A single shepherd’s hut on a 23-acre smallholding between the Cambrian Mountains and the West Wales coast

You can leave the alarm clock at home if you’re heading for a stay at Brondel Luxury Shepherd's Hut. That’s not just because the king-sized bed in the lone  hut is so comfy that you won’t want to get out of it. And it’s not because super-friendly host Elen would find you one if you asked. It’s because the birdsong at dawn can be, as Elen’s husband Rhys describes it: “a bit full on”. If that sounds like bliss, book a stay. If not, get some ear plugs and go anyway.

The birdsong and visiting bats, red kites and hares make it ideal for nature lovers but it’s got wider appeal too. Tucked away on a smallholding in mid-Wales, it’s the perfect place for a romantic retreat or a quiet family holiday. Readers, writers and romantics will be content to gaze at the valley views or sit by the on-site pond. Walkers can stroll a mile-and-a-half in either direction to find a pub and children can explore the 23-acre site to meet chickens, ducks and sheep. But it’s not all sleepy pursuits. This is Wales after all – the adventure capital of the UK with the Cambrian mountains to climb, bike trails to conquer and that stunning coastal path within reach at Aberystwyth.

No matter how you choose to spend your days, nights at Brondel Shepherd's Hut will be comfortable and cosy. It’s been kitted out with everything you need and nothing you don’t. There’s a toilet, a shower, a kettle, a fridge – even a hairdryer. But there’s no television WiFi. You’ll have to make do with the view; fortunately, it’s a good one and the sky at night makes for particularly excellent viewing. Funnily enough, Rhys works in television and travels all over to make programmes, including Wales’ answer to Countryfile. But there’s one rural location he likes above all others. For Rhys, there’s no place like home. Luckily for us, he and Elen are happy to share it with the rest of us.

Nearby

Guests are free to roam the 23-acre smallholding. A footpath through the fields offers a route north to a highly-recommended pub in Pisgah or south to the picturesque village of Llanfihangel Y Creuddyn – where there’s a pub and a 13th century church. For a more challenging walk, head to the summit of 741-metre Plynlimon (or Pumlumon Fawr) about 15 miles from site. The Wales Coast Path also offers fantastically scenic walking and you can join it at Abersytwyth. The Rheidol Riding Centre (01970 880863) is 3½ miles from site and Devil’s Bridge Falls (01970 890233) are 7 miles away. From there you can step aboard the Vale of Rheidol Railway (01970 625819) for a scenic journey to the seaside town of Aberstwyth. From site, Aberystwyth is a 15-minute drive (just over 7 miles). It has shops, eateries, a castle and is home to the National Library of Wales. For a wilder beach with dunes and plenty of space head just north of town to Ynyslas Beach. Mountain bikers will find fantastic riding at Bwlch Nant yr Arian (01970 890453) 9 miles away and the Hafod Estate (01974 282887) is about 10 miles from site.

Food & Drink

You can help yourself to freshly-laid eggs on site but, for everything else, head to Abersytwyth where you’ll find a wide range of shops including supermarkets. There is a farmers’ market in the town on the first and third Saturdays in the month. There are 2 pubs within walking distance of site (1½ miles) which serve food: the highly-recommended Halfway Inn (01970 880631) in Pisgah and The Farmer’s Arms (01974 261275) in Llanfihangel Y Creuddyn. For a special dinner, you might like to try the restaurant at Nanteos (01970 600522) – Rhys and Elen recommend the tasting menu. They also recommend Pysgoty (01970 624611), a small fish restaurant in Aberystwyth, where you’ll find plenty of other eateries too.

Once you start to climb, take the second left down a narrow lane signposted Tynfrondel/alltfedw. Follow this road until the road forks. Take a left and this will lead you to the shepherd’s hut.

The nearest mainline railway station is at Aberystwyth. There are infrequent buses to Llanfihangel y Creuddyn which is 1½ miles from Brondel Glamping but Elen and Rhys are able to offer a pick-up service from the village. Contact them directly to arrange this.

A Little Corner of Calm Tranquillity

Normally the dog and I are away camping every few weeks from April to September, but 2020 meant that didn't happen and when campsites were once again allowed to open there wasn't a suitable campsite with vacancies to be found. I decided we deserved a little luxury, switched the search to glamping and soon found this fabulous Hut. I found a few others but kept coming back to this one, booked it for October and crossed fingers and toes that it wouldn't need to be moved (the coronavirus booking guarantee was a great stress reliever). A text from Elen on the morning of arrival made it feel like the holiday had really begun even though I was only a few miles down the M62. We arrived late afternoon to discover that Elen had been across and switch the heater on so the Hut was warm, cosy and welcoming. The facilities are fantastic, everything you need in a space that is deceptively spacious. We never did light the log burner, the wall heater was on for a couple of hours a day and that kept the Hut toasty and warm. The views were great and we even got a couple of really good sunsets! It was lovely to lie in bed listening to the owls out hunting and the dawn chorus was a great way start to each day. Devils bridge is well worth a visit especially if it has rained a lot in the days before your visit - take waterproofs if you want to stand on the viewing platform immediately by the falls but don't fancy getting wet! Ynyslas Beach is a lovely walk, we parked at Borth and walked up the beach and then back down the inland path on the opposite side of the golf course. The Hafod Estate is great for a full days walking, the paths are clearly signed and there are some spectacular views. I have been recommending Brondel to all my friends and family, although part of me thinks I should be discouraging others from visiting, if everyone else is going it will mean there might not be any vacancies when I want to visit again. Thank you Elen & Rhys we look forward to visiting again.

Perfect in every way

We have just returned from a wonderful three night stay in the Brondel Shepherd’s Hut and we cannot rate it highly enough, it really is perfect. The hut is a great size with ample space (two of us and a three year old). It was comfy, clean and dressed lovely with everything that you could need. There was nothing we needed that wasn’t available and if there was I am sure Elen, the fabulous host would have somehow obliged. Elen was fantastic, you couldn’t ask for a better host, from the text we received in the morning ready to welcome us, greeting us after we had unpacked (from a socially distanced location, and with cake!) and bringing us a slide that her children had outgrown, when she saw our son at the door. The location of the hut was perfect for us, especially in the current climate. It is in the middle of the glorious Wales countryside with not much around for some time apart from a couple of farms, lots of sheep and a few cows. We loved to watch the sun set over the hills from the bench at the front of the hut and enjoyed relaxing in the hammock when we could. The hut is just far enough from Elen’s home that you feel you are on your own, away from the world but not isolated as Elen and her family are just a short walk away. A fabulous, well needed, break where we enjoyed playing ball games on the grass in front of the hut, relaxing in the sunshine, watching the wildlife, chilling in the hut and going for lots of nice walks. For our first break away this year we don’t think we could have felt safer anywhere else. For a long weekend, this is possibly the best self catering break we have had in terms of location and accommodation. I am not a person who is easily pleased and can always find a fault somewhere, but not here :) We hope to return one day and would like to thank Elen for the lovely break, making us feel so welcome and wish her and the business all the best for the future during these strange and difficult times.

Lovely, cozy retreat

We had a lovely few days in this gorgeous shepherd’s hut. Everything we needed was there and the space was used cleverly. Log burner was a lovely touch, but we didn’t need it as the heating kept us warm enough. Lovely hot powerful shower. Very comfy, huge bed. We enjoyed spending a rainy day chilling in the hut. Our dog enjoyed it too! Nearby, we enjoyed the waterfalls at Devil’s Bridge (15 min drive), had a lovely walk at the Hafod Estate - I would recommend the Ystwyth Gorge walk (15 min drive), and also enjoyed walking the dog on Ynyslas Beach (24 min drive). Lots of beautiful countryside nearby and a perfect place to stay to enjoy it. Thank you Elen and Rhys for making us feel very welcome.

Beautiful surroundings and cosy hut

Our two night stay here was amazing. The hut was just the cosiest place ever and when we went to explore the surroundings, we couldn’t wait to get back to stick the log burner on. Our pup enjoyed the stay too! The host Elen was fantastic, she messaged to make sure everything was fine. There was milk, coffee/tea and showering products for us which was a lovely touch. We would definitely stay here again as the fields surrounding the hut were beautiful and the sunset was so picturesque amongst the trees.
