Pod glamping and tent camping while watching boats go by on the banks of the Grand Union Canal

When Otis Redding was sitting on the dock of the bay, wasting time and watching the ships roll in, it's not likely that he had booked himself into a campsite for the night to do so. But that’s (almost) exactly what’s on offer at Nelson’s Wharf, a peaceful family-owned holiday retreat in the Warwickshire countryside. Just like Otis, you can sit in the morning sun, if there is any, and you can sit when the evening comes, and you can do it on the deck-ing of your very own luxury glamping pod on the banks of the Grand Union Canal. Okay, so there’s no rolling tide, and the ships are more like boats, but the idea remains the same: time disappears and doing nothing is perfectly acceptable.

Located midway between the towns of Rugby and Royal Leamington Spa, the wharf is part of a 40-acre estate which up until the 1940s was the site of an industrial cement works. Looking at it now, you wouldn’t be able to tell; the whole place has reverted back to luscious green pastures and has recently been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. And, not satisfied with bringing back the wildlife, made evident by butterfly and wildflower conservation efforts, the owners now want to share the newly created haven with the wider public. To that end, they’ve put three kitted-out pods along the edge of the waterway.

The structures, beautiful timber scandi-huts, sit side-by-side in a peaceful field at the eastern edge of the privately owned land, looking out across open fields to the south and the passing boats of the canal just a few metres to the north. Each pod will easily accommodate a family of four, but there is enough space to pitch extra tents as well. What you get is essentially a decent hotel room with an outdoor feel; heating, soft mattresses, kitchen, shower, and toilet. There’s also a TV and WiFi if the passing boats aren't enough to appease you — make sure you do remember to wave at the boats as they slowly go by, it’s the customary etiquette of the high (and low) seas.

The campsite is within easy reach of historic Warwick and Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon for cultural days out, but nearby sees some nice walking routes which offer the chance to take in some of the local scenery. One of the 44 Millennium Way walks can be joined from Nelson’s Wharf, which will not only take you into the outlying countryside but also past a seemingly endless number of pubs along the five-mile route. And if you want to get even closer to the water, then Stockton reservoir is just over a mile away and has good carp fishing.

Nice informal relaxed greeting from izze soon after my arrival ,unobtrusive but helpful tips before she left us to it, which she like to do ! What can I say other than a superb clean well maintained site in a terrific location just a few yards back from the grand Union canal in the warwickshire countryside .. The pods were exceptionally comfortable ,cosy ,very clean, very functional ,nothing was overlooked, she is simply on top of her game, and she obviously takes great pride and joy in her pods and glamping site .. A very pleasant stay
What a beautiful place! We were greeted by Tom who made sure we arrived safely. Everything is well signposted so easy to find. The pod was very clean and well laid out. Everything you need is in there! Lots of utensils in the kitchen area. The bed was comfortable and the children loved the pull out sofa. The shower was powerful and very warm. The toiletries in the bathroom were a nice touch. A hoover, mop and fan were also provided along with cleaning supplies. The pod was very warm and cosy. It is situated right beside the canal which was lovely to sit and watch the boats come by. Very peaceful and quiet. Lots of room for children to play and the new addition of the activity frame was fab! Very secure location. Izzie has thought of everything with these pods - a proper home from home. We will definitely return again.

What a beautiful place to stay. The host came down to the introduce himself and he's so lovely to talk to. Families can actually relax, it's so peaceful. And plenty of space for the kids to play, with the added bonus of the playground. The people passing on the canal boats give you a little wave and those moored up are nice to talk to too. Everything you could need whilst there is included too. Fan, hoover, mop, hairdryer, tea, coffee & sugar etc. And plenty of board games and cards for the kids. They have literally thought of everything. Pods I've stayed at in the past have asked for extra money for kiln & firewood & disposable BBQs, but all this can be found in the little storage boxes on the porch. There is a local pub which is just a short walk through the beautiful countryside called The Boat Inn, if you don't fancy cooking I reccomend you go here for food. The food is so nice and again plenty of space for kids to play. The grounds of the pub is beautiful too. Lots of outdoor seating to watch the canal boats or you can sit at the back where there's a play area and fish ponds. I can honestly say I will 100% be coming back here. Thanks so much for a lovely stay.

From the host
Nelson's Wharf is a small unspoilt family owned holiday site with just three high specification glamping pods plus room for family camping as an accompaniment the pod booking. This is perfect for the family where the adults can enjoy the luxury of a pod along with two youngsters or the youngsters can enjoy safe, adjacent camping outside.
Nearby attractions
The campsite is ideally situated, in the centre of Warwickshire, to explore many of the historic midlands towns. Warwick is less than 25 minutes away by car and worth going to if only to visit the majestic Warwick Castle (01926 406610). It's a proper day out for the whole family with attractions and activities that include a birds of prey show, jousting competitions, and a maze. Just outside the grounds of the castle is The Mill Garden (01926 492877) which is a magical setting of winding paths that lead to dramatic views of the medieval fortress. Stratford-upon-Avon lies just 10 miles further south and is famous for being the home of Shakespeare. It's possible to visit the family house and garden of the bard by going to Shakespeare's Birthplace (01789 204016). For walkers and cyclists, there are a number of scenic trails on the doorstep of the campsite. The Millennium Way is a 100-mile trail made up of 44 individual circular walks one of which, the Lias and Stockton Locks Circular, passes Podtastic and includes no less than five pubs on its five-mile route. Part of this trail takes in Stockton Reservoir (01926 812249) just one and a half miles to the west, which has good carp fishing.
Food and drink

Pubs abound in this part of the world, there seems to be one around every corner. The Boat Restaurant and Bar (01926 812657) is the closest of these to the campsite, however. It's only a 10 minutes walk and is a good option for food as well as for a traditional pub atmosphere with local real ales, cider, and an open fireplace. Just 15 minutes further along the cycle path is The Blue Lias (01926 812249), named as such after the local clay type. It has extensive canal-side seating, good pub grub, and is supposedly haunted! For a variety of restaurants serving international cuisine, Royal Leamington Spa is under 20 minutes away by car. Kayal (01926 314 800) is a hugely popular Keralan restaurant that specialises in authentic and traditional seafood dishes from the southern Indian state and Las Iguanas (01926 968758) is a cocktail bar and Latin American/Mexican restaurant offering sizzling exotic dishes, with veggie and vegan options, at reasonable prices. For breakfasts, snacks, homemade gluten-free cakes, and coffee, The Larder (07702 559518) is a good bet.
