The owners can lend you bikes, take you foraging or provide a guide to the local footpaths – there are several beaches (and pubs) within easy walking distance – or stay on site to explore the semi-wilderness of the valley.

Hugged by the verdant Cambrian Mountains, Oak Grove Retreats is a hugely popular spot for tents and caravans alike, sitting just 200 yards across a meadow from the River Wye. The touring field enjoys the best view of this gorgeous waterside scene, while the tent campers are given, not one, but three of their very own separate areas including a 'secret', semi-wild spot.
The Glamping Orchard Gloucestershire
Situated within a wide meander of the river Severn, The Glamping Orchard is a brand new site just a few miles upstream from the Bristol Channel. It's easily accessible from the M5 yet feels wonderfully rural, with just two fully furnished bell tents pitched among the apple trees. The ye olde agricultural charm of the place is summed up by the horse and cart rides, bobbling you along to the local pub.

Despite boasting 40 acres of protected nature reserve to explore, Denmark Farm has a self imposed limit of just 10 tent pitches, meaning space and greenery is always guaranteed. Nature trails are way-marked across the site and the farm's conservation centre runs regular courses such as birdspotting, conservation and woodcraft – so check if anything’s going on during your stay.

With just a single shepherd’s hut overlooking a tranquil, natural pond, The Shepherd’s Hide in Essex is the very definition of ‘seclusion’. Inside, it features a bathroom, king-sized bed and fitted kitchen area, while, beyond, the 55-acre farm is a natural collage of streams, marsh and meadows. Walk to the coast or, in summer, explore the Pick-Your-Own strawberry farm a few yards away.
Boasting not one but two separate locations – the first in Bere Regis, the second near Bridport – Glampotel is at the very forefront of the luxury camping world. Gorgeous bell tents on raised, wooden decking feature double beds, wood-burning stoves, and bespoke, handmade furniture and are all ensconced in their own private glade within a larger site. Outside the Dorset countryside unfolds with the Jurassic Coast a short drive away.

Just over an hour from London, this eclectic campsite on the Cambridgeshire fens boasts five tent pitches, a yurt, tipi and an authentic gypsy caravan, all nestled in an organic orchard. Its eco-friendly credentials haven’t hampered the facilities – there are showers, loos and an excellent outdoor kitchen – but do ensure the local wildlife population always outnumbers campers.

There are communal campfire evenings, gatherings for home-cooked stews and even an onsite bar, plus the basic facilities needed for an old-fashioned outdoor holiday.
