UK Wales South Wales The Gower

Pitton Cross Camping & Caravan Site, Pitton Cross, Rhossili, SA3 1PT

Shepherd's hut glamping with all mod cons, within strolling distance of Rhossili Bay

When twilight dwindles into darkness and the wind howls through the Welsh valleys, shepherds of previous centuries would retreat to the shelter of their rickety huts. A makeshift mattress stuffed with straw, a dusty sleeping bag and a lantern flickering in the doorway were the only comforts they could claim as they watched their flock huddling in the cold. To call the careful craftwork of Scamperholidays a shepherds' hut, then, is to mask the truth of what these modern-day hideouts really provide. Today a holidaying shepherd can wander to beautiful sandy beaches, cocoon themselves in nearby country pubs or simply kick back in their cosy abodes, reading a book whilst the smell of a barbeque wafts through the open window. There are no lambs under your responsibility and no feisty rams to shear, sheepdogs, however, are still more than welcome.

Set in a private paddock in the corner of Pitton Cross Campsite these luxury, glass-walled Scamperhuts offer stylish accommodation just a short walk from beautiful Mewslade Bay. Surrounded by a raised wooden deck and with ample room for parking, campers can enjoy space outside while inside all the comforts of home guarantee a comfortable stay. At one end of the hut there's a double and a single bed that fold against the wall to form a futon-style sofa, opposite the TV. Then, in the fitted kitchen (complete with a fridge and gas oven) you’ll find two large rectangular holes to climb through into a couple of single bed caves. Any sense of claustrophobia is avoided with light painted walls and slim windows that looks out onto the campsite, giving kids a quirky yet cosy place to sleep.

Beyond the Scamperhuts, guests have normal access to the rest of the campsite (Scampsite?) and can take advantage of Pitton Cross’s well-stocked shop and a sanitary block near the entrance. There's also a small lake on the edge of the site, just off the path that leads down to the beach. While having the sands on your doorstep makes this a pretty dreamy location, it’s well worth heading a little further afield and going a mile and half along the peninsula to stunning Rhossili. The spectacularly located village at the western end of Gower overlooks a bay where a stretch of white sand curves into the distance. Recently awarded the titles of 'Best beach in Britain', 'Third best beach in Europe' and 'Tenth best beach in the World' it’s certainly been recognised as the place to go, though fortunately, the space is vast enough to absorb the crowds.

Such high acclaim is perfectly justified for this dazzling stretch of the Welsh coastline and the panoramic views at Pitton Cross Campsite make it a prime place to lodge. The big glass doors of Scamperholiday’s shepherds' huts help bring the outside in, while the modern furnishings and everything-you-need finish make for somewhere to camp in style while exploring the natural wonders of Gower.
