Cosy shepherd's huts in the Brecon Beacons National Park with wonderful valley views, hospitable hosts and excellent footpaths on the doorstep

Megan the dog is often the first to greet you when you arrive at this Brecon Beacons glamping site. She’s not exactly the vision of a traditional sheepdog – a friendly and fluffy little Bichon Frise, she’d more likely get lost among white sheep then be found herding them – but she’s a key member of the Davis clan and roams the 330-acre organic valley with them just as family dogs have done for centuries. Today the farm approaches its fourth generation and, along with the old constants – a beef herd and the flock of Welsh sheep – there are some modern twists here, too. Not least the latest addition to the land; a trio of beautiful shepherd’s huts perfect for glamping in the hills.

Set in a meadow just beyond a couple of beautiful stone farm lodges and barns, the huts offer a beautiful and tasteful place to stay among the Brecon Beacons landscape. From outside they are a picture of tradition; great iron wheels sit beneath wonderful wooden walls and the curvature of the corrugated wood. Yet, within, the three abodes are each a thoroughly modern affair. There is under-floor heating, a plush en suite bathroom with a powerful shower and a fully equipped kitchen area with its own fridge and oven. There’s room for three adults (or two adults and two kids) in the fitted double beds, while, from the deck outside, the views are dazzling: Before you, the meadow drops gently away towards the River Crai, flowing quietly through the trees, while beyond the valley side climbs away into a long, green ridge, divided up by hedges and mature trees.

If you’re a keen walker then the national park location offers ample hiking opportunities, while mountain bikers will find the farm pleasingly equipped with a hose for washing down your gear at the end of the day. Those seeking a more casual pace, meanwhile, can explore the national show caves at Day y Ogof, six miles away. Learn your stalactites from your stalagmites and marvel at the spectacular shapes and formations that the River Llynfell has hollowed here beneath the ground. When darkness falls, though, you can enjoy one of the areas best attractions of the farm. Onnenfawr Glamping sits in the heart of the Brecon Beacons International Dark Sky Reserve, with some of the most dazzling stars to be seen anywhere in the UK. Light the log-burner, cosy up in your hut and enjoy the spectacle. It’s like an extra glamping gift from nature.

Each hut has a double bed; en suite bathroom with shower, wash basin and toilet; a small fitted kitchen with Belfast sink, hob and oven, fridge, toaster and a dresser unit for storage; dining table with seating for 2 and stools for extra guests.  There is a wood burning stove and underfloor heating. Each hut has a private hot tub, an outside porch area for outdoor clothing and boots. An outside tap is also available to wash equipment or bikes. Large decking area at the front of the shepherds huts with outdoor dining table and rocking chair. Running at the bottom of the meadow is the River Crai, tributary to the Usk, where you can fish for trout or hop across the stepping stones and explore a secret island (good for picnics). . Mountain bikes available for hire (£25 per day; £15 per ½-day)

Suitable For

Glamping only. 1 dog permitted per booking (£30 charge). Groups welcome to book the entire site.

Crai Valley Glamping is within the Brecon Beacons Dark Sky Reserve, so one thing you must spend time doing while you’re here is simply admiring the starry night sky. There’s also a magnificent underworld to explore, though. Trek beneath the earth at the Day y Ogof Show Caves (01639 730284) 6 miles away. Here the River Llynfell has carved a magnificent cave network – alongside a few more hammed-up visitor attractions, such as a dinosaur park with over 200 ‘life-sized’ dinosaurs and a kids play area. The museum provides some fascinating background on the discovery of the caves and there is a decent café. It’s only a tad further to Craig yr Nos Country Park, with vast riverside grounds to explore and an 1840s gothic castle, plus Pentre Riding Stables (01639 730639) just next door. Henrhyd and Pont Neath Fechan Waterfalls (12 miles; 01874 625515) are a particular Brecon Beacons highlight, while a stop in Brecon itself is a must – visit the Brecon Cathedral (01874 623857), the War Memorial Museum (01874 613310), Brecon Canal or enjoy a relaxing afternoon at Brecon promenade.

Food & Drink

Follow the 3-mile footpath over the hill to the Tanners Arms (01874638032) in Defynnog or the Usk & Railway Inn (01874 636101), a jot further in Sennybridge. By car, meanwhile, you can drive to The Tair Bull (01874 622600) – an excellent country inn that is owned by the very same folk that run the glamping site! It is a lovely traditional bar and restaurant in the village of Libanus, around 10 miles away. Include a meal here into a day of walking up to the famous Penyfan mountain. It’s got a great little garden too.

All year.

The Owner Says

Onnen Fawr Glamping is set on a 330 acre organic valley in the Brecon Beacons scenic countryside allowing guests to unwind and relax and simply enjoy the natural beauty and views of the surrounding landscape. The River Crai runs at the bottom of the meadow where the Shepherd huts are located bringing all kinds of wildlife. Try out some trout fishing or step across the stepping stones in the river and explore a secret island where you would be able to have a picnic or simply escape from it all with a blanket and a good novel.
Embrace the natural, cosy interiors on this romantic getaway. Open the doors to the terrace, and let the sounds of nature waft through the hut. Light the log burner inside or spend the evening gazing up at the stars from the hot tub and get back in touch with nature.
You’ll love this hut because of its coziness, and the views. It's perfect for couples, solo adventurers, and a small dog.

Cosy, comfortable, relaxing

The interior of the shepherd's hut was beautifully done, and very well equipped. Stunning, quiet country location. The wood fired hot tub was a real bonus. The owner was very pleasant and helpful. We had a perfect weekend.

A perfect place to start married life!

My wife and I headed straight to Onnen Fawr after our wedding only to be greeted by the lovely Karen at the gates and by some treats and fizz congratulating us at the hut! We absolutely loved our stay at the Flying Scotsman and the stunning views it offered come rain or shine. The offer to join in with a pre-arranged yoga class was as welcomed as the cute log burner, eco conscience touches of the hut and the gorgeous wooded area down the hill - we were totally in our element. The remoteness of the site along with it’s fairly near by towns to visits were a perfect way for us to enjoy our wedding buzz, and we can’t wait to return to the other two huts. Super cute, really welcoming and total Welsh bliss!

Blissful break that combines luxury with being close to nature

I spent 3 nights in the Orient Express which was wonderfully comfortable and had the most amazing view. It is a great location for exploring the Brecon Beacons. After long days walking it was lovely to come back to my hut, shower, and eat supper looking out across the hills. It is a very peaceful place, highly recommended to anyone looking for a break from busy lives. However you don't feel too isolated as it is a working farm and the family who run it are friendly and check in on their guests and even gifted some eggs from a nearby farm.

Perfect weekend break

We have just returned from 2 nights in The Flying Scotsman and it was absolutely fantastic. As a family of four we were delighted at how much space we had inside the hut. Everything is beautifully crafted and the children loved the upstairs sleeping area. Everything you could possibly need is provided, from tea and coffee right down to the all important corkscrew and pizza cutter! The hut was warm and the beds were incredibly comfortable with beautiful bed linen. Towels are provided and the shower is hot. The outdoor seating area suited us perfectly, we loved looking out over the valley and watching the sheep. The location is idyllic, quiet and remote but within a short drive of pubs and shops. The field with stepping stones through the water was a haven for the children to play in, despite the wet weather. I cannot fault our holiday and will definitely look to return again. Thank you to the team at Onnen Fawr Glamping!

Perfect retreat

We have just returned from a short break in the Malvern hut. I have to say it was bliss. A real haven in the most tranquil place. The Glamping hut was fully equipped with a luxury feel. We didn’t want to leave and will definitely be returning soon. Thank you Onnenfawr farm!

We stayed as a post Christmas getaway from the city and it was more than we could have hoped for. The bed was amazing, and we slept with the curtains open to make the most of the dark sky and star experience. The wood burner kept us warm and cosy, and meant that we had that authentic camping feel inside. The facilities were ideal, all that we needed. The cabin was clean, not dusty at all. The dishes supplied were perfect for a short break away. The bathroom and shower were also spotless. Overall, the stay was fantastic and I can't wait to book our next stay again.

Lovely hidden place

We stayed here in the middle of November after a busy few months work. Firstly I'll get the bad points out of the way. There was no one on site when we arrived to meet us or the other party that had arrived and so had difficulty finding the cabin in the dark as is not sign posted and down a track to the side of the farm yard. There was no tea, coffee or milk when we arrived which we thought was meant to be supplied. We managed to get hold of the owner by text as there is little or no mobile reception on site(thus the need for wifi) they were on holiday an the site manager was meant to be there an they got hold of them an tea etc was then supplied. The wifi didnt work at all for all of our stay. The on site manager said it should be working an that was all the assistance we got with that so no wifi for our 4 day stay. The cabin was very dusty and lots of hair on the bottom of the shower! The under floor heating thermostat had no instructions. On the plus side if you look past these issues the cabin is well laid out very cosy an with the log burner going super warm. The bed is huge an better than most hotel beds. Lots of room to relax. The folder left in the cabin gives lots of ideas of things to do, go and places to eat.

A beautiful setting and a perfect place to stay.

The shepherds hut is modern and cosy. It is designed beautifully with great quality workmanship. It was clean and well equipped. Everything had been thought of to make our stay comfortable and relaxing. The hosts were so friendly and heloful. The view from our hut across the field and onto the hills was spectacular and I particularly enjoyed looking at the view from the window at the foot of the bed. It was idyllic. We didn't want to leave and definitely hope to return.

Quiet, beautiful.

Beautifully constructed and thought out unit finished in solid oak and with tasteful decorations. Luxury toilet and shower - not your usual glamping experience. Bed was super comfy and you can open the shuttered windows to look out over the valley at nothing but green pleasantness (with the odd sheep dotted about). It was so quiet here that I took the battery out of the clock as it seemed impossibly loud! Woke to birdsong and the sun streaming through the blinds. This place really is in a league of it's own and we will be back asap. Thankyou Cerri for a wonderful weekend.

Great accommodation, amazing luxury glamping

We’ve just returned from a 3 night stay at the flying Scotsman. 2 adults, 2 children and a dog. I’m not one for camping and this was glamping at another level, total luxury in the countryside, everything you could need and plenty of space (photos make it seem smaller). Perfect location for exploring the outdoors, we will be booking again and recommend

We have just returned from our first visit here. The views are beautiful! Even on a drizzly day we ventured out to discover what was around us and we weren't disappointed. The Flying Scotsman itself was amazing. The facilities were 5* for glamping. There was everything we needed and more, the owners even provided some board games for is when we mentioned it. Really couldn't recommend it enough. We loved it and will definitely be back.
