A pop-up riverside campsite in a classic Cotswold setting, 15 minutes' walk from the nearest pub

You don’t have to play cricket at this campsite. But it’s flat enough, it’s spacious enough and it’s green and pastoral enough that it somehow feels like an appropriate name; as English as Test Match Special and cucumber sandwiches in Hovis bread. The River Windrush forms the boundary, snaking along the eastern side, while the quiet road you enter and leave by, hidden behind a high hedgeline, borders the west. The only problem for cricketers is the grass, left wild and long in many places to maintain habitats for the bugs and birds. That and the tents, of course. You don’t usually see those on a cricket pitch.

Opened for the first time in 2021, Cricket Field Camping is a back-to-basics pop-up campsite with portable-style toilets, a few hot showers and drinking water taps. By and large it's the space and scenic Cotswold setting of the place that really makes it stand out. The camping meadow is blissfully quiet, with the little village of Temple Guiting 10 minutes’ walk north and the homely stone pub in Kineton 15 minute’s stroll to the south. The rest of the countryside is parcelled up into rolling fields and pockets of woodland, with the long-distance Diamond Way passing a few hundred yards away and the tower of a Norman church visible across the meadows.

Unsurprisingly, then, the campsite is a boon for walkers and those who can do without electricity and fancy facilities, but it’s a real hit with families too, thanks to its proximity to Cotswold Farm Park (two miles) and also the fact it allows campfires, which give the place that essential camping ambience. The river, too, makes the campsite a pleasant place to generally picnic, spend time and watch for wildlife and, though it’s too silty for safe swimming or paddling around, it makes a pleasing presence as you follow its banks on local footpaths, including the mile-and-a-half route to Ford, where a 16th-century courthouse (with dungeons) is now a characterful village pub with a wooden fort for children in the garden and inglenook fireplaces inside.

Wild Meadow Pitches
Beautiful spot, lovely views of the local church and very peaceful. Great base for exploring all the beautiful countryside in the area. There was lots of space and we didn’t feel cramped. Friendly owner. Amazing pub just ten minutes walk away, the best Tory chips ever. Highly recommend the Sunday roast at the Halfway pub nearby. BUT. You better be careful with the toilets. We’re used to basic facilities but the toilets were not good. Compost toilets are usually fine but these were smelly. Just two for the whole site and they didn’t appear to be cleaned the three days we were there, loo roll was not stocked up and there was no soap. Hot shower not guaranteed. No recycling facilities. Overall 6 out of ten, would definitely visit again if the toilets were improved.

Didn’t get a proper pitch
When I turned up at the site the field was very overgrown, ok if you are given a proper pitch but unfortunately there wasn’t any left, even though I’d booked well in advance. The weather was a bit wet which meant camping in wet long grass for two nights, which made the experience a little disappointing. The site is described as a Cricket Field, which to me would mean a well kept field. I was also disappointed as in the photos it shows a river but you can’t get to the river as it’s on private land. When I expressed my disappointment to the guy running the site by message on my return, he didn’t even bother to reply. Would not recommend.

Not so great.
I arrived at the campsite after paying for a pitch. I was told there was no pitch for me when I arrived. So, I had to pitch my tent in long grass. My shoes were soaked and everything got wet. There was no toilet roll in the toilets. Being called Cricket Field Campsite one would expect it to be mowed like a cricket field. Well, no....

Beautiful site
What a beautiful setting for a campsite. We had a lovely stay here and really enjoyed a wee walk in the evening along the small river and to the beautiful church across the field. Our first night was relatively calm, the second night was relatively busy and our only negative is that 2 compost loos for the quantity of tents is a little tight, needed to get up super early for the loo and to have a shower. We will however be back!

From the host
The site is set in the most tranquil and beautiful locations described in the 18th century by one writer as being as near to Elyisum as could be, the Windrush undulates through the private estate's 80 acres and flows through the fileds and parkland which can be seen from the campsite, with views to the church and the river the landscaped gardens can also be glimpsed from the site. The site is set on a working farm, so you are at one with nature.  It is picturesque and peaceful with no light pollution.
Nearby attractions

This is typical Cotswolds country – think rolling hills, sheep-dotted fields, woods and plenty of footpaths. It's a few hundred yards to the Diamond Way, which runs past Temple Guiding church, through the village and along the riverside, north, to Ford, where there's a decent pub (The Plough Inn; 01386 584215). In Ford, the Diamond Way also intercepts the Gloucestershire Way, heading east towards Stow-on-the-Wold, one of the most popular towns in the Cotswolds and seven miles by car from the campsite. The most notable attraction nearby is undoubtedly Cotswold Farm Park (01451 850307; two miles), where children can get hands on with the farm animals, but it's also five miles to Sudeley Castle (01242 604244), six miles to the English Heritage-owned ruins of Hailes Abbey (01242 602398) and five to quirky Snowshill Manor and Gardens (01386 852410), best known for its 20th-century owner, Charles Paget Wade, who amassed an enormous collection of eccentric objects that interested him and built a model harbour village around the garden pond.

Food and drink

There's no pub in Temple Guiting but there is a nice tea rooms (The Pantry; 01451 850577; booking advised) for fancy lunches and afternoon teas. The nearest pub is The Halfway House (01451 850344), three quarters of a mile away in Kineton, which has a lovely garden on sunny days, while it's a longer walk to Guiting Power (three miles) where there are two further pubs, a playground and a well-stocked Post Office shop.
