Family-friendly safari lodges and a romantic couples retreat, all set in private areas of afarm, with wood-fired hot tubs and spectacular views

When Lydia and Richard first opened Under the Oak Glamping in 2018 they had just a single luxury safari tent, set beneath a beautiful old oak tree in a corner of their farm. Such was the popularity of the place, however, that within two years their collection had blossomed into three family-sized tents and a romantic two-person railway carriage, each ensconced away in its own private area. Of course, not all of these were under splendid oak trees. But a name is a name. And by now Under the Oak had earned quite the reputation, including being crowned one of the UK’s top five glamping escapes by ELLE magazine.

On the edge of the small village of Bedwas, near Caerphilly, Under the Oak is not a place that does things by halves. You’ll find plenty of creature comforts, such as a cosy Welsh box bed, well-stocked kitchen, and – oh thank you – a hot tub filled with natural spring water, heated by a wood-burning stove. Yet for all the luxuries, this is still a place that lets you really enjoy the great outdoors. Simply pack a few changes of clothes, some sturdy walking boots and a good book and you’re perfectly set to enjoy the farm.

Whether you’re in the safari tent beside the sparkling pond or the newly restored railway carriage under, yes, another oak tree, every option has views across the Rhymney Valley, stretching out to the rolling Welsh hills opposite. The outcome is a glamping experience that’s private, yet wonderfully open, with room to explore the local area in your own ‘holiday bubble’. Sheep and cattle are generally your nearest neighbours and, on occasion, buzzards and red kites soar overhead. With such an easy pace of life and an abundance of fresh air to soak up, it's surprising to think that Cardiff is just a 30-minute drive away.

Lydia and Richard look after the site, but it's been used as farmland for generations. There's a genuine sense of enthusiasm radiating from the family, and it's clear that Under the Oak is a labour of love. From little homely touches – fluffy towels, comfy cushions and a kitchen stocked with plenty of basics – guests don’t want for much. The living areas of each tent offer a spacious and comfortable place to unwind, whilst in the centre, a wood-burning stove throws out heat on chilly Welsh nights. Cynefin, the railway carriage, meanwhile, is a superb piece of design, with its en-suite shower room, kitchen area and sleeping space all neatly fitted in without feeling claustrophobic or cluttered in any way.

The mountain above the farm is a great way to explore the local surroundings, offering excellent walks and panoramic views across to the Bristol Channel. For a big climb head for the tallest peak in the Brecon Beacons, Pen y Fan (886m), shared only with a few other walkers, and, occasionally, soldiers training. Prefer the coast? Try Southerndown, which offers plenty of pebbles, sand, and rock pools. At high tide the beach disappears – as all do along this coastline – and a short walk inland reveals the remains of Dunraven Castle, one of the many classic Welsh castles waiting to be discovered.

The safari tents have everything you need. Each has a kitchen – gas hobs, fridge, sink with hot water on tap, plus plenty of basics (oil, salt, pepper and herbs) – and a living area with a table and chairs, sofa, candles, lanterns, books and games. There is electricity throughout each tent and a wood-burner with plenty of logs – if you do need more, head down to the log store and pile your wheelbarrow high, just pop £5 in the honesty box. Each tent sleeps four with a Welsh box bed, ideal for couples, and a double sofa bed, great for friends or a couple of kids (all bedding is provided). Safari tents are en suite –flushing toilet, basin, hot shower and fluffy towels. Well-sheltered veranda, table and chairs for outdoor dining. Fire pits provided, with a griddle and hot plate for barbecuing. Cynefin, the restored railway carriage, sleeps two and features all the same luxuries in a more compact setting and, of course, one less bed. Every glamping unit on the site has its own, private wooden hot tub, heated by a wood-burning stove, which once up to temperature, will stay hot for around an hour.

Suitable For

This is a glamping only site suitable for couples and families. Dogs are welcome in the safari tents, however the railway carriage Cynefin is not suitable for dogs.

Wales is known for its castles, and there are some right on your doorstep. If you only visit one make it Caerphilly Castle (029 2088 3143) – one of the greatest surviving medieval castles, covering 30 acres of islands, moats and ramparts. Cardiff Castle (029 2087 8100), the fairy tale folly Castle Coch (029 2081 0101) and Raglan Castle (01291 690228), with its angular towers and Tudor-styling are also top spots for history lovers. Once you’ve had enough of castles, try the great monastic ruins of Tintern Abbey (01291 689251), whose beauty has been captured over the centuries by William Wordsworth and JMW Turner. There are countless other places nearby to visit, like St Fagans – with 100 acres of parkland and 40 original buildings from various historical periods, Big Pit (0300 111 2333) where, guided by former pit workers, you can explore Wales' industrial past. Also, Blaenavon Ironworks (01495 792615) and the huffing and puffing Brecon Mountain Railway (01685 722988) are popular with visitors.

Food & Drink

Food hampers for breakfast or BBQ's are available to book in advance, and there's a small honesty shop next to the wood store where you can pick up essentials (free range farm eggs, local preserves, honey, pickles and chutneys). Guests can buy provisions from the local village, which is only a mile down the lane. Nearby places to eat include stylish gastropub The Old Cottage (029 2076 5961), no-nonsense British pub The Maenllwyd (029 2088 2372) and Italian bistro Volare (029 2132 2077). Not forgetting the countless restaurants in buzzing Cardiff.

Cynefin, the restored railway carriage, is open all year. The luxury safari tents are available from Easter to the end of October half term only.

Beautiful, Peaceful, Re-charge

I don't even know where to start! The beautiful views, snug homely glamping carriage, lovely owners. I booked 2 nights stay in one of the carriages for my husbands birthday and we was not disappointed. Tucked away with beautiful views, lovely little touch of a birthday banner :-) just all u need with a comfy bed, wood burner, fridge and little bathroom. Just perfect little getaway. Absolutely loved the wood burner hot tub too with little fairy lights to set the mood. I would love to come back again to recharge and relax! Thank you under the oak for the perfect hideaway break.

Top notch glamping - loved it!

Just returned from 2 nights in cynefin carriage for my partners birthday - his first glamping experience and we both absolutely loved it. The accommodation is beautiful, super cosy and very well equipped, impressed to have a bathroom inside, major plus! Loved the concept of an honesty shop on site and felt like we were completely secluded up on the hill (omg the views!!). The owners were brilliant, always on hand to help and made us feel very welcome. The hot tub was such a luxurious touch too and perfect to enjoy the surroundings day or night. We enjoyed getting to grips with how to build a good fire! I'd definitely visit again and have already been passing on details to friends and family. Very impressed!

Amazing place, lovely owners, can’t wait to come back!

Myself and my boyfriend stayed here over Bonfire night weekend and it was so lovely. It was really easy to from the M4 and even in the dark we could see the signs and found our way to Cartfef. Inside was even better than we were expecting; it was super cosy, decorated lovely and had everything we needed for the weekend. We lit the fire as soon as we got in and it warmed up the place really quickly and kept us toasty for the evening. The kitchen was a perfect size and was full with so many utensils and crockery. It all felt really clean and well kept. It was very easy and quick to get into caerphilly for main shops/supermarkets, however l there were other places nearby if you wanted to walk somewhere. It was lovely being on the hill as we could see so many fireworks from right inside our door. I would highly recommend this place to anyone that wants a perfect getaway! I would highly recommend this place

Wonderfully relaxing getaway

We stayed for two nights in Dan Y Ffawydden with out teenage daughter who we thought would be bored, but she absolutely loved it and so did we! From the amazing view, to the quirky tent, everything was just completely spot on. We wanted a peaceful getaway, to relax and enjoy spending time with other, and this was the perfect place to do it. My husband enjoyed looking after the fires, and chopping mountains of wood which we brought with us, much needed as there is the log burner, fire pit and hot tub burner to keep going. Our daughter enjoyed the coziness of the bedroom nook with its fairy lights, and I enjoyed sitting with a cuppa and a book on the veranda overlooking the beautiful Caerphilly mountains. The campsite is close enough to the town if you need to pop in for supplies, or explore the castle, but not too close, so you still feel like you’re getting away from it all. We can’t wait to go back.

We booked a weekend away at Under the Glamping.

We booked a weekend away at Under the Glamping. The tent and hot tub were fantastic. Lydia met us on arrival and explained everything, but the start info app/document was also a great support. So relaxing and beautiful views.

The perfect little getaway

My partner and I were looking for a last minute getaway in the UK and after searching online we found Under the Oak via Cool Camping. We stayed for 3 nights in Cartref and it was just pure heaven - going out exploring South Wales in the day and then coming back for a dip in the hot tub and some dinner by the fire in the evening. The hosts were lovely and helpful, we had everything we needed and it all felt very covid safe too. Thank you Under the Oak - we will be recommending to everyone we know and would love to stay again in the future.

Fantastic hidden gem

We had the best few days away here! Myself, my husband (and our 2 dogs) just wanted a few days away from everything to relax and this place did not disappoint! The safari tent was lovely, with everything you could possibly need. The setting was very picturesque - next to a lake and surrounded by fields with the only sounds being from the birds and cows! We went on walks every day, all from our base and the scenery was great. There is a lovely little pub at the bottom of the hill to the site (Church house inn) with a big beer garden and a marquee so we could take the dogs - great service in here! The co-op and butchers are only a few min drive from the site so plenty of places to grab food to cook on the outdoor fire pit. The walk back up the hill is a bit of a killer but if you like walking then this is a great place to stay! We would definitely recommend staying here and would love to come back one day!

What an amazing break away that was 😁

This was a brilliant break from start to finish! The safari tent was spacious and surprisingly cosy in the autumn weather. The hot tub was great fun to watch the stars from. You don’t even realise other people are on the site it is so well designed. The only negative was that we had to leave .. book longer than you think you want😁

Highly recommended!

We (my husband, our 6 month old baby and I) had a fantastic 2 night stay in a safari tent. The accommodation is clean, comfortable and super relaxing... we would have loved to stay longer! We were a bit concerned about having the baby with us but it was great! There is electricity, hot running water and the tent stays nice and warm.

Wonderful weekend away

We just spent 2 nights here and had a fantastic stay. The converted railway carriage was so lovely and comfortable, and had everything you need, the location was beautiful and quiet and the wood fired hot tub was a lovely treat. Would definitely recommend it. We did a lovely hike on the local area and would recommend the forest drive too.

Superb stay at beautiful location

I booked CYNEFIN one of the two refurbished railway carriages at Under The Oak for my partners 50th Birthday. Having just returned from our stay I would just like to say the following on our time there. The accommodation was excellent and completed to a high standard. The added bonus of the hot tub was just brilliant. I added in some of the packages available from the owners and they were just amazing. We certainly weren’t going to go hungry!!! The romance package was a total surprise for my partner and again just so beautiful. Set in a lovely location it was just so chilling and a perfect way to round of my partners birthday. Thank you Lydia & Richard for a wonderful stay. Would highly recommend to friends and family.

Fab little hideaway!

A perfect little hideaway to get away from the world for a few nights. The accommodation is clean and comfortable (especially the very comfy and cosy bed). All you need is available. The hot tub is superb to relax in and the firepit with grill over is great for a BBQ and to keep you warm after a dip. It's peaceful with a lovely view out over the landscape below which is great for the soul! We ventured to the pub (Church House Inn) at the bottom of the hill and enjoyed a lovely lunch, the food was great and the staff very friendly. The walk back up the hill was a lot harder than going down but the hot tub soothed the aching legs! Overall a great place to enjoy a few days relaxation. Thanks Under the Oak Glamping, we will definitely recommend you to our friends and family (actually, we already have) and will definitely be back in the future!

Beautiful Glamping and location

Amazing tents, Lydia and Richard have thought of everything. Stylish yet practical inside. Constant hot water and cosy when you get the wood burner on. Location is so pretty and beautiful views from our tent. We took the 6 man tent which worked well with 2 teenagers. Hot tub a big bonus too. Would highly recommend.

Perfect Birthday Weekend

Took my partner for a birthday treat and we had a wonderful stay in Cartef cabin. It was everything we wanted for a long hiking weekend in the Brecon Beacons, and the hot tub was perfect for relaxing in the evenings.

Amazing Glamping Holiday

We have just returned from a four night stay in the Dan Y Dderwen safari tent- what an amazing find this place is! The tent is spacious, well equipped and very clean. Our children loved the Welsh box bed with the twinkly lights and the beds were super comfy. The wood fired hot tub was wonderful, and Richard was very helpful when we struggled getting it going it one evening- it's very easy once you get the hang of it! We found there was plenty to do in the area, only a half hour drive to Cardiff and a little further to some nice beaches. We also had a great morning at Mountain View Ranch (20 mins away) which had a Gruffalo trail- a big hit with our children. Thank you Lydia and Richard for a wonderful stay, we will definitely be returning!

lovely secluded place in the south of wales, amazing views and so nice and quiet.

We booked the shepherds hut as our 'Mini Moon' for 4 nights. We loved our 5 days in Wales and had a great stay. The little cabin was set under a large tree up the hill which had amazing views! It was so quiet and secluded surrounded by beautiful fields and the open countryside. So peaceful it was lovely to be away from the hustle of city life. The cabin had everything we needed - a little kitchen fully equipped and a bathroom. Outside we had a wood burning hot tub which was situated under fairy lights. The camp fire was great for cooking food and we BBQ'd most nights. We loved our stay. Richard and Lydia were very warm and friendly and welcomed us warmly when we arrived. The pub at the bottom of the hill is great for food and drink and Caerphilly is a short bus ride from the centre of the village. . We couldn't recommend this place enough we enjoyed our mini moon a lot. Kind regards The Newlyweds.

Much more luxurious than I expected

We spent a great week here, as a family of 3 we had lots of space, lots of time to relax, enjoy the hot tub and explore the area. The kitchen was very well stocked and the beds were extra comfy. A great base for Bike Park Wales and Zipworld adventures. We would certainly like to return. A wonderful staycation luxury.

Beautiful tents in a beautiful setting

We spent a very wet and windy august weekend at under the Oak but had an absolutely brilliant time. Three families had three safari tents and despite the weather we had more fun than we’ve had all year! The tents themselves are absolutely perfect. So well laid out, clean, cosy and comfortable (this is our 4th safari tent holiday and these tents are the best so far). We spent most of a rainy Saturday afternoon in the hot tub and spent Sunday afternoon at Caerphilly castle. We spent evenings cooking and grilling together and enjoying the views from various tent balconies. Lydia and Richard were super responsive and helpful hosts. One final thing is that the log burners and logs were so easy to use (not always the case) and total novices were heating up cabins in no time 😆👍

Stunning little gem

What a wonderful find, under the oak glamping certainly lived up to its name . Lovely accommodation and picturesque views . Great base to explore the beautiful waterfalls , beaches and countryside. Would highly recommend this lovely place .

A wonderful week away

We have just returned from the most wonderful 5 days staying in Dan y dderwen. The tent is so well equipped it makes a holiday so luxurious - firelighters, matches, the comfiest cosiest duvets! The outside space is just perfect - we had so much fun playing cricket, football and just enjoying the sun. It’s a perfect base for exploring

We had an amazing time at under the oak this weekend. We stayed in cartref and it was perfect. Lovely and cosy for the two of us, exactly what I was looking for. The hot tub was the highlight of the weekend with wonderful views and the peacefulness of the countryside. It was very private as all lodges are spaced apart well. 100% would recommend staying here. Couldn’t have been better.

Superb place to relax!

My partner and I have been to Under the Oak Glamping twice now, and are trying to book a third visit in the next month or two. The surroundings are peaceful, hardly any noise other than for birds, cows and the odd tractor in the fields above the site. The safari tents are spacious and fully equipped so you do not miss the simple luxuries of hot and cold running water and a huge bathroom. Richard and Lydia can't do enough for you before or during your stay; Lydia is actually keeping me updated on the duck family we adopted during our last visit - we are desperate to know the ducklings have flown with momma duck! I can't recommend the site highly enough, you will not be disappointed at all!!

Wonderful spot up in the hills away from busy life. We stayed for four nights in Cartref - beautifully restored railway carriage with decking, hot tub and fire pit. Had everything you need for a comfortable stay (loved the little extras e.g. the welsh cakes and cooking oil), great to have the fire pit (sausage sizzle with family) and not really aware of the other accomodation as all so well spaced out. Only tip I'd give is to check the temperature of the hot tub water before adding more logs....we didnt and almost boiled ourselves!! Would definitely recommend staying here. Thank you so much to Lydia and Richard.

Had an absolutely fabulous weekend glamping at Under the Oak. The safari tent was clean and comfy, had a lovely shower and the hot tub was the cherry on top. Would recommend to anyone who wants to get away from the hussle and bustle of normal life.

We will be back soon

Beautiful peaceful place, lovely owners, spotless, comfy beds and such a pretty place with its own hot tub. Loved the ducks. I would recommend it to anyone

Perfect getaway

After a year long working and not much time off in between, My partner and myself wanted to book a hot tub cabin in the middle of know where to zone out from the world. We found it... This lovely cosy hot tub wagon was ideal and satisfied every request. The quite, the views, plus the hosts are very welcoming. We didn’t leave the wagon for two days ( Not even for a stroll )! Just what was needed. I have recommended and will definitely return.

Beautiful place!

Had a lovely weekend away in one of the gorgeous, quirky huts. Spotlessly clean, with everything you needed for a couple of days away. Beds were amazingly comfy! Brilliantly located, with lots of local walks nearby, but also only half an hour away from Cardiff, as well as other places of interest! Hot tub was lovely, and even used the firepit for a lovely BBQ! Will definitely be returning! Thank you!

It's perfectly located to see across the countryside and see the sea. Place is clean and the hampers which I paid extra for are lovely. Fabulous, relaxing space

We arrived for a relaxing weekend stay and that’s exactly what we had. The tents are spacious, spotlessly clean and have everything you need. The location is peaceful and private. The hot tub was great fun. There was plenty of space in front and around the tent and beautiful walks from the campsite. Highly recommended and we will return.

Brilliant getaway

Been here twice now. First time we came 2 years ago, surprise for my birthday and it was amazing what they had done to help celebrate my birthday, we also had our 2 dogs with us, plenty of room for them and space to run around. Second time we stayed in the railway carriage, weekend just gone and that was just as good as the first time, my partner done it as a treat for us. Very cozy, plenty of room for just us, and the outside looked beautiful, nice BBQ which cooked the food very nicely and of course the hot tub which was very nice to settle in after a nice walk to the viewpoint and back. It's exactly the place you want to visit to relax, and actually open your eyes, see the scenery and realise how beautiful the place is.

We had a very relaxing 3 nights stay in one of the two converted carriages. The ambiance, privacy and the views were stunning. Richard and Lydia were very friendly and accommodating.

The railway carriage afforded us adequate space. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, went on numerous walks and drove around the local village and into Caerphilly. The staff at the local, The Church se Inn were very friendly. Possible suggestions would be to include an umbrella or some sort of covering for the outside seating area. Some form of ventilation for the carriage as during the day it tended to be hot especially during the day. It must be stressed that we made the best of the outdoors and being with nature. It was a very special experience and look forward to returning in the future. Best of luck for your endeavours.

Absolutely perfect±

My partner and I came to under the oak for my birthday and stayed for 2 nights, although I wish we could have stayed for longer as it was very hard to leave! The accommodation was perfect - it had everything we needed, it was incredibly cosy, the views were amazing and of course the hot tub was an incredibly lovely bonus! It was such a peaceful, secluded and serene place to stay and we just had the most wonderful time. We will definitely be back!

A 3 Night Stay - June 2021

We came to wales to see family, and we have a little puppy so needed dog friendly accommodation. I came across under the oak online. We thought it looked absolutely stunning. So we booked. This was our first glamping experience. When we arrived the sun was shining (yes, even in wales!) and we’re greeted by Lydia. She showed us to our tent, and gave us a tutorial on the wood burners. And we settled in well. Sadly this site isn’t suitable for poor mobility/overweight guests (like me!) as it’s on the mountain, so obviously there is an incline to get from your car to the tent. And if you have a small automatic car, good luck getting to your car parking space 🤣. The Welsh box bed is only really suitable for kids. We struggled to even get up into it. Luckily there was the day bed that pulled out into a double. There is a dining table that seats six, a two ring gas burner, a kettle to boil on the stove, a small drinks fridge, wood burner, two double beds and a fully functioning bathroom. Sadly the shower wasn’t very clean, and the trinkets in the kitchenette were greasy and sticky. But everything else was lovely. There’s tea and coffee sachets, and a local treat on arrival which is a really nice touch. Sadly we aren’t glampers, but under the oak is a lovely place, and the views are incredible, so don’t let our Un-glamping-ness put you off.

Brilliant glamping experience

Had a lovely stay with Under the Oak glamping, was a joyous experience, we stayed in the renovated railway carriage on cynyfin. Decorated beautifully and was very cosy and clean. The welcome we had was exceptional and they were very friendly and was there to help us take our luggage to and from on arrival and departure. Also they were very accommodating and helped us heat the hot tubs up when we struggled. The welcome package was excellent with quality goods and treats for us to enjoy. The cards and the othello game provided us with some entertainment and was a nice escape from technology. We had stunning weather which made the views more beautiful. I would definitely recommend staying and enjoying what Caerphilly offers.

Wonderful bank holiday stay

We had a lovely, relaxing stay at Under the Oak over the May bank holiday. We got very lucky with the weather, the setting is gorgeous. We loved sitting by the fire and watching the ducks on the pond. The hot tub was fantastic and seeing all the bats coming out at dusk, and then the stars appearing whilst sitting in the hot water was incredible. The tent was much bigger than it seemed on the photos and really well-equipped. The shower was nice and hot with good pressure and the bed was comfy and cosy. The only thing we wished for was a couple of deck chairs or loungers outside so we could sit in the sun in comfort!

Lovely relaxing weekend

Had an amazing time with my hubby and 2 kids in toe, the kids especially loved the tree house bed and hot tub and we loved the added bonus of a power shower. Tranquil setting overlooking a duck pond and a morning moo from the cows, oh and not forgetting the superb sunsets ….. will definitely be recommending to family and friends

Great for a relaxing break

Lovely place to visit, sit in the wood fired hot tub and take in the surroundings. Excellent set up, nature with a touch of glamour. Great to get away after the Covid lockdowns. I haven’t got a bad word to say about the place, accommodation or hosts. We hope to return sometime soon.

Lovely 2 night stay for my birthday

Everything you could need for a glamping trip. The safari tent included all the essentials we could need, the decor was so lovely and the location is absolutely beautiful. The communication with lynda and Richard was very good and they were on hand for anything we needed. Would highly recommend!

A stunning getaway

A perfect place to go for the first time glamping with our little one. Plenty of space for her to run around and adventure, and everything you'd need in the tent. A great location - wonderfully secluded but yet so close to so many things to do. We will be back :)

Absolutely stunning location, wonderful hosts!

This was our first time visiting Wales and definitely won’t be the last! The converted railway carriage was so gorgeous, with the stunning views from the hot tub and not to mention the attention to detail inside and out. Lydia made us feel very welcome and gave lots of tips of where to visit nearby. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking for a peaceful relaxing weekend, plus there are so many activities to do such as the Brecon Beacons and beaches. Amazing few days, cannot wait to go back!

Perfect in every sense of the word

So what can I say about this magical, beautiful, stunning little getaway. Lydia and Richard are amazing, very friendly and inviting. The accommodation was absolutely beautiful only beaten by the stunning views around you as you sit, relax and feel the stress run from your body. The bed was really comfy, the kitchen fully equipped and a cozy little en-suite. I cannot praise this place enough, the only way for you to find out how wonderful it is, is to experience it for yourself. Get booking and get glamping.

Absolutely Stunning Location on a Family Run Farm in the Welsh Mountains 🏞

It was are first time glamping last weekend and already we can’t wait to go back. Firstly, we can’t believe that this is actually on our doorstep. We really don’t appreciate what’s around us . . . Well, until now 🥰 Lydia & Richard are the most wonderful hostesses, nothing was too much trouble. So friendly & welcoming, they made us feel at home. Booking was made so easy. We stayed in Cynefin Railway Carriage . . . It’s the most beautiful little home. The decor has been done to a very high standard. The little en suite was perfect, the bed was so comfy, best nights sleep in a long time. And the wood burner was a great touch, so cosy in the evenings. We loved the wood fire hot tub, glad Richard showed us how to do it because we didn’t have a clue lol. It so nice to get away & actually relax for for a few days. We had a bbq every day & went on a few mountain walks. We had the most wonderful stay and can’t wait to come back with our family & friends soon. We would highly recommend Under The Oak Glamping. . . Wonderful Stay with Wonderful Hostess on a Family Run Farm in the Welsh Mountains. Which means beautiful views when you wake up every morning 🏞#theperfectgetaway #thebesthostess #beautifulviews #familyrunfarm #logburner #woodfirehottub 🥰

Beautiful escape to the countryside

We booked the wagon and when we arrived Richard had the woodburner going which was fabulous as it was already dark even though it was late afternoon December. The decor is simple but beautiful, all the mod cons and a lovely view from the top of the hill. This is a fabulous place to escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. All the equipment is there to make fab food and in the morning as the snow fell and the bacon sizzled we fired up the hot tub. It takes a couple of hours and plenty of wood so don't be stingy with it as you are worth it! Peppered with walks, reading, Backgammon, cooking and friendlies, a day in a hot tub with great views across the valley was the perfect birthday treat: the morning snow flurry, the midday sunshine, the early evening blue/pink sunset and then the stars appearing was an absolute joy. So close to home in Cardiff, I felt like we were a million miles away. With no one overlooking as you are on the top of the hill we felt such freedom. It was simply the best.

Wonderful yet again

This is our second visit to Under the Oak and yet again it didn’t disappoint. We stayed in the converted carriage again because we loved it so much last time. This time the bath had been swopped for a log fire hot tub which was just wonderful, stepping outside into the hot tub for a glass of wine before dinner was just perfect. The weather was horrendous while we were there but there is definitely something magical about sitting inside all warm and cosy, log burner blazing while the wind and rain howl outside....needless to say we will definitely be returning as soon as we can

Fantastic glamping experience

We have just returned from a weekend here where we were able to relax and enjoy the wonderful scenery and go for walks straight from the tent. we loved having the hot tub and were lucky enough to see a firework display in the distance one night when we were in the hot tub.

Relaxing, private and great views!

We stayed in the converted carriage following a recommendation from friends. What an absolute gem of a place! The outside bath was a huge hit, nothing more relaxing than a soak in the tub watching the sunset. The place is so relaxing and peaceful, we will definitely be back.

Lovely spot and great accomodation

We glamped at Under The Oak during lockdown: 5 of us and the dog in the Safari tent. The tent was lovely: very clean and nicely decorated. The owners were very helpful and friendly. The hot tub was great. Tip: if you are going in the Autumn budget extra for wood: we went through quite a few bags for the fire and hot tub. We had our own private spot with a great view. Would highly recommend.

5 Stars an absolute gem

Wow what a wonderful place. Not being able to leave Caerphilly due to the lockdown, we came across this hidden gem and OMG we loved it. Stayed in the converted railway carriage Cynefin. It’s sooo cute. Everything you need for a cosy stay. We weren’t too sure about the outside bath but we tried it and absolutely loved it. Being sat in the bath looking out at the spectacular views with a glass of wine was just wonderful. Would highly recommend. In fact, we loved it so much we came straight home and booked in again for a few weeks time. Lydia and Richard were very helpful & friendly and the breakfast and bbq hampers were perfect. Can’t wait to be back

Peaceful place in beautiful location

We booked to stay during local lockdown and we enjoyed the family time together. The children enjoyed the hot tub at night watching the stars and marshmallows on the fire. The mud kitchen & sand pit we’re a big hit for the children! Thank you both for wonderful stay

Glorious views, luxurious camping

What an absolutely idyllic spot with incredible views. Lovely owners. High quality and robust Safari tent, fire pit, wood fired hot tub and facilities. I highly recommend. And I only live 10 minutes drive away!!!

Private,relaxing, hot tub,great views.

A friendly welcome upon arrival,a gentle walk to the Safari Tent ( due to Covid) where our luggage awaited us. The tent was well equipped, even USB ports on the sockets for the mobile generation. Both the tent and hot tub burners are easy to light ( all wood/kindling supplied). The tub is ready in an hour..ish. Sat in and enjoyed the great scenery. Lots of local walks with plenty of history, there’s Caerphilly Castle a mile away. Am recommending to friends and will return. 5stars

Couldn't fault it, perfect place to stay

We had a fabulous few days at Under The Oak Glamping this summer, with our two children aged 6 and 8. The accommodation was brilliant, and everything had been thought of. From a mud kitchen and sand pit to keep the kids amused, to candles, a fire pit and fairy lights around the hot tub. It was simply beautiful to watch the swallows over the pond at sunset, (glass of wine in hand). What an incredible spot with such amazing views. The setting with the oak was just stunning. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone visiting the area. With only three safari tents and a hut, it was very quiet and private, especially compared to a camp site. We are converts to safari tents, so much space!

Absolutely stunning!

We have just returned from a long weekend stay at the under the oak camping and it was nothing short of amazing! The set up, facilities, the views are amazing and the owners have done an incredible job. We are already looking into rebooking!

Highly Recommend

Beautiful setting, lovely helpful hosts and great accommodation. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Can't recommend enough

This place is beautiful. We had the train carriage. I wanted somewhere I could barbecue with a view and go for good walks. It was exactly that. The view from our spot was really good. The cabin is really nice, with a cosy and comfy bed. A beautiful walk with incredible views stats directly out of the front door, and only takes ten or so minutes to get to the great views. It's also really convenient for people like us, who can't drive.

Peaceful glamping

We had a wondering time here, set on a lovely farm up a hill you have all the peace and quiet you need. The three of us had all the space and amenities we needed for a short stay. The chance to heat the hot tub, fire pit and the fire in the tent. It was a great experience to share with our 2 year old. The local butchers and superstores were close by, we went to Cardiff for dinner one evening which is not far. We walked around Caerphilly castle one afternoon, only a shame the weather was not on our side. To be honest we didn't need to venture out, having quality family time playing Peppa Pig playing cards and drinking wine was just perfect for us. We would definitely come back again!

One of the best camping trips we’ve had

We’ve just arrived home after a fantastic week staying at Under the Oak, we were welcomed by Lydia and Richard and given a friendly overview of how everything works. We took two teenagers and our Dog who were all over the moon with the site. We stayed in the large 6 person Safari tent which had ample room, a huge area for the dog to run around and us to set up outdoor games. The hot tub was delightful after a days exploring to relax with a glass of wine. The tent had all the comforts of home, a super comfy four poster bed with fairy lights. Fresh sheets and towels and all the amenities you’d need for a great holiday. We cooked meals inside the tent and on the BBQ/fire pit with ease. Evenings were spent playing card games and toasting marshmallows over the fire pit, a beautiful location well thought out for all your needs for a fun family camping trip. Each day we enjoyed different activities all in relatively close proximity to the camp (30/40 minutes by car but many closer options too) gorge scrambling with Adventure Wales shout out to Alex!, horse riding with Ogmore Farm a beautiful beach ride and trek through the dunes, paddle boarding on the RiverTaff - we took our own boards and used the slipway of Channel view centre for a small fee (But they also hire out boards and canoes if needed). We were so fortunate with the weather having 4 day’s of sun but even on rainy days we chilled in the tent with a movie, stoking up the fire and eating on the veranda (4G reception is fine up there- Useful for teenagers). A fantastic week, Under the Oak will not disappoint. Thank you Lydia and Richard - L & A

Perfect romantic getaway!

We had a wonderful few days at Under the Oak staying in Cynefin. Watching bats in the evening sky from the outdoor bath was the perfect way to celebrate my birthday. This is the perfect spot for a romantic getaway. Lydia and Richard were very welcoming. We can’t wait to come back and stay in one of the safari tents soon!

Lovely Break

Stayed at under the oak for a little 2 night break in July as our wedding got Corona'd! Was quite last minute as most places were booked. It didn't disappoint, the tent are clean and very cosy. My children (3&4) love the cabin bed. The bonus to these tents are that you have a bathroom, which is great especially with little ones, shower was really good too! We had ordered a BBQ pack which was lovely, and cooked it on the fire pit. Hot tub was fun, and lush once you get it going. We had a lovely area to ourselves where the children could play, added bonus was the mud kitchen and sand pit! Located on top of the mountain which gave amazing views! We had a lovely break and would recommend.

Little corner of Heaven

We LOVED our stay at Under the Oak Glamping. It was so peaceful, very relaxing and Lydia/Richard were brilliant hosts. They were very accommodating and welcoming. Cynefin was stunning with gorgeous views and we had so much privacy. The outdoor bath tub was fabulous and we loved our outdoor fire ring/bbq. We purchased the BBQ hamper and breakfast hamper, both delicious and good value. We only stayed for 2 nights but were able to venture to Caerphilly Mountain, Castle and take a short drive to Barry Island/ Jackson Bay. It was perfect coming back and unwinding in our little corner of heaven. In the evening especially peaceful and the views were honestly breathtaking. We will be back in the future, it was just perfect for us! Highly recommend for anyone wanting to unwind and relax. It was lovely that during the current situation we had our own privacy and were able to keep safe but have the freedom of the countryside! Thank you Lydia/ Richard!

Amazing and cosy

I love the our oak Glamping’ it’s was very cute and cosy. It has everything you need and the view from the place was breath taking. It was a wonderful stay for sure we will come again when we get a chance.

Brilliant! A very special place.

Just back from four wonderful nights with my three boys and we all had the most amazing time. Beautiful views and scenery. Really comfortable accommodation. Everything was so good! So much to do nearby... Pen y fan.... four falls walk... biking.... quad biking and archery. Can’t recommend highly enough - we will definitely be back - thank you to Richard and Lydia who are lovely hosts too.

Under the oak, above the worries

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in the Cynefin wagon-turned-cabin at Under The Oak. The site was very private but had an amazing view. I took full advantage of nightly fires to grill up goodies from the butcher in Bedwas, and the wood burner in the cabin kept the space nice and toasty as well. Lydia and Richard were friendly at check-in and left me equipped for solitude the rest of the time. I'm looking forward to my next books-and-campfires retreat at Under The Oak.

My family and I (inc 2 dogs) have just returned from a very stress free 4 night stay at Under the Oak. We were fortunate enough to secure the 6 berth tent. I cannot speak high enough of it to be honest! The views were stunning, the grounds around the tent were exceptionally private and spacious which was perfect for our four legged friends. The hot tub was fun which even had drink holders in it.....perfect for that evening drink watching the sun go down. The bedrooms were great especially the cupboard bed which my 16yr old daughter bagged, it was finished off with fairy lights around it which made it even cosier. The log burner was lovely just to take the edge off the chillier evenings. I though the honesty box for logs/kindling was a good idea as you didn’t need to bother the owners at all. This was our 1st time glamping and certainly not our last! If you have dogs, this really is the place to visit for a few days! Very good communication from booking it to our farewell. I wish Richard and Lydia all the very best with this venture. We loved the place!!

Happy Wife, happy Dog = happy me

We had a short stay away at this lovely venue at the end of September. Despite the weather which at times was like a tornado we had a wonderful stay. Dog friendly, log burning fire and views of the welsh country side, what more could you ask for. Fabulous place, and will be back in the future

Weekend glamping

Had a lovely weekend glamping in the safari tent. Views were amazing and tents provided everything needed. Would definitely visit again.

Will Visit Again

My wife and I are already thinking about our next visit after a lovely 2 night stay. The tent had everything we needed and the wood burner kept us nice and warm even though the rain was pouring outside. When the weather dried up we even managed a whole afternoon in the hot tub. And what a view!

Cozy and Relaxing Weekend

We arrived around 5pm on the Friday and were greeted by the lovely friendly owners who transported all of our things to our glamping tent for the weekend (the car park is a little way away from your tent so wellies or walking boots would be ideal to arrive in). The tent was clean, cozy and had all of the amenities we’d need to be comfortable for our stay. We paid for additional hampers which were full of fresh produce, the bacon in particular was delicious! The views were stunning and the wildlife sounds really added to the experience (cows in the next field and ducks in the pond in front of the tent). The wind really picked up on the second night which meant the canvas was blowing quite loudly, but again this added to the ‘glamping’ experience. We brought our 8 month old with us and found there was plenty of space for all of her things. A travel cot and high chair can be provided if you ask in advance which is handy. One thing to note if you are traveling with a young child is that the adult bed box is high up and the kids will sleep at ground level. The area has a couple of local pubs and then Caerphilly is only a 20 or so minute drive away where you can pick up things you need. There are plenty of supermarkets nearby which was useful. If I could give 100 stars I would!

We recently spent a long weekend at Under the Oak in the 6-man tent - two parents and grown-up children. What a weekend - it really did surpass all expectations and was perfect in every way! Richard & Lydia were lovely hosts, welcoming us on arrival and driving all our luggage to the tent entrance. The site itself was wonderful and every little thing had been thought of. Beautiful views, totally secluded camp area, private hot tub and every comfort we could have wanted - cosy log burning fire, blankets, hot water bottles and twinkling fairy lights. The box-bed was the cosiest I have ever slept in and I'm wondering how I can recreate something similar at home! There is lots to do on the doorstep (we enjoyed country walks and a trip to the beach at Southerndown), but we were equally as happy staying at the tent, cooking on the fire pit and playing the board games provided. A truly perfect weekend - spending quality family time in a glorious setting. Thank you to our hosts and we can't wait to come back!!

Secluded retreat

The service was exceptional, from taking all of our luggage to and from the cars and just generally being on hand for any queries. We hired all 3 tents but still lots of privacy if you were just hiring 1 tent with its own bit of grassland. The site was beautiful, clean and well equipped. Will definitely be returning in the future!

Perfect glamping set up to experience wonderful Wales . Although the weather wasn’t brilliant, it was fabulous to return wet from our castle and mountain adventures to hot showers, cosy log burner, supper cooked on the fire pit and steaming hot tub! The boys loved being kept busy collecting more logs from the well stocked log store. We even managed to see Saturn when a break in the cloud allowed us a chance to use our telescope. Fabulous memories made! Our boys loved the Welsh box bed with cosy fairy lights, to avoid fights one night each! Caerphilly castle was amazing even in the rain. The views from the summit of Pen Y Fan were a delight to see . We all thoroughly enjoyed St Fagans national museum of history. We had a lovely meal at The Black Cock Inn and recommend the local village butcher who had a huge selection of treats for the fire pit.

A birthday treat

My partner booked this for my birthday getaway, on arrival we were greeted by Lydia who was extremely friendly and helpful, helping us load our stuff into the 4x4 ready for her to take us up to the safari tents. We did not know what to expect in regards to the tents but upon arrival they surpassed both of our expectations. A “happy birthday” sign hanging out front was a lovely surprise and on entering a bottle of bubbly/balloons and chocolates were an even bigger surprise. The cabin bed, is something totally different which we both loved! The tent comes prepped with plenty of wood/fire starters and kindling but if you need to purchase more, the supplies are just a short walk away. We had a small bit of trouble keeping the hot tub fire a light but after a small phone call with Lydia, Richard was up at our tent and showing/helping us with the hot tub fire, which stayed burning all day! We are already booking for a return trip with family next year! We cannot thank Lydia and Richard enough for our lovely, relaxing trip! 5* Thank you!

Spent two nights at under the oak with my two kids aged 5 and 2. My 5 year old loved the box bed light with fairy lights and I was jealous I didn’t get to sleep in there! Tent was well equipped and the hot tub and mud kitchen both very popular. Shame the weather wasn’t a little better but the log burner kept us toasty and warm. Would love to return.

We absolutely loved our stay at under the oak Glamping. We stayed in the newest six person tent. The views were spectacular. The tent is situated on its own so very private and only a short walk from the main farmhouse. The hot tub was fab. The tent is very well equipped and the three bedrooms all very comfortable. My children were fighting to stay in the cupboard bed! The bathroom is very nice. Lydia and Richard were so welcoming and very helpful when teaching us how to heat the hot tub. There had been a calf born whilst we were there and Richard kindly let us see her. There is lots to see and do in the area. We went out to the Gower peninsular one day. Up to the Brecon beacons on another, and to Big Pit on a rainy morning. I would certainly recommend this to all types of groups, we will certainly be returning! 10/10

Amazing weekend in a beautiful location

We were two couples and a dog enjoying a weekend away. This place has beautiful views, nestled in the hillsides if Bedwas. Richard was super helpful and very friendly. So were the neighbors who gave us some delicious plums from their garden. On the first morning we woke up with a cow grazing right outside our window which delighted us all. Although the weather was terrible it almost made the whole experience. It was very cosy sitting inside with the fire lit, playing games and listening to music. We also had a hot tub both nights which was lovely. The "tent" (it's actually more like a cabin) was beautiful and had everything we needed and more! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone and we hope to be back soon! Thank you for a great weekend!

Fabulously cosy

We stayed in Dan y Ffawydden which had plenty of space for the five of us (two adults and three teens). The hot tub was fabulous, and the fire pit gave a barbecue with the best view. The weather was changeable, and watching the sky alter from the tub or the verandah was mesmeric, but the tent was wonderfully snug and well equipped when the weather was less kind. Thoroughly recommended, with attentive hosts on hand when needed but left us to enjoy the peace and space the rest of the time. 5*

Simply fantastic !!

Fantastic tent with everything you need for a relaxing break. Lovely bedding on all the beds, great bathroom with loads of hot water and a really nice shower. Kitchen indoors and bbq over the fire pit outside for al fresco meals. The hot tub fitted all of us in and was really hot after an hour with the logs burning. We stayed in the larger tent with loads of outside space and a great view over the valley across to the Bristol Channel. Great beach at Southern Down with rock pools, cliff top walks, ruins and a walled garden to explore, and Caerphilly castle just down the road. Friendly and helpful hosts and free range eggs too...... yum !

Fantastic outdoor experience !!

We stayed in Dan y Ffawydden for a four day weekend break with my daughter and the grandchildren, immaculatef tent with an amazing bathroom, full facilities and great hot water. The view over the valley as far as the Bristol Channel was awesome, loads of outdoor space for the kids, hot tub big enough for all of us, and a fire pit to barbecue over. Really peaceful with just the cows for company, it gave us a chance to really unwind. Recommend the beach at Southern down, not to far to drive, and loads of great sand, rock pools and the walk along the cliff tops is lovely. The hosts were really helpful and free range eggs too, yum !!

Very nice place!!

If you're looking for quietness and rest, than this is the place to be! Beautiful scenery with lots of private space! The tent had all we needed, including a very good shower!! The woodburning stove did miracles during a rainy day. Very friendly hosts! And the hottub just is very pleasant extra experience!

We booked Under the Oak Glamping for our daughter’s 21st birthday. The setting is magnificent with views into the valley and across the estuary. The site accommodates 14 people and with our daughter’s guests visiting from all around the country we booked the whole site. Only 20 minutes drive from Newport station it was easy to get everyone there. The accommodation was excellent and very homely with all mod cons. Outside there was plenty of space with hot tubs and barbecues. The guests had a great time. Richard and Lydia are excellent hosts and I would thoroughly recommend the experience to anyone. It is just one of those things that you are glad you did!

Amazing experience definately to be repeated

This was our first time glamping and what a fantastic time we had! Facilities were spotless and luxurious, the cabin bed was a definite hit as was the fantastic shower. We loved having the pond outside the front of our tent and the young ducklings provided unexpected entertainment. We managed to get the hot tub heated and enjoyed watching the sun go down from it and cooked our evening meal in the fire pit. Very relaxing environment and thoroughly enjoyed our stay, will definitely come back

It was the first time Glamping for us and all we can say is WOW and can't wait to come back. We are a family of 3 (2a and 1c who is 15) and it suited us all. The tent was immaculate with a fantastic shower (which is the main thing for me). The hot tub was just such fun with amazing views (perfect for my son) and the BBQ was a perfect setting by the lake with the wood store nearby to stoke up (perfect for my husband). So we all highly recommend and can't wait to experience the place again xx

Wonderful place for a large group!

Recently went to Under the Oak with a group of 13 people. It was great - the height of luxury camping! Flushing loos and hot showers right inside the tents, with hobs and hot water for washing up. Note that if you are planning on going with a big group and want to cook a big meal, you will either need to split up the cooking between tents or bring all 3 (quite heavy) cast iron BBQs together. We combined our strength and managed just fine but just FYI! The hot tubs were amazing, with cup holders built in and plenty of dry area surrounding to put a bluetooth speaker and enjoy the breathtaking views with some good tunes. All in all I can't recommend this place highly enough!

What a beautiful location. We traveled from Western Australia, to visit family in Cornwall and to experience 'Under the Oak Glamping.' Definitely worth the visit. Lovely luxurious stay

The safari tent that we stayed in has everything we needed, and more. When we arrived the fridge had a little bottle of milk and a pack of Welsh cakes which was a lovely touch. The bedrooms were already made up with lovely thick duvets, and the beds had beautiful fairy lights around the top. The wood burning stove did not disappoint especially when the weather was a bit grim. I loved the finishing touches of the tents, with cosy blankets to drape over legs whilst chilling and reading. The hot tubs were amazing and the views were incredible especially as it turned to dusk. Luckily the rain stopped just enough to cook on the fire pit outside, a lovely piece of kit that my hubby is wanting of his own. Unfortunately we didn't have time to explore the immediate area, but plan to do so in July when we return. Lots of space outside and the tents are nicely spaced out so it feels like you are the only ones there. Very nice break, would definitely recommend. Was originally thinking of going traditional camping but I am so glad I found this place as it took all the stress out of organising a break away. Thank you Richard and Lydia

outstanding glamping experience

Great welcome from Richard & Lydia. Outstanding location with superb views and yet good access to surrounding area. Wonderfully equipped safari tents with everything you could possibly need! This is top end glamping make no mistake. Wood fired hot tubs and BBQ facilities with plenty of space on a real working farm. Absolutely delightful for all ages. Well done Richard & Lydia!

Under the Oak is a lovely isolated spot, perfect for a romantic weekend escape

The cabin, although covered by a canvas, feels worlds away from a camping experience. With a log fire for heat and hot running water it is easy to forget that you're not in a holiday cottage. The hot tub was easy to use and made for a perfect setting to observe the stars on a clear night.

Peaceful and beautiful, the location was amazing

We absolutely loved our stay at Under the Oak, from Lydia’s greeting with a welcome hamper, to the amazing location and safari tent with everything you could need for a brilliant holiday. The tent had such amazing views, was just the right mix of home comforts and an outdoorsy feel and the hot tub added a fun experience being outdoors in the pitch black! It’s also a great location to visit some of the amazing places Wales has to offer including the Brecon Beacons, Southerndown Beach and Ystradfellte waterfalls. We couldn’t have asked for more and have already recommended Under the Oak to all of our friends.
