Peaceful, private pod glamping with spectacular views and amiable hosts

On the edge of the Cambrian Mountains, where the foothills fold away towards Cardigan Bay, there’s a perfectly private glamping site just for adults. Comprised of a single, cedar-clad pod and facing out across the Ystywth valley, the site – Tŷ Barcud – offers a teeny tiny slice of Wales just for two. Indeed, it’s telling that, though there is space here to build many more accommodation units – guests have two acres all to themselves – the owners have built only the one, exclusive structure. They’ve purposefully avoided spoiling the privacy and tranquillity of the place. And for that, every guest is grateful.

Set in a meadow behind the house of owners, Hugh and Barb Jones, the pod has a surprisingly modern feel. Its circular, double-glazed, glass face, peeps out from the brow of the rounded wooden structure and offers constant views of the changing landscape beyond. While the cedar cladding gives it a natural affinity with the surroundings, inside the pastel colours and rounded corners to the en-suite bathroom door reflect the 21st-century style and functionality. There’s an excellently equipped kitchen area and plenty of complimentary treats, including a welcome basket of local produce on your arrival and the likes of tea, coffee and milk.

The land around the pod lends itself to the view. In front, the ground drops away, sloping down towards the Magwr, a tributary of the River Ystywth, while the sides of the meadow are flanked by woodland and a small apple orchard. There’s a hammock outside where you can kick back and enjoy it all, as well as fire-pit for evening BBQs and marshmallow melting.

Down in the valley, hidden by hedgerows, a B-road wiggles its way towards the coast. It’s a 20-minute drive to Aberystwyth. The former county town boasts a beach, a castle and a picturesque harbour – now more of a cute little marina for sailing boats rather than a hard-working fishermans' cove. Nevertheless, it’s the spot to go for fresh seafood, from the boats that do still work there, and there’s the excellent Ceredigion Museum and a few arts venues for rainy days. Not that you need go that far. Inland, around Tŷ Barcud there’s plenty to do (see off site) while for many, simply enjoying the privacy of the pod and walks in the immediate valley surroundings will keep you occupied for days.

Both me and my husband had a wonderful time here. The best thing about it was the peace and quiet and getting away from the city. If you want a place to re-charge and get away from technology this is the place for you.

Ty Barcud Luxury Glamping Pod
The best place to unwind
Barb and Hugh were fantastic hosts. They’ve thought of everything and nothing was too much trouble, our stay was very pleasant and relaxing. The views are fantastic, only made better hanging out with the 4 friendly chickens who were great company. Aberystwyth was only a short 20 min drive, and there is plenty to do.

Ty Barcud Luxury Glamping Pod
Glamping with chickens
We loved the pod. It was very clean and cosy and very comfortable to be in. It had beautiful views and you felt so comfortable and safe. The land was really nice with friendly chickens. Everything we could ask for was there. You are left in peace and you are not far away from places to visit. We have already said we are definitely going back.

Ty Barcud Luxury Glamping Pod
Cosy pod
Visited Ty Barcud for 5 nights at the end of July. On arrival we were greeted by Barb’s. And Twm (dog). Barb’s was very friendly and escorted us to the pod. The pod was clean cosy and well equipped. There was a lovely welcome basket with essentials. The views were amazing and the pod is well placed to visit all the attractions Ceredigion has to offer. Would highly recommend Ty Barcud.

Ty Barcud Luxury Glamping Pod
Beautiful pod with outstanding view
Amazing glamping pod in the middle of the Welsh countryside. Outstanding views and complete privacy allowing you to completely switch off. Barb and Hugh could not have been more welcoming or helpful. The pod itself has all you could need, the fire pit (and marshmallows) being a firm favourite. The welcome basket was lovely as well.

From the host
Ty Barcud is a luxury cedar glamping pod set on a hilltop meadow commanding wonderful views of the Ystwyth Valley, nine miles from the seaside town of Aberystwyth. The pod is self contained with a double bed, kitchenette, wet room - everything you need for a restful break. Outside there is a patio with furniture to relax and look at the views, a fire pit and barbeque, a hammock and a two acre meadow/woodland for your enjoyment. It is an idyllic place for two people to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday living and to enjoy the many delights of beautiful Mid Wales.
Nearby attractions
Where to start? Even the nearest A-road, leading across the Cambrian Mountains to Rhayader, was once described by the AA as one of the ten most scenic drives in the world. And it's just a road. The Ystwyth Valley is even more popular with walkers, cyclists and anglers (the river Ystwyth is a favourite for trout and salmon). Hugh and Barb have plenty of maps you can borrow and are always keen to give recommendations. Particular highlights include Bwlch Nant yr Arian Red Kite Feeding Centre (0300 065 3000; feeding times are 3pm in summer and 2pm in winter) and the Hafod Estate – 200 hectares of gardens, statues, waterfalls, grottos and caves. Take a picnic, swim in the river and spend the day (entry is free). National Trust owned Llanerchaeron (01545 570200) is a similarly grand spot nearby for exploring and you can go inside the house if it rains. Devils Bridge Falls (01970 890233) is also well worth a visit. After walking to the dramatic falls, enjoy a well-deserved cup of tea and cakes at the impressive Hafod Hotel (01970 890232).
Food and drink
There's a welcome basket in the pod on your arrival containing a small loaf, butter, milk, a soft drink and welsh cakes with jams. For an additional charge they also offer breakfast baskets (the same as the welcome basket plus bacon, sausages and free range eggs), luxury baskets (all of the above plus a bottle of wine, Welsh beer and chocolate truffles) and a celebration basket (Prosecco, box of chocolates and bouquet of flowers). Head to Aberaeron harbour for the delightful Harbourmaster Hotel (01545 570 755) – or for an open fire, great ale and food go to Y Talbot (01974 298208) in rural Tregaron. There are many good places to eat in Aberystwyth, Hugh and Barb are always happy to offer recommendations.
