A family site in rural Girona, all set around a 15th century Catalan farmhouse

Let's see – a beautiful setting at the base of the Pyrenees, the perfect location for exploring stunning Catalonia. A bucolic paradise brimming with wildlife and divine countryside views. Interested? You should be.

Set around a 15th century Catalan farmhouse, Can Coromines is a friendly, family-run site in the heart of rural Girona. It’s a spacious place with many different areas to pitch your tent. Take your pick from a nice spot under the shade of a pine tree or upon the lush plane looking up to the imposing panorama of Mont Mare de Deú. Whatever you choose, you’re sure to enjoy this wonderful place. Your host Sara does an excellent job in creating a tranquil, relaxing environment.

Onsite activities are as plentiful as the local bike trials, so whether you fancy a dip in the pool, a beer on the terrace, or a game of table-tennis, Can Coromines has something to offer everyone.

For culture vultures, the charming city of Figueres (an 18km drive) never disappoints. Birthplace of surrealist art icon Salvador Dali, Figueres is home to the fabulous Dali Theatre and Museum. Housing over 4000 pieces of Dali’s work including paintings, drawings, sculptures, the museum is a must for all art lovers.

Many proud Catalans maintain their corner of the country is a little bit closer to heaven than “ordinary” Spain. And with its soaring peaks, glorious countryside and sleepy small towns, it’s hard to disagree.

Nearby attractions

The rural village of Maià de Montcal can be reached with a short stroll. Take the quaint country lane and visit the local shops, church, swimming pool or pick up a souvenir from the resident potter at his workshop. Catalonia’s largest natural lake, Estany de Banyoles is just a short drive away. A famous rowing location, (used in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics) it’s not uncommon to spot athletes and cyclists rolling around the charming lake front. According to legend, there once lived a giant monster who terrorised the locals and it's said the creature still lives in the depths today! If you visit Figueres, don't leave without dropping in to The Dali Theatre and Museum (0034 972 677 500) and the fun (if slightly creepy) Toy Museum (0034 972 504 585), both are well worth the trip.

Food and drink

The friendly welcome at Can Coromines is matched by the tasty homemade food. The Mediterranean menu is made from fresh local products, using herbs and vegetables from their own garden. Bread, croissant, milk and eggs are available to order every morning. There are dozens of quality restaurants in Figueres, suiting all types of budgets. Local Catalan specialties include fuet sausage, seafood paella, and gazpacho. Lizarran (0034 972 506 667) offers a terrific range of authentic tapas in a lively, friendly atmosphere. Try the polpo a la plancha (octopus to you and me), it’s a local favourite.
