A yurt farm without yurts but with plenty of space, wilderness and peace and quiet

What is a yurt farm? Is it a regular farm that happens to have yurts on it? Or is it a place where yurts are farmed, grown from tiny little yurtlings into fully-grown wood and canvas structures? In fact, the Yurt Farm in central Cerdigion is neither. And, despite the name, it is currently, confusingly, not home to any yurts at all.

Having spent years welcoming glampers to their namesake structures, The Yurt Farm have taken a break for 2020, while they re-shape the farm to make it even better than before. In the interim, however, couples or families can enjoy the site all to themselves, with a beautifully restored train carriage available in the most beautiful area of the farm.

Overlooking a spacious hay meadow, formerly occupied by the yurts, the train carriage has gorgeous views of the Cambrian Mountains. The location of this glampsite is perfect; ridiculously remote and enveloped in the sort of rich, green countryside for which Wales is famous. And the love is evident everywhere; a welcome basket of tasty veg for guests; the comfy king-sized organic mattress on your bed; a woodburner to keep you cosy. The smell of the western red cedar that lines the carriage is incredible.

Most of the glamping time here will no doubt be spent outdoors, with so much space to fill on the farm. In all, there are 150 acres to be discovered, criss-crossed by a network of farm trails and children are free to explore, make dens, hide in the long grass, play in the sand, hang off rope swings, collect eggs, be licked by cows and gorge themselves silly on the blackcurrants and gooseberries that grow in the meadow.

With the striking Cambrian mountains as a backdrop to this enchanting place, there’s no doubt this beautiful, remote location enhances the blissed-out go-slow vibe. But if it’s the yurts your after on this wild and beautiful yurt farm, then, until next year, the farmer hasn’t finished growing them yet.

Food & Drink

Our nearest pub The Hungry Ram, is only a 30 minute up the lane in the old village school.   They serve great food and drink to eat in or take away.  Just over 3 miles away is the traditional Rhos Yr Hafod Inn (01974 272644) at Cross Inn with the tiny windows, thick walls, crackling fires and decorated oak beams that all old pubs should have. Foodies will want to head a bit further to Aberaeron harbour and the delightful Harbourmaster Hotel (01545 570 755). For an open fire, great ale and food go to Y Talbot (01974 298208) in Tregaron.

The Owner Says

The Yurt Farm was set-up in 2009 by Thea and Laurie on their organic family farm, twenty minutes from the sea. Four muddy children and a few changes later, we now run as an exclusive use site with just the Train Carriage for hire.  The Train Carriage sits in a hay meadow (formerly inhabited by 4 yurts, hence the name!) and is surrounded by woodland and very big starry sky at night.

Collect eggs from the hens that cluck around the field and fry them up for breakfast on your campfire while you listen to the birds singing.  From your doorstep, wander along the many country paths and quiet lanes.  There's a pub within walking distance for a drink and food.  They even serve takeaways too.

The sea is only 20 minutes away.  Explore the sandy beaches, pretty harbours and quiet coves or Cardigan Bay.  Dolphin watching is a must too, it's one of the best places in the UK to spot them.

Play games in the cabin.  Take a hot solar-powered shower and relax while your children build dens and catch grasshoppers in the long grass... you'll love it xx

Fire up the pizza oven in the evening for a woodsmoke infused feast.  Snuggle down in the super cosy Train Carriage as you watch the stars come out.  You might even see the owls too... you'll love it xx

A moment of sanity

We had a beautiful stay, comfortable, clean, warm. It was such a welcome break from the chaos of day to day life and gave us back a moment of sanity after a tough year. Just heaven really.

A wonderful, inspirational, long week in haven. We should have booked a longer stay!

What a find The Yurt Farm is! I really can not put into words how wonderful this break was. Thea and Laurie are an amazing couple, so inspirational. Their eco lifestyle, drive, creativity and attention to detail is reflected throughout this wonderful fairytale dream found in Wales. There are so many highlights to this break it would be impossible to list them all. Our son didn't want to leave and I have to agree, neither did I. Highlights for me, other then beautifully crafted accommodation and wonderful views, were the little things, making it even more special. Herbs planted near the carriage, for cooking. A bird feeder attracting tits and jay's next to the sink in the cabin, you watch whilst washing up. An array of outside cooking facilities and equipment, from a pizza oven, to large cast iron cooking pots and my son's favourite a waffle toaster, that we could use on the open fire. We felt no need to explore further a field. We will be booking again for next year, but next time 5 nights, as 3 nights wasn't nearly enough.

Response from The Yurt Farm

What a lovely surprise to read your glowing review. Thank you so much for enjoying our place and taking the time to switch off in the Train Carriage. It’s really nice to hear that you picked up on all the little details we have made. We’re looking forward to your next longer visit already :)

Fantastic post-lockdown Escape!

We were honoured to be the first ‘post-lockdown’ guests. We had a wonderful ‘no-compromise’ stay in the cosy Train Carriage with blissful hot showers after a day’s surfing, delicious take-away pepper squid from the ‘Harbourmaster’ In Aberaeron and hours of blissful solitude to read and relax. Just what the doctor ordered after months of too much time spent in front of a computer! Would heartily recommend!

Response from The Yurt Farm

What a lovely review. Thank you so much.
It was lovely to see you all relaxed and enjoying the field, cabin and carriage. So glad it was the perfect antidote you were looking for post lockdown.
I was jealous of your trips out to watch seaside sunsets, takeaways and dolphin spotting. You’ve inspired us to do more of that this summer.
Oh, and thanks for looking after the hens too!

Beautiful and peaceful

We have 3 children 8,12&14 - no WiFi, no electricity could have meant 3 upset bored kids but no, they made friends, built fires, created their own pizzas and even played cluedo and scrabble with their old folks. We all loved it. We properly relaxed, enjoyed each other’s company whilst taking in the wonderful scenery. We couldn’t have asked for more from Laurie and his super family.

Love, care and black currants

Excellent facilities and beautiful details throughout. So much love and care has gone into this campsite. We hired the two cuckoo yurts which worked for our family of 5 with 3 teenagers aged 14-19. Wonderful weekend and the highlight for me was the black currants, they have never tasted so good!

The Yurt Farm

We arrived on a very rainy dark night in a steamed up vw camper (hired hence never driven before) and once the wood burner was lit the most perfect long weekend began. We were made to feel very welcome from the moment we arrived with handmade hearts( honeymoon) to a message on the blackboard all discovered at different times just to enhance the feeling. We awoke to discover the most wonderful site that we will return to time and time again, it truly is perfect. The children couldn’t wait to use the solar showers and the compost toilet was another attraction. We cooked both in the cabin and on the open fire and everything we needed was there. Ceridigion and north pembrokeshire are some of the nicest places to stay in wales and there is plenty to do what ever your interests. We always looked forward to getting back to the yurt and never tired of the site. On the day we left, the morning sun was glorious, the site was deserted and the world seemed perfect. I really can not wait to go back to this little piece of paradise.

The Yurt Farm

We discovered The Yurt Farm by lucky chance and fell in love with it from our first visit. We have visited twice now and are already planning our next holiday! The farm setting is idyllic. So peaceful and beautiful, you feel relaxed as soon as you arrive. The yurts are wonderfully ’kitted out’, cosy and practical with a luxurious feel you certainly don’t get from a tent! Everything from the communal cabin, the great showers and toilets, the outside pizza oven and the farm land to explore just add to the uniqueness of the experience. Thea, Laurie and their lovely family are great hosts, and we were made to feel really comfortable and were welcomed back like friends on our second visit. The area around has lots to offer, with our particular favourite being the Centre for Alternative Technology which is a great day out. We can’t recommend this holiday highly enough!

The Yurt Farm

Wow what an amazing experience, we went there to relax and get away from everyday life. Well it worked a treat. Sooooo relaxing and great facilities. The Yurts had everything you need for our weeks stay. Being able to cook over a fire brought back memories from my younger days. Laurie & Thea are great host so friendly and welcoming. Love the surrounding area too, especially enjoyed Machynlleth. Definitely worth a visit, shall be going back soon.

The Yurt Farm

An awesome site. So quiet and peaceful its like being in a different world. The kids roamed free and happy, whilst we as parents had a completely relaxing time. The yurts themselves are really well equipped with pretty much everything you need for your stay and the cabin is a lovely place to relax and drink some tea. Laurie and Thea are really friendly and the perfect hosts. They make you feel like you are part of the family in thie rural idyll. Beautiful Aberaeron is a short drive away for Ice Cream, fish and chips and some lovely independent shops as well as the walk along the seafront. All in all the perfect family get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We will return as soon as we can to recharge our batteries!
