Innovative glamping accommodation and architectural firsts, set in a remote wood in Mid Wales

Some glamping sites choose to turn back the clock. A rustic shepherd’s hut, perhaps, with an 1800s vibe or a twee log cabin with skis upon the wall. Not so on the Red Kite Estate in Mid Wales. This is a place that innovates. Faced with a timeless setting at the foot of the Elenydd Plateau – a remote stretch of the Cambrian mountains – the owners of this wooded 80 acres have turned instead to architects of the 21st century. The result is truly unique glamping structures that feed off the likes of Rolls Royce designers and aviation expertise. There’s a reason it’s featured on Channel 4’s George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and in the design pages of The Sunday Times.

The estate first began with just the one structure, a suspended turquoise orb that hangs high among the pine trees and sleeps two in a double bed. The ‘tree tent’, crafted from highbred aluminium, canvas and steam-bent ash, suspends from taught metal wires that give it a lofty position overlooking a mountain stream. Access is via a wooden bridge that leads to a raised terrace where there is also a kitchen area and an atmospheric outdoor shower. Inside, meanwhile, the cocooning felt interior is warm and cosy, with a wood-burning stove to fire up and the bed folding away into a comfortable sofa.

After the success of the Ynys Affalon tent, a similar second tree tent was built – the aptly named red ‘Dragon’s Egg’ set a couple of hundred metres away in the woods. The egg has its own access track, giving guests in each tent their own very private space, though friends could also book out both and enjoy acres upon acres all to themselves. Either way, it’s certainly the setting that really brings out the beauty in these quirky structures. Off-grid and off the ground, they offer a unique perspective on wildlife and the forest and an unbeatable location for a ‘digital detox’.

Above the trees, where the woods thin out and hilltop views take over, is the Red Kite Estate’s very newest design: The Conker. Made of aluminium and recycled plastic, this world-first, contemporary structure – a copper-clad, spherical shell – features circular windows and a hidden door that leads inside. Within, it’s all mod-cons – think LED colour lighting, bluetooth speakers, high-tech heating – with a bespoke double bed that neatly converts into a dining table and soft chairs, plus a compact kitchen area with copper kitchen wares to match. Partnered with a Scandi-style bathroom (the shower has a view to die for) and composting loo, it has everything you could need.

Whether smuggled amongst the trees or conquering the hilltop, the location of the estate opens up ample opportunities. There’s the stream to explore, footpaths on the doorstep and wildlife aplenty. As the name suggests, red kites swooping overhead are not an unusual spectacle. To really get up close, though, it’s a 20-minute drive to the Gigrin Farm Feeding Station – not to be missed. There’s much to be said, however, for staying put and winding down in your own private setting. Peace and solitude are best served beside the campfire. Perhaps with a marshmallow or two.

Each tree tent features a double bed (bedding, linen and towels provided) which folds into a sofa bed during the day, a log burner (logs provided), lighting and a side table. Outside, raised decks feature a table and chairs, a well-equipped outdoor kitchen and, on ground level, an outdoor shower and a toilet hut. The Conker features a unique double bed (bedding, linen and towels provided) which folds apart into a dining table with surrounding soft seating, lighting, electricity, bluetooth speakers, a (very) compact kitchen with a hob, a sink and all the utensils you need. Adjacent there is a timber cabin with a shower and composting loo. Outdoor dining terrace and a campfire pit. Campfires and BBQs permitted at each unit.

Suitable For

Each Tree Tent, as well as The Conker, sleeps up to 2 adults and is glamping only. Kids over 10 are welcome (under 10 by prior arrangement), but pets are not permitted.

Though you may easily see them circling overhead the private forest, the best place to watch red kites close up is at Gigrin Farm Feeding Station (01597 810243) near Rhayader. It's just under 12 miles from the Red Kite Estate and is excellent both for seeing the birds and learning a bit more about them and the success of their breeding in Wales. The dams and reservoirs of the Elan Estate (01597 810880) are situated within an AONB a half-hour’s drive from the site. As you approach the town of Rhayader you will see the road signs to The Elan Valley Reservoirs. Visit the coffee shop that's open seven days a week (10am–5.30pm) and take a scenic walk around the reservoir. Try out some wild swimming at Pen-doll Rocks, Builth Wells: a lovely stretch of the Wye just outside Builth Wells with a variety of flat rocks and wooden planks that connect them and fairly easy access to the water – 7 miles from the site. Visit Henryhd Waterfall, the highest fall in South Wales located in the Brecon Beacons.

For Sea, beach and dunes Try Borth, just north of Aberystwyth on Wales’ western shoreline. Heading north along the coastline through Borth itself until you come to the Dyfi National Nature Reserve – great sand dunes to explore, with beach and water on each side. You can park up on the beach itself (£2 charge) and watch kite surfers and horses alongside ice cream vans and paddling children. Or for those more interested in the written and spoken word, try Hay-on-Wye's myriad of second-hand bookshops, and The Willow Globe's utterly charming and unique outdoor theatre (01597 811487).

Food & Drink

It's a long-ish but pleasant three mile walk over the moorland and down the lane to the oldest pub in Powys, The Red Lion (01597 860204) at Llanafan-fawr, where there are real ales on tap and hearty meals on the menu. Nothing fancy but a real pub atmosphere – Wednesday night is the one for steak and wine! Be warned, it does close for a short while after lunch service and reopens in the evening. Four miles away at Newbridge-on-Wye, next to the New Inn (and owned by the pub landlord; 01597 860211), is a rare breeds butcher shop. They have rather random opening times but if the pub is open (which it is at lunch and dinner Mon–Thurs and Sunday, all day Fri and Saturday) then ask at the bar and they will open the shop for you.

The Conker is available all year, while the tents are from April–October only.

Getting There

The Red Kite Estate is four miles from Newbridge-on-Wye. You will be sent an e-guide once you've made your booking, which includes full detailed directions from Newbridge-on-Wye to your glamping accommodation. When you do leave the main road, do remember that the single track path does go on for quite a bit, so don't give up – you'll be on the right track and the views are wonderful so enjoy! If you arrive at the very local pub, The Red Lion (01597 860204), during opening hours, you have probably gone too far but Alan the landlord should be able to direct you back (particularly if you buy a pint).

Unreal setting!

We stayed in the moon conker for my husbands 40th and he enjoyed every second. The setting is amazing and you feel like you are completely alone in the Forrest apart from a few woodland critters. David and Anj have created a place full of love and wonder for the natural world.

Utterly sublime

Instantly fell in love with this place and already looking at when we can back. The location couldn't be more perfect, the accommodation is excellent, everything you could need or want and more; personal favourite was the pizza oven for the open fire. With the incredible red kites overhead with breakfast every morning, what more could you want!

Overwhelmingly stunning and idyllic

Nothing can prepare you for the incredible and magical setting and set up of the Dragons Egg. So much space and the feeling of being in nature, away from everything is wonderful. Everything was perfect; cooking food in the outdoor kitchen high in the trees, enjoying hot showers al fresco while marvelling at the surroundings, the comfort of the tree tent itself with log burner on rainy days, being swayed to sleep in the breeze accompanied by the sounds of the babbling brook below, evenings by the fire with beers cooled in the water, even going to the toilet was a rare delight! Lovely little welcome package from the hosts too. We had a wonderful break here, we just wished we could have stayed longer. Or forever!! Thank you Dragons Egg, you are amazing!

Directions were absolutely spot on - found it straight away. We loved every single minute of the weekend. High class squirrels ate all our Marks and Spencer’s goodies 🤣, I kid you not Bramley apple pies, Percy Pig’s and Bombay Mix. The camp is absolutely fabulous!!! In this busy world this is a surreal and wonderful place to unwind and disconnect. We had a magical weekend and hope to return soon.. We wouldn’t change a thing - Steve and Lisa.

Magical stay at the conker!

Where do I start on my stay at the conker apart from the fact that it is the most magical experience that I have ever had! We were so lucky with the weather which made it even more special - the views are absolutely breathtaking, we really didn't want to leave. The attention to detail that Anjana and David have is fantastic - down to the fresh milk, flowers and welsh cakes on the bed waiting for us... I would highly recommend climbing to the top of the hills to see the conker from the top - we just sat there for hours with our music playing and a picnic taking in the surreal views that surrounded us. I stayed with my friend for her birthday, however after showing my partner the photos, he is desperate to see it for himself so we will most definitely be returning. Thank you for having us on what will be an unforgettable stay! Eliza x

Unique place to stay!

Our thanks to Anjana & Dave for having us as their first guests at the Conker - it was a brilliant experience, and included us having our 2 year old springer spaniel in pod, and unlike anywhere we've stayed before! Little trek up the path to the pod, with a great fire pit area & little deck to sit out with our morning cuppa watching the kites & lambs. Lots of lovely thoughtful touches in the Conker which we really appreciated & enjoyed hearing the owl in the night, watching the stars through the roof porthole. Hope our suggestions helped Dave - very best wishes to you both on this exciting new part of the Red Kite Estate.

A little piece of heaven!

What an absolute treat these tree tents are! Location is absolutely beautiful, surrounded by the noises of nature and stunning views. From long walks in the wonderful countryside and returning to the cosiest tree tent to warm up by the log burner to lazy days in the trees by the river watching the sheep roam the forest, relaxing in the hammock and roasting marshmallows on the fire at night whilst watching the stars above, this place has it all. My husband was absolutely thrilled with his birthday trip to this magical place and we both loved every second. Thank you for the lovely local welcome goodies and the balloons and cupcakes that were in our tent for my husband, a lovely surprise for him on arrival. We have already told so many people about this little spot of heaven and we will definitely be returning. Thank you so much Red Kite Tree Tent, you were a dream!

Perfect weekend in the tree-tops

I was very excited about my stay at the Dragon Egg, and the experience did not disappoint! From the moment you arrive at the small wooden bridge and climb up into the tree-tops, you enter a magical wonderland that's all your's. The kitchen area is fab, and very well equipped (bring a decent cool box if staying for a few days though). The shower and 'loo with a view' are also an experience! The tree tent is perfect - you make your own foldout bed on arrival (duvet, pillows, blanket and extra sleeping bag, good for chilly cloudless nights) are all provided. We arrived to a thoughtful hamper of goodies, and enough logs for the wood burner for the night - there is an axe and supply of wood ready for you to create your own for the next night! My only complaint is we didn't stay for long enough, can't wait to go back!

The most amazing place to if you want peace and quiet. Beautiful scenery all around and no mobile or tv you don’t even think about it.

Epic taste of the wilderness and fantastic craftsmanship!

Getting (what seems like) the entire forest to yourself was the first of many exciting thoughts buzzing through our heads as we arrived. Shortly followed by the excellent craftsmanship, as you walk over the wooden bridge, up wooden steps and into the elevated kitchen. The kitchen is fully equipped, with warm water, gas and a lovely big dining table with fresh flowers to boot! The bedroom is wonderfully cosy and heats up in minutes once the log burner is on, and the bed is very comfy. The shower is warm and powerful, with that added excitement of being naked in your very own forest! The loo 'room' is also very clean with a wonderful view of the hills. ...but most importantly, the bonfire is the perfect setting for a proposal, I should know... :-)

Response from Red Kite Tree Tents

Congratulations you two.  You must come back for your honeymoon - a bottle of champagne on us. Or better still a woodland wedding.... xx

Fairy tale Family Tree Adventure

Here is the text: Our family went from not wanting to do this to wanting to stay in the Red Kite Tree Tent FOREVER. It feels like you have escaped into the wilds but where someone has artfully created a nurturing space. The pod is both luxurious and practical. Being able to cook besides a babbling brook on an open fire, or on a fully equipped kitchen with a gas stove high in the trees. Read books in loungers, look for fairies, shower (in a wonderful hot water shower) overlooking the forest or just watch the sun set and the moon and stars rise. There are little paths and walkways up the hill side and connecting the trees, tent, living space etc - meaning even making a cup of tea feels like an adventure. We had warm weather so explored local wild swimming spots (researched and recommended by the owners). As well as local villages and pubs, but each day we loved coming back to our little tent high in the forest and relaxing deep in luxurious nature. The children and husband (aka big kid) keep talking about our time in the forest and the tent in the trees. (Note they are 10 years and above - for much younger children it might be too extreme!) We all can't wait to go back!

The perfect piece of peace

We recently spent the weekend in the Ynys Affalon tent for a birthday weekend away. It was a truly, wonderful experience. From parking up the car, every sight was a perfect picture. The whole area has been well thought out to be practical, yet eco friendly. The fresh bread, milk and butter supplied was lovely, along with the fresh flowers ready on the table set. The first evening we chilled out with a few beers sat on the decking next to the river. The second we sat in the same spot with a campfire whilst roasting marshmallows. In the day we went walking and found a high up spot to sit and have a quiet picnic, cheeky glass of prosseco. Watching the wildlife running around below us. In the night, the sound of the river, and the sway of the tree tent made for a perfect sleep. All cooking facilities and bedding were supplied which was super handy! *Tips - pack a few citronella candles, keeps the gnats away in the evenings. Pack a torch as the toilet is just up off the main deck of the tent and it can be quite dark in the evenings heading there. It took us away from our every day, hectic lives and gave us 48 hours of total peace and quiet (phone signal - we had to walk a while for me to get any, my other half had it in certain spots around the tent) It was like being in another world - a world we really loved! It's a beautiful spot - and we hope to visit again sometime soon. Thanks for having us!!

Peaceful and romantic experience

My husband and I had a glorious time in this perfectly peaceful and outstandingly beautiful bolthole far from the madding crowd. We loved being together in this haven for just a few days but would want to stay longer and will definitely be back!

Secluded and beautiful

All the amenities are provided in this unique camping experience. The tent sways a little in the wind which is all part of the charm. The walk up hill to the toilet was a little difficult at night but they are building a rope bridge which will make that journey so much easier! This was a great experience from building our own fires to cook on to showering outdoors all in beautiful welsh scenery!

Last year's magical woodland retreat. September 12th - 15th, 2017

Beware of the muffin thieving bird! We had an amazing time at this beautiful place when we stayed last year, and it was so relaxing chilling by the tyre or the hammock. The countryside around was breathtaking; highly recommend you go for a horse ride through the Welsh mountains! (LD1 CPN) Thank you for letting us stay here and hopefully we'll be back soon!

Escape from City

We are a couple from London. It was a lovely escape for us from the chaos of big city. Views are absolutely stunning, and relaxing. Shame we didn't have time to do everything what we wanted. So we look forward to visiting again. Jane and Neil xx
