Back-to-basics camping in rural Oxfordshire with big views

Since 2016 Lindsay and Alan have been running one of England’s most highly rated and exclusive campsites on the doorstep of the Cotswolds. Though the place is all about ‘proper’ camping – think campfire cooking and big views – it also has an air of luxury, with just nine camping pitches and a private ‘en-suite’ toilet beside each, so that you never need to walk far from tent to loo.

The land here, nestled just on the edge of the picturesque Thames Valley village of Littleworth, has been farmed by Lindsay’s folks for four generations and there’s a warm, beaming enthusiasm radiating from the whole family. It’s clear that both the farm and the campsite are a real labour of love. In recent years, the farm’s flock has diminished to just a handful of pet sheep, a small herd of dairy goats and some chickens but it still has a working feel. Peep from your tent at the right times and you can also spy less expected critters – hares, buzzards, red kites or deer.

Perhaps one of the finest features at Park Farm is the ever present and ever changing view, best enjoyed at dusk with a campfire going and the sun sinking in the distance. Each pitch boasts a spectacular vista stretching out from the Upper Thames Valley to the Cotswolds in the east.

You can’t enjoy such scenery without it eventually drawing you out, either on foot or in the car. Head towards the historic market town of Faringdon or the Thames-at-Radcot, both within a leisurely half-day stroll. Alternatively, take to your wheels and wind your way to Oxford for days spent drifting along in a punt.

5. Stumps
Peaceful camping on a farm!
I loved the individual sites with toilets, potable water, picnic bench, and fire pit. The camp hosts are hospitable and pragmatic. The site clearly says no cars allowed a certain point and they even offer labels wheelbarrows for each site. The group next to us decided to drive and the camp hosts were there immediately. But then disappeared back into the farm afterwords making it feel seclusive again.

Pitch with view and personal loo!
We loved the fact that there are spacious, individual pitches, each with their own personal toilet and that they are all surrounded on three sides by trees, which gives a certain degree of privacy. We enjoyed this so much more than camping in a field with tents on top of each other and having to negotiate these in order to get to the toilets/shower block.

We had an amazing time at The Real Campsite. The view was perfect and it was great having our own toilet. We will definitely be back.

Beautiful
Loved the camp, beautiful views, every thing is well though about, easy check in and out. Only downsides were late check in and early check out policy, also the stumps land slopes down towards tall bushes that restrict the beautiful views when you sit at the allocated campfire. I would still come back though!

1. Oak End
We brought two of our granddaughters for their first taste of camping and we all had a great time. Large flat pitch, amazing views, our own toilet en pitch (a luxury). The girls loved the animals and collecting eggs from the chickens. Bus stop a 10 minute walk away - buses to Oxford every 30 minutes. Highly recommended.

The Real Campsite at Park Farm is proper, real tents only camping, how it should be: a small site with large spacious pitches, stunning panoramic views, campfires, your own private toilet on your pitch and no cars on site making it safe for children (and adults!) to run around, play and explore. This is real camping but it isn't pitching your tent in a crowded field, 6inches from your neighbours, tripping over guy ropes on the midnight toilet trek. This is 'boutique' but it isn't a yurt or log cabin, with electricity, hot tub, and a glamourous price tag to match. Our nine individual designated pitches boast stunning views across our 380 acre working arable farm and on over the Thames Valley to the Cotswold hills in the distance. Relax, walk, build dens, spot wildlife – you might never want to leave the farm! But if you do there is lots to see and do: we are close to the Cotswolds, the dreaming spires of Oxford and we are just a few minutes drive from some of the best wild swimming spots on the Thames.
Nearby attractions

Viewing your surroundings is always a good way to start. Faringdon Folly Tower, a unique 100ft tower built by the eccentric Lord Berners in the 1930s, offers fantastic panoramas of the Thames Valley and, a mile or so further north, Radcot Bridge and Lock is a wonderful spot to stop for a picnic after. It's the oldest bridge across the Thames and was the scene of many battles, today, away from the lock itself, this area of the river is also particularly popular for wild swimming. To the south lies Uffington: home to the famous white horse; a hill figure carved into the chalk escarpment and thought to date back to 1000BC. For more farm fun, kids love Roves Farm (01793 763939) in nearby Sevenhampton, which has daily animal handling and feedings, as well as tractor rides and more. For something more exotic, spot rhinos, giraffes and zebras at Cotswold Wildlife Park (01993 823006), 25 minutes away. The dreamy spires of Oxford are also an easy 30-minute drive. Spend a day exploring its 38 colleges, pop into the various museums and visit the labyrinth of boutique shops in the covered market. And, if the weather's good, indulge in a spot of punting (01865 515978).

Food and drink

If you're venturing off-site, you don't need to stumble far – it's a 10 minute walk to The Snooty Mehmaan (01367 242260), a multi-award winning Indian restaurant, including 'Best Asian Restaurant in Oxfordshire'. For something more traditional, The Lamb at Buckland (01367 870484) – serving local brews and seasonal hearty pub fayre –  is a pleasant hour's stroll away (there's a bus that can drop you back). Faringdon town centre, meanwhile, is home to plenty of other eateries. A few doors down, the Faringdon Coffee House (01367 241574) has a handful of outdoor tables – grab a slice of cake and watch the world pass by. The Trout Inn (01367 870382) at Tadpole Bridge is a touch on the pricey side, but worth it for its location on the banks of the Thames with views across the Oxfordshire countryside.
