A shiny American Airstream may be the trailer of choice for erstwhile pop stars and famous country singers but, with festivals cancelled for 2020, there aren’t many on the road these days. It also means that festival accommodation providers, like couple Mojo and Kizzy, have had time to get imaginative with their fleet this summer. The result is The Wells Glamping, a collection of five luxury Airstreams dotted around two beautiful meadows in rural Herefordshire.
Opened for the first time this August, The Wells Glamping may be a new venture but it feels as if the place was always meant to be. The Airstreams, one on a hilltop with good views, another right beside a beautiful pond, a third, nearby, tucked away behind some trees, enjoy spectacularly green surrounds and there’s a picnic bench outside each. You can opt to add a firepit for the obligatory marshmallow toasting experience or, for something really special, there are also a couple of hot tubs available for hire. Inside, meanwhile, the trailers feature en-suite bathrooms, fully equipped kitchens and mod cons like USB-connected sound systems and digital TVs. As you’d expect of anything this shiny, it’s all pretty luxurious.
Every Airstream has been imported from the USA, so they’re very much the real deal. Two of the five – Hilltop and High View – have interiors arranged by a renowned San Francisco-based designer who specialises in Airstreams, and all feature classic, stripy Airstream awnings that you can pull out to create extra shade. On a summers evening, with the campfire going, it’s the very image of classic caravan living.
Around 30 miles from the Welsh border, the meadows are quiet and feel like a sleepy backwater but it’s little over a mile before you’re back on the A44, which zips you along to the outside world. Hampton Court Castle, Berrington Hall, the Malvern Hills and the National Trust’s Brockhampton Estate are all within a 20 minute drive, while Worcester, Hereford and Witley Court are only a little beyond that. Bring the car, then, and the world is your oyster. And, with accommodation like this, you'll certainly be glad you left the tent at home.
