Camping and glamping on an eco-friendly re-wilded farm on the southern side of the Cotswolds.

With green hills, clear streams, cute villages and country pubs, the Cotswolds has a reputation for being rather lovely. So whether you’re looking for camping or glamping in the area, you’ll no doubt be after somewhere that lives up to that reputation. How about the camping and glamping at Oxwick?

Situated on a part re-wilded farm three miles from the market town of Chipping Sodbury, it’s certainly rather lovely. It has just five spacious camping pitches and five lotus belle tents a short walk away from Oxwick’s striking heritage farmhouse. It’s a relatively simple set-up with off-grid pitches, campfires allowed and a composting loo; all eco-friendly but not completely back to basics. There’s a biomass boiler for hot water and a wind turbine on site for power. Both supply The Quad — a communal, open-sided but undercover space for cooking, eating and generally hanging out. It’s mostly used by glampers, but the halogen hobs, fridges and wooden dining tables are open to all and make serving supper easy, whatever the weather.

With cooking facilities taken care of elsewhere, the pre-erected lotus belle tents are uncluttered and comfortable sleeping spaces, pitched in the wilder end of the camping field. Each is kitted out with beds, bedding and solar or battery-powered lighting inside, with seating and a fire pit outside for nights under the stars. Grass, which has been left to grow long, separates the bell tents and affords each glamping family, couple or group a little privacy. Camping pitches, meanwhile, are free-form and a short walk away in a mowed area of the field.

It’s a short walk back up the drive, which is lined with re-wilded meadows, and over the road to the 700-acre Lower Wood. It’s ancient woodland and grazing land owned by the Avon and Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust; the perfect place for a walk. There are more of those all over the Cotswolds with its honey-stone villages. Lacock and Castle Combe are two of the best and a short drive away. This area has long been regarded as a place for quintessentially English countryside getaways but with a location on the southern side of the Cotswolds, it’s also close enough for day trips to Bath and Bristol. Both are just 30 minutes away, making Cotswold Meadow Camping not just rather lovely, but rather convenient too.

Grass Pitch for 1 Tent
Relaxed, friendly site with great facilities. The communal barn was great. It meant that cooking was so much easier, we didn't have to bring as much stuff and we had some great chats with other guests over our meals. It was also a good place to read a book during the rain! Hosts very friendly, helpful and available when needed.

Ruimte en rust
Mooie ruime plek, rustig. Nigel is erg aardig en behulpzaam. De routebeschrijving was prima. De camping ligt 5 minuten rijden af van Chipping Sodbury, een mooi dorpje met leuke pubs en een grote Sainsburys.

Grass Pitch for 1 Tent
It’s a beautiful site, they’ve put a lot of effort into rewilding. So good nature. The Community and Family spirit was nice. Our little one one found friends to play with straight away. The kitchen and chillout space was decently equipped, quirky, and beautiful. All in all good vibes

Wonderful
Wow, what a wonderful place to camp! The Quad kitchen is like home from home, with so much space for a real community feel around every mealtime and evening. Everything seems to make sense about this campsite, and it is a magical place to bring children (there is a wind turbine at the top of the hill, and gorgeous bell tents that look like something from Burning Man. Nigel is a wonderful, kind and interesting host, and kindly answered our many questions about the history of the property and the local area. Don't hesitate, to stay at Oxwick!

From the host
Nestled in the natural landscape of a striking heritage farmhouse, just outside Chipping Sodbury on a remote site is our little glamping field and rustic events venue.   We put sustainability and the environment at the forefront of everything we do.  Our wind turbine overlooks our 40 acre site, and along with the biomass boiler, it helps us to be a net-zero carbon site, powered solely by renewable energy.  We have a small herd of rare breed Badger Faced sheep to do as much mowing as possible, who also produce a limited supply of our ethical lamb products.  We have set up a small ‘rewilding’ site, a 2 minute walk from the campsite where we are investigating ways to improve biodiversity. This little bit of wilderness is within easy reach of national trails, heritage properties, and lively cities.
Nearby attractions

The site is just outside the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is a great place to discover on foot, by bike or on horseback. Just a couple of hundred yards from the site entrance is Lower Wood, a 700-acre ancient woodland. If you fancy a proper hike, you can make our way through it to get to The Cotswolds Way National Trail. The market town of Chipping Sodbury is just over three miles from site and has a wealth of cafes and independent businesses while, Yate, just next door, has a few more familiar chains and a cinema. Westonbirt Arboretum is about 10 miles from site and Lacock Abbey and the Fox Talbot Photography Museum (01249 730459) are 20 miles away. Bristol and Bath, and their many attractions, are both under 20 miles away and about a 30-minute drive from site. It’s about the same distance to The Wave, a man-made inland surfing lagoon (0333 0164133). If you’re at the campsite in May, you might like to know that the Badminton Horse Trials take place just under four miles away.

Food and drink
The Buthay Inn (01454 299083) is just a mile away from site in Wickwar and serves food and drink most days. There are also lots of pubs, restaurants, and coffee shops in Chipping Sodbury. There is even a cocktail bar, Brook’s, which serves light bites and non-alcoholic drinks along with cocktails. Chipping Sodbury is also well-populated with independent butchers, bakers (the renowned Hobbs House Bakery) and greengrocers — and has a Waitrose too. There are more supermarkets in Yate.
