Snowdonia's vast ranges and peaks have long enraptured the lofty faculties of poets, artists and naturalists. Indeed, even the humble hiker trundling rosy-cheeked back down her reclining slopes have been known to come over all Wordsworthian. Thankfully, we know the perfect place to indulge such newly-awoken meditative whims.
Nestled on the Webber family's smallholding, overlooking the idyllic village of Eglwysbach, Backtrack Camping is a wonderfully laid-back glampsite available for exclusive hire. The two bell tents, lovingly christened 'Hendre' and 'Hafod' (that's 'Summer Dwelling' to all you Saeson) sleep four a piece. The twin pitches occupy a sheltered but slightly elevated position with views across farmland, woods and hills. With a cast-iron fire bowl, communal kitchen area and pristine washing facilities, this is luxury camping with a big 'C'.
Affable hostess, Helen, really pulls out all the stops to ensure a hassle-free luxury glamping experience for her visitors. Beds will be made prior to your arrival, homemade jam & scones or Welsh cakes will be ready for you on the table, the fire will be lit if you wish and complementary marshmallows will be waiting, ready to toast. An initial supply of firewood and camping gas is supplied. If more is required it can be purchased on site.
Nearby centres like Betws-y-Coed and Conwy are the perfect places to eat, shop and soak up the local culture. Further north, the seaside resort of Llandudno has buckets-full of red-brick Edwardian charm, plus Wales' longest pier and a passenger cable car that enjoys unparalleled views over Anglesey and Puffin Island.
Back on the farm, the surrounding countryside is brimming with sights and activities to entertain and astound. The intrepid among you can try a spot of gorge walking or one of the many guided walks around Snowdonia.
Afterwards, relax in your palatial abode or round the communal fire with a steaming bowl of cawl while you contemplate, like Wordsworth, the mountainscape's 'grandeur and desolation', to the accompaniment of the occasional bleating sheep – your sole neighbours in this private hillside hideaway.
FacilitiesTwo 5 metre canvas bell tents occupy the small field (each sleeping a maximum of 4). Both tents now have 1 double and 2 single futons with all bed linen supplied as standard. Heated shower room with a hand basin and w.c. (unlimited hot water at no extra cost); covered kitchen and dining area. Campfires permitted in the designated area – Dutch oven, kettle and BBQ provided. Wood-fired pizza oven in a covered area where guests can prepare & bake their own pizzas, etc.
Glamping families, couples – yes. Caravans, extra tents, dogs – no.
Situated in the Conwy Valley means you’re within easy reach of both the mountains of Snowdonia and the North Wales coastal town of Conwy and its magnificent castle. The National Trust’s Bodnant Gardens is less than 2 miles away. A range of activities are on offer including mountain biking, wool-spinning, riding, fishing and gorge walking – contact Backtrack for details. The village of Eglwysbach is a half mile walk from the smallholding and has a shop and a pub.
Food & Drink
The onsite Field Kitchen is fully equipped for all your cooking and dining needs. Guests can also cook around the fire site. The Welsh Food Centre (01492 651100) is less than 2 miles away. It boasts an excellent restaurant, open lunch times & evenings. Bodnant Gardens has a highly recommended café. Conwy is famous for it’s seafood, especially it’s mussels and has many fine eating establishments. Plenty of country pubs in the area serving locally sourced food.

The Best Kind of Camping
Amazing experience! Not to be missed!
The perfect, tranquil stay
One week isn't long enough
Great place..whatever the weather
Just returned from 3 days with 4 kids in tow from this little gem of a camp-site. Everyday was great, despite the best attempts of the British weather to spoil the fun. Helen and Keith were incredibly friendly and welcoming, with chocolate cake and hot drinks ready when we arrived. Facilities were top-notch, and the on-site shower was a god-send for my girls. views were awesome, only 30 mins to Snowdon or the beach. we will be back.
Just returned to Norfolk from a superb 5 night stay at BackTrack camping. Wonderful place to spend a few days relaxing in your 'own' field with everything you need. Pizza Oven, open fire with logs supplied, field kitchen with all utensils etc, private shower/toilet for sole use. Helen was a superb host, always available if you needed anything or wanted advise on places to visit or where to walk. Thanks for a lovely experience. M & M
Just returned from the site and can honestly say that there are just not enough nice words that we can put together to express how very good the whole experience was!!! We were a group of 7 and had the whole site to ourselves ... the facilities and tents were just perfect; clean, inviting and well stocked with everything we could want.
Helen and Keith are absolutely amazing, they look after you and really take an interest in you as a person. They went out of their way to make us feel at home.
would definitely stay here again .... and again!
Thank you very very much for a great holiday

As soon I arrived I knew this short break was going to be a fantastic experience. The scenery was beautiful, all the grounds where we were staying were immaculate and Helen the owner who greeted us was lovely. I had sent Helen a few emails before arriving and she seemed very welcoming and met our every need. When myself and 2 friends arrived Helen greeted us with a pot of tea and fresh scones :)
We stayed in one tipi but had the whole grounds to our self, which was fantastic, toilets and shower so clean, all the added extras everywhere made it a true glamping experience.
I would not change one thing about Backtrack camping and can not wait to return with family and other friends. Sitting relaxing with beautiful scenary, fantastic camp fire and cosy tipis, the best camping experience I've ever had :)
Thanks again Helen,
Hope to see you soon,
Hollie :) x
I booked a long weekend stay as a wedding gift for my friends who love the great outdoors. I am so glad I did as it was a truly special experience. Helen and Keith were warm and welcoming hosts and made us feel at home....in the great outdoors.
We had a 2yr old and a 5yr old who loved every minute of the holiday. It felt safe and we loved having the chickens and sheep so close. We camp a lot and what we had was truly unique. It's quite rare these days to have your own camp fire. The added bonus was the pizza oven , and the kitchen is well stocked with good quality utensils.
The tents were fantastic. Clean and cosy . And to have a campsite all to yourself was wonderful. We will return for sure!!! Stay here and you will not be disappointed....I promise!

Glamping with a personal touch
This site is really wonderful, the privacy of having a field to yourself with a lovely summer kitchen and your own shower and toilet really feels like a bit of camping luxury. The tents are lovely, really spacious and comfortable, we were really warm and snug each night. We loved having a campfire each evening, Helen and Keith provided fresh logs each day. We had a fab walk with Helen around the local area, adults and children alike loved it. Helen and Keith are really lovely hosts and couldn't have been more welcoming or friendly, we must also mention Owen the sheep who stole all our hearts with his cheeky personality! Can't wait to go back.
What a great night we spent with Hélen and her family.
First, the teepee was very well equipped with super comfortable and super spacious beds and super warm duvets ...
Then we had a great summer kitchen with a large table, a gas stove and storage space.
We could also do an evening fire with wood provided.
We had access to a personal bathroom through a beautifully landscaped path.
Finally, the view of the valley is very pretty.
Furthermore, its positioning is very interesting due to its proximity with LLandudno and Snowdon.
Despite my English very rough (possibly misinterpreted), we were incredibly well received by the whole family.
We had a very nice evening by the fire sipping glasses of wine.
We would have spent an extra night but our steps were already defined.
We therefore highly recommend Backtrack and recommend bringing a bottle of wine that Hélen loves it!
It was really cool Glamping!
Marilyn's Camping treat.
What a delightful break away! Wonderful location with excellent scenery and so close to Snowdon. Such a nice way to enjoy camping/glamping and the owners were lovely on arrival. We are highly experienced campers and we alway appreciate the thought that has gone into the area and facilities. There is a great communal kitchen and a toilet/shower which is kept to an impeccable standard. The atmosphere is so relaxing calm – we could feel ourselves unwind in no time at all. I would highly recommend this sight to anyone and will be happy to spread the word to our friends and family. Thank you very much for an all round great experience! Thanks – Marilyn & Sophie.
Wow! We stayed at Backtrack in July this year 2013 and had the most wonderful experience.
Helen, Keith and Sam are the nicest people you could meet to run this beautiful hidden gem in the Welsh hills. Such a warm welcome, yet not in the least intrusive. The campsite is beautiful: Surrounded by trees, rolling patchwork hills and lots of fresh air and privacy. You have the campsite all to yourself so it's utter peace and quiet except for the lovely birds who are delightful. The tents and facilities are immaculate. and fully stocked for all you need. Even fresh scones and jam were there for us on our arrival. We loved the outdoor style kitchen which kept us all chatting and laughing into the night.
The evenings are enchanting with fairy lights, solar lights and candles; and better yet, a fantastic campfire to sit around and toast the lovely complimentary marshmallows.
The best camping site we've ever been to and we've been to a lot all over the UK and abroad! We're coming back for sure.
Thanks Helen, Keith and Sam.
Just got home from paradise! Backtrack was well worth a long drive – the views are immense. Fantastic hosts-from the first email to saying goodbye, Helen & Keith are relaxed and massively welcoming without being intrusive. The belltent was fab & facilities really good – kitchen & campfire, everything really clean and in your own private field. We are more campers than b&b'ers but if you fancy a stepup from damp backbreaking canvas without the lack of privacy this is the place for you. Heartily recommend – best night's sleep for a long time! Hopefully we will be back soon. :)
From arrival to departure everything about this campsite is excellent. The warm welcome from Helen, Keith & Sam plus the excellent scones start you off in the right way. The stresses and trials of working life melt away as you take in the scenery - stunning!
The facilities are excellent and in keeping with an outdoor lifestyle but with some home comforts thrown in. As someone who tends to bring everything including the kitchen sink when I go camping (just in case) it was great to find such a well-equipped site.
This is definitely a spot I will return to...
Great views and easy access to all that North Wales has to offer. Great welcome from the owners. A fabulous way to enjoy camping. As reluctant campers we found that Backtrack Camping was the best way to experience camping in relative comfort as you have at your disposal a sheltered area for your kitchen and a toilet/shower that you'd find in a B&B.
Our children were made to feel special and thoroughly enjoyed their stay.
As soon as we arrived we felt the stresses of modern day life just ebb away.
THANKS Helen, Keith and Sam. We will see you again.
A real hidden gem!
As a family of 3 we stayed at Backtrack Camping in early October last year, and have been telling all of this little gem since. Finally it's on Cool Camping!
Despite being closer to Winter than the Summer, we found this site wonderful and a real treat. The tent we had was fantastic and well furnished - a much more glamorous approach to outdoor living, and when you add in the lovely shower room it really was too easy to fall in love with the place.
Helen & Keith (& Sam) were wonderful and considerate hosts, who were there when we needed them, but equally left us to have a private, and I mean private, holiday. This campsite gave us everything we needed, despite being in wonderfully rural surroundings.
We took Helen up on some of the many activities on offer, and our little daughter absolutely loved spinning wool. The walking/hiking was great fun and all activities were reasonably priced.
Eating and cooking was made easy with the use of the wonderfully constructed covered kitchen/dining - with the most wonderful views to sit and eat with.
Even at the risk of letting out the secret of this wonderful site, I would really recommend Backtrack Camping - we will be back!
