Dol-Llys Caravan and Camping
Trefeglwys Road, Llanidloes, Powys SY18 6JA
Dol-Llys is camping as it used to be (and some would argue, still should be). This refreshingly understated site on the Evans family's working farm has been pulling in the punters for over 25 years. There's no bells and whistles here; no guyrope gimmickry or fancy organised entertainment (except if you count the kiddies' play area). The beauty of Dol-Llys lies in its simplicity. And in this swathe of such staggering Welsh beauty, simplicity is all you really need.
This family-friendly site was crafted with families firmly in mind. We say 'crafted', but in reality there is a pleasingly laid-back approach to whole affair. There's no formal pitches as such, just seven acres of soft, level, well-kempt grass with ample room for a scattering of 30-40 tents or so.
Admittedly, some of Dol-Llys is given over to caravans (hence the tarmac paths), but we're pleased to report that these are in a separate area to the canvas contingent. Campers can pitch up by the facilities block for easy nocturnal access to the more than adequate facilities, but the best spots are down by the idyllic river.
With wading camping-anglers casting off for the plentiful trout and grayling (free-fishing available onsite), it's hard to believe that the gently babbling brook snaking its way through the Dol-Llys farm is in fact one of the earliest stretches of the mighty River Severn. The source is a mere eight miles away at the foot of the Plynlimon mountain. Lively Powys market town, Llanidloes is itself the first town on the river's course. More importantly, it has nine pubs – we're reliably informed that's more per square mile than Glasgow! A 'watering hole' in every sense then...
The Owner Says
The perfect site for a relaxing retreat in the heart of the Mid Wales country site. We take a laid back approach to camping, allowing guests to pitch where they please and take as much room as they require, whether its along the beautiful banks for the River Severn, on one of the well kept paddocks with access to electric points or hidden away amongst trees, shrubs and wind grasses.
This paired with the option of a camp fire or fire pit and new high standard facilities will make anyone's stay unforgettable.
Our campsite makes the ideal base to explore the beautiful Mid Wales scenery. There is plenty to do with scenic walks, bird watching, golf, pony trekking, clay pigeon shooting and bicycle hire all nearby. We offer free fishing on site along the river - this extends through the fields, which proves very popular with guests and the historic market town of Llanidloes is located half a mile away, where you can find a range of restaurants and pubs, as well as a weekly market and small independent shops.
Dol Llys is also a working beef and sheep farm and campers are welcome to feed the animals and watch the farm activities throughout the season, which includes activities such as lambing, shearing and harvest. If you are luck you can also witness calf's being born.
Facilities on site include toilets and showers. We have recently completed a new shower block with 3 private and heated rooms, which include a shower, sink and toilet. There is also a large washing up area and space for hairdryer use etc.
The Campers Kitchen, situated in a converted barn, houses seating and eating space, a fridge/freezer, microwave, toaster and kettle all free of charge. There is also a small tourist information area located here.

Good Mayday camp
Stayed for 4 nights over the May day bank holiday. Was surprised to find very few campers, maybe the weather forecast put them off. As it turned out the only rain was on Sunday night and a short shower Monday pm. You can pitch where you like unless you want electric where the grass is cut short. The main field is a bit longer but not a problem. Campfires are allowed as long as off the ground, there are a few washing machine drums available. The facilities are 1st rate. Campers kitchen with free wi-fi, toaster, kettle and tables. Wash-up sinks and washing machine in a separate building across the yard. Showers I think there were 5, 3 of which were with loo and sink and heater. Showers took 20p or £1 coins. 40p gave you plenty of time to shower. It should be noted that if you camp at the far end of the field it is a bit of a walk to the showers. Fire wood is available to buy. Llanidloes is less than a mile from the site and has a Spar on the way in and a Co-op on the far side of town. As well as a lot of independent shops and market on Sat. Gas cylinder exchange (Camping Gaz and Calor) can be bought from Huws Grey in the way into town. The river Severn is quite shallow so ideal for paddling and has a stony beach. I would think in the peak season the site could be busy (especially by the river) but if you go in between peak times you may have the site to your self. The only down side to the site is the road noise (wasn't helped by the wind direction) from the main road which is a good 300 yds away but it was quiet at night. All in all an excellent site with 1st class facilities.
FEEL LIKE OLIVER -- I WANT MORE!
WOW just back from spending 5 nights with wife and two kids in our family tent at the best campsite we have been to EVER!!! The smiles on all our faces , the stunning views , the river to play in for hours, top notch facilities farm animals to see and feed in the barn and to add to that what wonderful hosts Janet and Andrew are. Hadn"t got out of the driveway and we were all talking about when we could go back ------ and we will very soon.
Superb friendly site
Very relaxed but well organised site with super facilities and idyllic riverside position within easy walking distance of LLanidloes town centre. Very friendly and helpful proprietors. I had the benefit of the whole river bank to myself for two nights in late October - just perfect and keen to get back there next spring!
Labor Day Retreat
Just finished a 3 night stay here and it was as amazing as I had hoped. We had two tent pitches right on the water, and since we arrived late Friday evening the owner took us down to the water front and helped us find somewhere to set up. Lovely people, and were more than helpful! Showers/toilets were much better than I have experienced at other locations. Hot showers after a day of hiking is a huge plus. Great location, and waking up to the creek and country side over a long weekend was wonderful. I will absolutely be going again.
Steam Genie Swansea
My wife and I spent a week here at the end of June, what a fantastic site. I am trying to say good things about Dol Llys that other people haven't already said but I am finding it very difficult. I have camped in my Motor Home all over Western Europe and many sites in the UK but this site beats them all, I intended to stay for 2 days only which is my norm but it`s such a relaxing place and after meeting Jan and Andrew mine hosts we just wanted to stay put. They were so kind and helpful which made our stay so much more enjoyable

PS Andrew we will definitely be back soon, even bought a fishing rod yesterday.
This is our second year here, fantastic site, fantastic facilities, we will be going back next year,
Great Family Weekend!!
We spent August bank holiday here (tent, 2 adults and 3 children). The site was busy which is understandable over bank holiday, however this wasn't an issue. It still felt spacious and the facilities were kept clean the entire time.
The river was a major plus point, which kept the children entertained, as did the animals around the farm, including horses, sheep, calfs and a puppy. The owners were really helpfully and friendly and brought us logs for our fire in the evenings.
Over all a well run and tidy camping site with a lovely family atmosphere, will be returning next year!!
Mid Wales Heaven
Such a beautiful campsite in the middle of the Mid Wales countryside. Very well maintained and brilliant owners, really helpful! We camped by the river in a little secluded area surrounded by bushes + had a fire pit for the evenings.
Lovely warm weather and great facilities, (the wet rooms were the best I've seen on a campsite), and a lovely place for children, the river was nice and low when we were there a few weeks ago.
Will most definitely be returning in the near future.
Relaxed and friendly
Beautiful secluded site in a scenic location, with plenty of space for camping and field games, we given a fire pit to use which was a bonus. The children loved the river and visiting the farm and all the animals, and we will definitely be booking a spot this year!
Great holiday on a lovely site!
We stayed In the last week of August(2 adults, 3 children), and were so pleased with the site. Great location and the site was very well maintained. The facilities on site were some of the best I've seen with new heated wet rooms and washing up area. The useful campers kitchen also proved useful!
The river was a big hit with the children who spent most of there time swimming or kayaking and the evenings we spent around a campfire on its banks made our holiday.
The owners were really welcoming and helpful throughout the week, with a good knowledge of the local town and surrounding area. There are several good pubs and restaurants in Llanidloes and a butcher who sells meat from Dol-Llys itself, as we'll as other local farms.
Thank you for such and enjoyable stay, can't wait to return next year!
Didnt want to go home!!
Hiya, We stayed at this campsite for the first time in August.. Fantastic. We had a great pitch in the caravan field right in the corner, was so peaceful and quiet... :).
The owners were all very helpful and very friendly. Got very friendly with the sheep in the next field they came to the fence same time twice a day aawwww.
Had great weather and days out to the forest and to a street market and the evenings were spent sitting outside enjoying the peace and quiet.
Just cant wait to go back.
Thank you to all the staff you,re doing a fantastic job :)
Caz ( August 2013 ) xx
One of the best campsites I've been to
I had never thought of camping in mid-Wales before but liked the idea of the rural setting, proximity to the river, ability to take dogs and build camp fires. I wasn't disappointed, in fact it exceeded all expectations. The people who run this site are incredibly friendly and helpful and the setting is absolutely idyllic. The facilities on site are the best I've seen and never have I woken up to the sound of a river running past my tent. Perfect! Can't wait to go back, can't recommend it highly enough.
Great mid-Wales Site
We stayed here for two separate one nights on our way to/from Pembrokeshire and it was the perfect place to stay to break up the journey. It was very quiet, good hot showers and excellent value. We parked our campervan right next to the river and lit an open fire on our last night - all totally chilled. Highly recommended.
a wonderfully chilled site!
We were lucky enough to cop a squat on the bank of the river, which meant we could also build a fire pit. What could be nicer? Bring a hammer though if you are pitching near the bank, and possibly rock pegs-you will bend a few otherwise! Very quiet, very relaxed, good clean facilities, thoroughly recommended. Good for watching the stars too-there are no lights on the site after dark at all, so bring a torch. Lots to see close by-the outdoors shop in town is very good and even the local Spar has all you need to sort you out.
Idyllic setting in a beautiful area
For a back to basics weekend in a tent after many years, we couldn't have chosen a better campsite and setting. From booking to leaving the site, the owners have got this spot on and nothing is too much trouble to them. The facilities were great, excellent kitchen with fridge etc if you need it. Clean family shower rooms and pitches right next to the river or tucked away in your own private little haven if you want peace and quiet, this site has it all. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the children loved dipping in and out of the river to cool off and their highlight has to be a quick ride out on the quad with Andrew to feed the sheep. I haven't seen my eldest daughter smile so much in a long time.
I'd recommend bringing beach type tie up shoes for the kids if they're paddling. The rocks are quite slippy and they need something to wear to grip a little. My two had flip flops on and we watched both pairs take off down stream at highspeed. Quite funny to us but they weren't impressed at getting back to the edge in barefeet hehe. We loved sitting out til late with the campfire lit, searching for stars and satellites. Such a relaxing place. We will be back hopefully sooner rather than later. Maybe with a small delivery of yellow buckets to replace those red ones ;-)
