Named one of the best Hipcamps to visit in 2023.
Hillside glamping in the Conwy Valley, in stylish glamping barns or a pair of luxury shepherd's huts with a wood-burning sauna.

If the stresses and strains of modern living have all got a bit too much, look no further than the wonderful bucolic boltholes offered by Snowdonia Glamping Holidays. Tucked up in the hills above one of the Conwy Valley's loveliest spots, a pair of shepherd's huts and a pair of glamping barns offer the fanciest of camping experiences; the ideal panacea for world-weary urbanites who are in need of a digital detox but still appreciate a little luxury.

As regular campers to these parts can testify, the pitch-up parade is often at the mercy of the frequently boisterous Welsh elements. But inclement weather is of no such concern here, thanks to solid roofs and wood-burning stoves that transform both huts and barns into cocoons of cosiness should the elements require it.

The pair of shepherd’s huts are rented together, one for living, the other for washing, both painted in soothing shades of eggshell and tastefully decorated with the finest local woolens. They are equipped with everything you could need for a hassle-free holiday. Oh, and the wash hut even comes with its very own wood-burning sauna! Positioned above a bubbling stream — great for paddling, dam building and a post-sauna dip for the adventurous — the huts are half a mile from the road, along a farm track.

Nearby, the two glamping barns offer yet more solid walls. Inside, each of these stylish spaces is cleverly divided to sleep and seat a family of up to four. It’s modern with a luxurious bathroom but has been left blissfully technology-free. There’s a kettle and a toaster but no WiFi and no TV. And if you’re wondering if this qualifies as glamping, just take a step outside. The kitchen is all outdoors (though handily undercover) and a fire pit is provided.

Whichever accommodation you choose, amiable hosts, Richard, Hazel and their children are about the only people who will ever pass by (except for the occasional walker) as even the postie doesn’t venture here. You might see and hear some wildlife, though — herons, hares and owls are all residents here and red kites are often seen whirling overhead.

Surrounded by beautiful countryside, there is superb walking and mountain biking all around. As the Conwy Valley tourist board boasts, Betws-y-Coed is 'the gateway to Snowdonia'. Although this enviable location within the national park nurtures an almost inescapable lure to all things outdoorsy, there is also a refreshing abundance of cultural and historical things to see and do. With fairytale castles to explore and seaside, Llandudno, just up the road, you won't go wanting for fun days out. Then, suitably shattered from exploring the best the area has to offer, you can retire in peace at this wonderfully secluded, hillside retreat.

Owl glamping barn
Perfect place to relax!
We loved staying with Hazel and Richard in their haven on the hillside. There were great views and the barn was perfect for the four of us. Lots of well thought out extras that made our trip amazing. They were so helpful, informative and friendly. I'd recommend this hide away to anyone that wants a great place to stay whilst they explore north Wales.

Snowdonia Shepherds' Huts
Off the grid glamping!
We had a fantastic 4 nights in these wonderful shepherds huts. It really is getting off the grid but with some real comforts - great outdoor cooking, hot private showers and toilet and a very comfy bed. Hazel and Richard were very accommodating. Would definitely recommend to friends, in fact we already have!

Owl glamping barn
In the “middle of nowhere” this is the perfect place to enjoy the beautiful views Snowdonia has to offer! Switch off from the busy world we live in (without tv or Wi-Fi) and enjoy the silence and the beauty of nature whilst toasting marshmallows on the outside open fire. That’s what we did! We have 2 little rascals (aged 5 and 7) and they have truly enjoyed themselves. The hosts are so helpful and welcoming, their customers service goes beyond expectations. The owl barn where we stayed has all you need, the biggest and most comfortable bed you can think of, bunk beds for the kids (which they loved), a bath and a shower (better than in some hotels we’ve stayed at in the past) a kitchen area where you can bbq or cook a simple meal and underfloor heating throughout to warm your feet up after a long cold walk. The track to the barn is indeed more suitable for a 4x4 than a standard car but we took our Tesla and managed just fine driving slowly (they even have an plug on the outside of the barn so we could charge up if needed). There is plenty of walks around if you enjoy hiking like we do. Lovely cafes nearby and plenty of activities for the children at the Zip World Forest which is only a 10 min drive away. It was all fantastic and a truly amazing adventure! We made memories forever to remember. Highly recommended!

From the host
We're very lucky to have found our home in this beautiful little valley just above the thriving village of Betws-y-Coed nearly 20 years ago. And we really love sharing it with our guests too. It's incredibly peaceful here. My favourite thing to do, even on the busiest of days, is to make a coffee and take just 10 minutes to sit in the garden and enjoy the sounds of birdsong and baa-ing - the soundtrack to our days, especially in Spring. There are some lovely walks from the door for all levels with incredible views of the mountains of Snowdonia - we're happy to point you in the right direction. Wildlife and birds are abundant too - red kites are often seen in the skies above the huts and, sitting out in the evening, you'll hear owls hooting to each other, and see bats flying silently past. We have resident hedgehogs and hares, and foxes and badgers sometimes pay a visit too. The road verges and hedgerows burst into life in May with abundant wildflowers, the buzz of insects and the activity of nesting birds. Further afield the water in the rivers and lakes of Snowdonia begins to warm up too and lazy sunny days can be spent paddle boarding, swimming or skimming stones. We'll gladly let you into the secret of the best local swimming spots! Or what better than cooling your feet off with a paddle after a long walk in the hills? We've tried to create a place for our guests to retreat to, a chance to reset, free from the demands of daily life - it's a deliberately tech-free environment, but with all the comfort and luxury to make your stay here as restful as it can be. The huts are cosy and romantic, sleeping just two in a double bed, although there's the option to add a fully-equipped bell tent if you really want to bring the kids along! And outside - outdoor kitchens that are fun to cook in and with views to rival the best kitchen window in the world, bean bags to flop into after a day exercising those legs, and of course, a firepit to toast your fingers and toes, or a marshmallow or two! We look forward to welcoming you to Snowdonia Glamping Holidays soon.
Nearby attractions

With Snowdonia National Park's forests, lakes & mountains on your doorstep, there's plenty of walking, cycling & wild swimming to be done - Hazel & Richard are happy to recommend the best spots and routes. This is also proper mountain biking country, so head down to the Machno or Marin Trail for fun on two wheels.  Almost on the doorstep, Go Below Underground Adventures (01690 710108) is one of the area's most challenging attractions - mine exploration with an edge!  You can also bullet down the longest zip wire in Europe and the fastest in the world at speeds of 100mph at  Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (01248 601444) or try one of the other adrenaline-fuelled adventures at their other 2 sites nearby!  Another cool place making waves in the region is the inland surf lagoon Adventure Parc Snowdonia (01492 353123) – the first of its kind in the world! No trip to the region would be complete without a visit to that most famous of photo ops, the Cantilever Stone. Conwy Castle is just 17 miles from the site and boasts spectacular views over the Conwy Estuary, with the dramatic mountains of Snowdonia as its backdrop. The outdoorsy village of Betws-y-Coed and historic market town of Llanrwst have plenty of places to eat, drink and historic sites to visit. For stunning broad empty beaches head west to Harlech or a little further down the Llyn Peninsula for hidden coves and top surfing.

Food and drink

This part of the world is bursting with fantastic local produce and Hazel is happy to direct you to the local shops including great butchers selling Welsh mountain lamb and black beef. For great traditional Welsh fayre in a welcoming pub setting,  the Ty Gwyn Inn (01690 710383) in Betws-y-Coed is a popular local restaurant. Or for something a bit different try the Welsh tapas bar Olif (01690 733942).  You could also sample one of our two great pizzerias and help settle a long-running local dispute about which is the best Caban y Pair or palm-oil free Hangin’ pizzeria, the sister restaurant of the brilliant Alpine Cafe in Betws-y-Coed serving a wide range of lunches, teas and cakes.  Stop off at Cadwalader's for a tasty ice cream cone on a sunny day or a pile of waffles if you've worked up an appetite in the hills.  Llanrwst is home to the award-winning Asha Balti curry house,  Tir A Mor fish and chip shop  and the most-photographed tea rooms in Britain Ty Hwnt i'r Bont.
