chippenham, about six miles away, and a Morrison’s on the way into Bath.
