Handcrafted huts on a working farm, 10 minutes from the coast and 30 minutes from Snowdonia National Park

From little acorns, mighty oaks grow. This is particularly so at Rheon and Lucy’s mystical site. A beautiful, century-old oak, with its gnarled, hollow base, is at the heart of the Roberts family farm and, beneath its watchful eye, Rheon has been hard at work, handcrafting two unique, artisan 'Cwts' (huts) using local larch and red cedar. You can spend a long time marvelling at his craftsmanship while sitting on your hut's private deck, G&T in hand. Add a few herbs growing nearby to your drink – Lucy encourages guests to pick them – then sit back and enjoy listening to the thrushes' song or the woodpecker's familiar drum as you take in views of distant Snowdonia.

Lucy and Rheon don’t do things by halves. The huts are bright and airy and have everything you could possible need, with homely interiors that feature fitted beds, plenty of storage and a modern kitchen area where a welcome hamper containing items like the farm's own eggs. Cwt Iâr has a double bed, while larger Cwt Chwaden has a king-sized bed as well as a separate room with a set of bunks for children. At their core, these huts are seriously comfortable places to stay, with en-suite bathrooms, smart TVs and WiFi, but it's the little details that really make them stand out. Spot considered features like the tall tabletop made from one single tree-trunk cutting or the beautiful, individually styled coat hooks on the wall.

With a herd of prize-winning Charolais cattle, hens, ducks and sheep as your neighbours, you may be awoken in the morning by a soothing symphony of farmyard sounds. Venture out and it's a truly pastoral setting. Sheep graze on the slope immediately behind the huts and there's a babbling brook just a hop, skip and jump from your door. Follow the stream along the edge of the farm and dip your toes into the water’s edge to cool off – the perfect end to a long day if you've been hiking in The Snowdonia National Park (14 miles away) or stomping around on the Great Orme above Llandudno (10 miles).

The good thing about the farm setting is that it really provides something for everyone. You can muck in and try feeding the lambs with Lucy or start chatting cycling with Rheon, who knows all the scenic trails in the area and can offer tips for good local climbs and hill walks too. Yet, equally, if you want to sit back and enjoy a campfire beside the stream or some quiet time with a book in the cosy confines of your Cwt, there's room for that too. And, when you leave, you can always try and slip a fallen acorn into your pocket to take home. A complimentary momento that might grow into a tree you can build your own cabin under in years to come.

The Owner Says

Hollow Oak Glamping is within a working family farm which includes a herd of pedigree Charolais cattle and an assortment of sheep, hens and ducks. Rheon grew up on the farm and now lives here with his family (Lucy and three teenage children).  The Grade II listed 16th century Welsh farmhouse, Brynffanigl Uchaf, stands out in the local landscape because of its tall, white chimneys.

Our two Cwts (huts) are nestled below the farm under the gaze of a centuries old Oak tree. The Tree has a large hollow bottom which has been the focus of many childhood games including how many people can fit in the hole, which is rather a lot!  Hence the name Hollow Oak Glamping to reflect the history of the farm and its connection to nature.  We believe the Oak tree could tell some fascinating tales! The farm has links to a medieval Welsh Lord, Ednefyd Fychan, known as the ‘Lord of Brynffanigl’ whose descendants began the Tudor royal dynasty.

Our two Cwts were hand-crafted by Rheon using local larch and red cedar. Each one has been built individually focusing on luxury, comfort and to create a sense of well-being and awareness of surroundings. Each have under-floor heating, double-glazing with glass fronted doors, fully-equipped kitchens with induction hobs, snug beds, cosy seating areas, ensuite bathrooms with showers and private decking with seating and electric BBQs.

We are located in a perfect rural setting with beautiful, life-affirming countryside on our doorstep with the beach a few miles away.  As a family of keen cyclists, runners and outdoor enthusiasts we are spoilt for choice!

Beautiful cabin!

The most beautiful and cosy cabin and the perfect place to stay for our little holiday to North Wales! The cabin itself was so clean and had absolutely everything you needed, including an amazing shower and a little fridge and oven. Every single detail was thought of to make it so comfortable and cosy. The outside area was lovely too and the perfect place to have a bbq or watch the sunset. Amazing location the perfect place to stay when exploring Snowdonia and nearby towns. Will definitely be back!

Quiet, relaxing gem.

Well kitted out and beautifully designed secluded accommodation set in stunning scenery. Lucy and Rheon were welcoming hosts from the start. Chatted to Rheon about biking in the area. I was only sorry I didn't take up his kind offer to cycle with him to the finish of the final stage of the Tour of Britain. Would seriously think about staying again even though I tend to try new places each time. I recommend Llyn Brenig lake/reservoir for both walking and cycling. Great fun!

Add to that warmest of hosts and the beautiful setting, and you get a holiday experience to remember for a lifetime.

So relaxing, will definitely be back

We stayed in the hen hut for a long weekend and can say this is the best Glamping place we have ever stayed. The hut was spotless and very well designed the site was so peaceful you could hear a pin drop. The views are great and you are within a short distance of numerous places to visit being only 10 minutes from Abergele. Sitting by the fire pit roasting marshmallows while the sun goes down is something not to be missed. Rheon and Lucy are great hosts and gave us a fascinating tour of the farm. Will be booking again very soon

Amazing place!

We loved our stay at Hollow Oak and we would happily recommend it to anyone. The Cwt was perfect, and had everything we needed. It was spotlessly clean and super comfy. The location is brilliant, very quiet with stunning views. There was plenty of space for the kids to run around too. Plenty of beaches were within an easy drive and the area itself is lovely. It's located about ten minutes from Abergele, and we had day trips to Porth Eirias (great beach!), Conwy (great castle!) and Greenwood theme park, which the kids loved. You could easily reach Snowdon or Anglesey for a visit too. The hosts were really friendly and the personal touches they provided - plus the farm tour (and of course, the lovely dogs Maggie and Mali) - really made the stay extra special. We definitely can't wait to return!

perfect escape

We stayed in the "chicken" cabin - it was so well-designed and had everything we could possibly need. Everything was of high quality and the welcome basket was full of tasty treats. The deck was a lovely place to watch sunrise and sunset and it was so peaceful and relaxing. This is a great spot to explore Snowdonia and the coast and I really couldn't recommend it highly enough. Will definitely be back.

A lovely family break

We stayed at the “duck cabin” and were amazed by the facilities offered. From Welsh tea, to home made cake and eggs from the farm in the goody bag were enjoyed by all. Our kids loved toasting marshmallows on the outside fire pit while enjoying the calming sound of the stream and want to come back! The attention to detail in the cabins is well thought of and it was a very relaxing stay. The area is just what we wanted from having a relaxing breakfast or BBQ on the decking at the cabin while enjoying the amazing views to visiting beautiful nearby towns like the harbour town, Conway to climbing Snowden. Our hosts Lucy and Rheon were very welcoming. We will be coming back!

Perfect break, what a gem

Hollow Oak is a gem of a find. It's set in a beautiful part of Wales. Homely, stylish and super welcoming. This finish of everything and the special touches are second to none. Nothing is forgotten to make your stay perfect. We were even left a bag of marshmallows to toast over the fire, the homemade fruit cake was delicious too. The hosts were very friendly, insisting on giving our little girl a tour around their working farm before we left. The dogs are adorable and constantly visited our little Cwt for cuddles and strokes. Lots to do within 30 minutes and plenty of information about the local attractions in the welcome folder. A lovely, lovely stay and would highly recommend.

A little piece of heaven.

This is the most beautiful place, with Lucy and Rheon, the hosts giving the warmest welcome. The huts are an art work in themselves and this is really luxury glamping. Everything was spotless and nothing was forgotten. It was so peaceful you could hear the bees buzzing and the stream bubbling. You are in the middle of countryside but very accessible to the sea and the mountains. There is something for all the family in the area, zoo, petting farms, museums, trains and castles and lots of beauty spots to walk. You will not regret booking here, though I didn't want to write this, as I want to make sure I can get booked to go back without it being full!

Simply Amazing

We had a really lovely weekend stay at Cwt Chawden. The cabin is absolutely beautiful and cozy, equipped with high quality facilities. The surrounding of the cabin is very peaceful and serene, just what you need for a gateaway from life's daily chaos. Lucy and Rheon had also kindly left us with a cute little food basket which was very thoughtful. To top it all of, we were greeted by 2 friendly dogs (Maggie and Mali) who were just the sweetest! Highly recommend and will definitely be back!

Outstanding hospitality and amazing farm experience for kids

Honestly one of the best places we've ever stayed as a family the guys were stunning, the views were gorgeous and Lucy and Rheon were two of the most amazing hosts, who made the experience so special for us from involving the kids with farm activities and always on hand for great recommendations on things to do locally. There was so much on site for our 3 and 6 year old including egg collection, lamb feeding a little stream to paddle in and some super friendly dogs to play with. After 5 days they were both so much more comfortable around animals and did not want to leave. Thanks again Lucy and Rheon for such a memorable stay and we will definitely be back!
