Château de Monfréville Calvados, Normandy

Ideal for family glampers, Château de Monfréville is actually a campsite but has a couple of excellent glamping options that sit within its quiet, small-scale field. A vintage tractor will chug you and your belongings across the car-free site to where a pair of gypsy caravans are tucked among the trees, furnished with a double bed, bunk-bed, table, chairs and cooking equipment. Set up by the well-established folks from Feather Down Farms, these plush yet rustic safari tents are kitted from roof to rug with country-chic wares, including bronze candelabras, heavy wooden tables and a toasty log-burning stove, while the layout is one of comfort and practicality. They reside on a sleepy French farm, run by affable owners who will happily give you a tour – the farm has been family owned for over 60 years. A wonderful site for kids it’s already built a great reputation in the UK, so be sure to book early.

La Pointe Saint Coulitz, Brittany

Tucked inland and enjoying the quieter site of Brittany, riverside Camping La Pointe is, first and foremost, a campsite but also has an excellent choice of glamping options. Their fully equipped canvas lodge tent has its own private area within the site and everything you could need; expect the full works of family beds, separate rooms, wooden furniture and kitchen facilities. But despite the luxury, you can still experience the joys of proper camping – muddy knees, grass stains and the space for children to run wild. The coast is a convenient half hour drive away and the Armorique Natural Park, a varied landscape of forest, fields and fauna, is also nearby.
