Peaceful, private pod glamping with spectacular views and amiable hosts
On the edge of the Cambrian Mountains, where the foothills fold away towards Cardigan Bay, there’s a perfectly private glamping site just for adults. Comprised of a single, cedar-clad pod and facing out across the Ystywth valley, the site – Tŷ Barcud – offers a teeny tiny slice of Wales just for two. Indeed, it’s telling that, though there is space here to build many more accommodation units – guests have two acres all to themselves – the owners have built only the one, exclusive structure. They’ve purposefully avoided spoiling the privacy and tranquillity of the place. And for that, every guest is grateful.
Set in a meadow behind the house of owners, Hugh and Barb Jones, the pod has a surprisingly modern feel. Its circular, double-glazed, glass face, peeps out from the brow of the rounded wooden structure and offers constant views of the changing landscape beyond. While the cedar cladding gives it a natural affinity with the surroundings, inside the pastel colours and rounded corners to the en-suite bathroom door reflect the 21st-century style and functionality. There’s an excellently equipped kitchen area and plenty of complimentary treats, including a welcome basket of local produce on your arrival and the likes of tea, coffee and milk.
The land around the pod lends itself to the view. In front, the ground drops away, sloping down towards the Magwr, a tributary of the River Ystywth, while the sides of the meadow are flanked by woodland and a small apple orchard. There’s a hammock outside where you can kick back and enjoy it all, as well as fire-pit for evening BBQs and marshmallow melting.
Down in the valley, hidden by hedgerows, a B-road wiggles its way towards the coast. It’s a 20-minute drive to Aberystwyth. The former county town boasts a beach, a castle and a picturesque harbour – now more of a cute little marina for sailing boats rather than a hard-working fishermans' cove. Nevertheless, it’s the spot to go for fresh seafood, from the boats that do still work there, and there’s the excellent Ceredigion Museum and a few arts venues for rainy days. Not that you need go that far. Inland, around Tŷ Barcud there’s plenty to do (see off site) while for many, simply enjoying the privacy of the pod and walks in the immediate valley surroundings will keep you occupied for days.

What a marvellous place. We stayed for 2 days, and it's been the best short trip we've ever made. My personal favourite was eating fish'n'chips by the firepit as the sun set over the valley after a long hike earlier in the day. We definitely plan to be back.
We were looking for somewhere peaceful for a weekend, and this was absolutely perfect. What a beautiful pod, so well equipped and comfortable. We had the best weekend, watching red kites, enjoying the view, sunshine and the fire pit. Great hosts, who were very welcoming and left us to ourselves. We wished we could stay for longer.
The area, the hospitality, and mainly the pod were all absolutely fantastic. Had such as amazing stay and will definitely return.
The perfect getaway!
We visited last weekend (May) and spent two nights in this perfect pod. We couldn’t have been happier. Barbara was very friendly and showed us around at the start and then we had two days of complete relaxation. We encountered no problems at all, the facilities were as stated on the website. The pod really does have everything you need and has been kept in such good condition. We will definitely be back!
The perfect weekend!
All I can say is wow!! I booked two nights in Ty Barcud with my partner. From the outset we were blown away by this beautiful place. We had a warm welcome from the hosts who showed us around the pod. It was the little things that made it such a marshmallows for the fire pit and a gift basket on arrival. The pod itself is cosy and we had the best sleep in a long time. The view is breathtaking! The surrounding area is also beautiful with so much to see and do. We will most definitely be back. I thoroughly recommend Ty Barcud for an off the grid weekend.
Fantastic birthday trip
What an incredible place! My partner and I stayed here for his 21st birthday for 2 nights. We had the warmest welcome by the hosts. The views there were outstanding and we were lucky enough to have dry weather. The pod provided everything and anything you will ever need. The thoughtfulness put into it was amazing! Would definitely recommend. Thank you so much :)
Great New Year trip
We had a fantastic stay here for the New Year. The views are stunning and we had a great time despite nearly constant rain! Everything we needed was provided, our hosts were very welcoming but completely respected our privacy during our stay. Lots of personal touches like some Christmas decorations really made the place feel special. Want to come back soon.
Will be returning!
Wow. What a fantastic place!! Thank you so much for a lovely weekend, just wish we could have stayed longer. Everything was ready and set out for us arriving and Barb gave us a tour and made sure we were okay with dogs and chickens. Showed us where everything was and whether we wanted the WiFi on or not which we said no to! We had a wonderful off-grid weekend, visited places recommended in the welcome book and finding places we hadn't been to before. To be able to turn off the light and see nothing but darkness meant we were able to fully unwind and had the best night's sleep in a long time. Bed was comfy, cabin was cozy and warm and we didn't have any distractions and weren't disturbed by any neighbours or chickens! The welcome basket of breakfast goodies and Welsh cakes was amazing and we had a fried breakfast both mornings we were there. Thank you so much for a truly wonderful weekend away. If anyone is looking for a place to unwind and reconnect with your partner, this is the place to go. We shall return!
When can we come back?
We have just come back from a three night stay at Ty Barcud, and we absolutely loved it! Barb & Hugh were so friendly, welcoming and accommodating of their little piece of paradise. We've been to a glamping pod before, but nothing like this - it really is luxurious, and all of your needs are catered for. (Make sure you take advantage of the welsh breakfast basket). We loved spending the evenings BBQing and sitting by the firepit (lots of wood provided & marshmallows etc!), but there is a kettle, a single induction hob, a toaster, an electric shower (i.e. hot water!) and a heater if the weather isn't so good. There is a good amount of storage under the bed and the space in the pod has really been utilised to the best advantage. We also loved the area, there are plenty of things to do, within a 20 minute drive, you can be on the beach or lost in the forest, and there is lots to see and do. Staying at the pod, with your private meadow, is a perfect way to escape the world and enjoy the local scenery. We highly recommend it, and hope to be back ourselves.
What a gem
We visited Ty Barcud at the end of June and stayed for 5 nights. It was perfect, Barn and Hugh had thought of everything to make staying there a real pleasure. The pod, the location and fabulous views over the valley would be enough to give a 5 star review, but add to that the attention to detail, the little extras that have been thought of, together with the warm and friendly welcome it is impossible to find anything negative to say. Would highly recommend.
PEACE PERFECT PEACE
AUG 11/12 2017 Sue & Dave Probably the quickest/,easiest review I've ever written.... Ty Barcud = Absolute perfection. Met at the gate by the lovely owners..Barb and Hugh, Shown "our" path, through "our" meadow to the amazing Pod with stunning views If you are going for a short break all you need to take is a towel,,food for the BBQ and beer/wine. Absolutely EVERYTHING else is provided...including the marshmallows for toasting! Totally relaxing weekend. We will definitely be booking again.
The most relaxing break we have had! Thank you.
Me and the other half were lucky enough to get to stay at Ty Barcud. Hugh and Barb are fantastic hosts, they were happy to sit and talk and give advice on the local area and places to visit, we even got to meet the new adorable puppy and his dad. The hosts showed us to the Pod and explained everything we needed to know, we could not believe how well equipped it was. The pod itself is stunning from the inside and the outside. On our first day we arrived just after midday and had planned on going out to explore the area, but it was so nice to be in the pod we stayed and relaxed outside on the patio, each with a book in hand. The pod is set in its own private meadow, the privacy fantastic, we would wake up in bed and open the doors and enjoy the view across the valley. On our second day we woke to find the chickens strolling by and shortly after a Red Kite perched on a tree our meadow. We certainly cannot recommend this hidden gem enough, we plan on making a return trip soon and I am sure you will see why after you have experienced a perfect stay at Ty Barcud!
Perfect glamping experience - thank you!
Myself and my partner are keen camping enthusiasts but we thought we'd give glamping a try. We searched and found several sites across the UK, but all had multiple pods several feet from each other with no privacy at all. We then found Ty Barcud and were so taken by the design, privacy and location of the pod, we booked it immediately for 5 nights. Having arrived at Barb and Hugh's cottage, we received a very warm welcome and our already high expectations of the pod and its surroundings were exceeded somewhat when we saw the location (a brief but lovely walk through a colorful meadow which is a haven for wildlife) and the pod itself, which has clearly been designed to a high specification with the utmost of attention to detail The view is beautiful, looking down over the hills and valley below, where you can see plenty of red kites in action. The outdoor area is really well thought out and nicely designed and the BBQ/fire-pit is great to use as the sun goes down. We were left alone to enjoy the tranquility of the pod and its surroundings, but Hugh and Barb were contactable if required and are very friendly people. The inside of the pod has clearly had a lot of thought put into it, with a very comfortable double-bed (the under-bed storage was very useful for all our bags) and equally comfortable sofa, a kitchen area with everything required and a wet-room style bathroom which I don't imagine too many pods have! To open the doors of the pod first thing in a morning and lay in bed looking out over the hills is a great experience, and you really get the feeling of isolation both in and around the pod. We genuinely could have stayed there all week without venturing out anywhere, we loved it that much and have talked about it most days since we got back! Thanks Barb and Hugh for creating such a wonderful place to stay and relax and for being so helpful and friendly, we loved every minute of our stay and it gave us the break and the relaxation that we really needed after a busy year. Thanks for also introducing us to your dogs, Jack and Tum, who gave us as warm a welcome as you did :)
We stayed in mid May for two nights. On arrival the Pod is in its own field looking down over the Valley. The field is filled with wild flowers and trees and is a haven for butterflies. The Pod is perfect in size for a couple. There is a cosy bed, compact shower (wet room) and everything you require for a stay. The kitchen has a hob and a microwave and all the pans you need. But we actually cooked every night on the fire pit which is set a little away from the Pod and has a bench to sit and look at the view or the night sky. There is a hut behind the pod with wood for the pit, firestarters, a hammock chair, games to play and hooks for your coats and boots. Plus there are walking maps and guides to the area. The area around is perfect to walk and we did a 10 mile walk that finished in the gastro pub in the next village for a drink. We bought all our food with us and there are no shops in the village. The welcome basket is a feast for your eyes as well as your tummy! Every detail has been thought of here for a luxury stay. Thank you to the hosts who are so lovely.
Lovely Short Stay
The two of us had a very pleasant 3 night stay at Ty Barcud. The pod is very well equipped, comfortable and compact, though perhaps an extra shelf for storage would have been useful. The weather when we visited in April was fairly chilly but inside the pod it was always perfectly snug and warm. We really appreciated our welcome basket which included all the basic essentials that we’d need for our short stay, plus a few extra treats! Barb and Hugh were wonderfully helpful hosts and were able to come and lend a hand when we were struggling to start up our campfire on the first night. Otherwise, we were very much left alone in our meadow, with just the birds and the occasional rabbit for visitors. I did spot the site’s name sake the red kite swooping by and circling off into the distance a few times as well. Overall, a truly peaceful, private location and a very lovely experience. Highly recommend.
Home from home
Just got back from a wonderful five day stay at Ty Barcud, as their first guests (aside from family friends). From the moment we pulled up, to the moment we left we were made to feel absolutely welcome. Hugh and Barbara were fantastic hosts, and very friendly. The pod was really comfortable, with everything we needed inside including cooking implements, cutlery, some games and DVDs for the evening. The bed was fantastically comfortable with plenty of storage underneath for our case. There is a small shed behind the pod with a fire pit and hammock swing and some outdoor games if the weather is nice enough - I loved having the fire pit there for us to use, and cooked a few evening meals with it. It was a great addition. The location was superb, overlooking rolling hills and with beautiful sunsets in the evening. The pod itself is located in the grounds around the house, but once you are in the pod you could be a million miles away from everything - it's situated a good distance away from the house that you don't feel like you're in someone's back garden and you get total privacy if that's what you're after. Hugh and Barbara were always contactable if needed and let us just get on with it if not, which is exactly what a good host should be in my books. One thing I would suggest if you are looking to stay is to buy food from Aberystwyth once you arrive rather than bringing things with you. We went a little bit overboard on the food shopping because we weren't familiar with the area so we didn't know how easy it would be to get to shops (we've been on a few canal barge excursions before where it's been difficult to do daily shopping, so we approached it with this kind of mindset, which was a mistake on our part as we just brought too much). Aberystwyth is only a short drive from the house, and anything you need you can get from there. We also opted for the breakfast package, which is an absolute must. It included some of the best sausages and bacon I've ever had, and the eggs from the chickens that live in the garden were absolutely wonderful. We made bacon, egg and sausage sandwiches with the loaf of bread that was there on our arrival, and sat in the garden to eat before heading out for the day. Absolute bliss. Overall, I would definitely recommend Ty Barcud to anybody looking for a cosy place to stay in the mid Wales area. We enjoyed it so much, and would love to go again. I'll certainly be recommending it to my friends and family as a great place to go for a short break. We really couldn't find fault with anything - it was obvious a lot of care and thought had gone into making it a lovely place to stay, and it showed.
Perfect for a peaceful getaway
We stayed here for two nights over the Christmas period: the owners being friends of our family. On arrival we were warmly welcomed by Barbara who then took us on a very short walk to the pod located in their paddock. My first observation was the view, it is spectacular:the patio area allows a perfect place to sit and observe this whilst enjoying an early morning cuppa or an evening glass of something stronger. The pod is compact but very well thought out , it has everything you could want for a stay. We didn't cook but all the equipment was there including a hob, microwave and toaster. The bed was very comfortable with plenty of under bed storage and extra layers if needed. It was an ideal location for exploring the local area: we enjoyed a few walks which were a must after visiting the local pub/restaurant for our evening meals.
As we are friends of the owners (who make fantastic hosts!) we were able to stay in the pod in August as a preview before it was officially opened. The pod is located in a very private spot not too far from Aberystwyth and handy for all the great walks in the region. The view is stunning and it's great to lie in bed and be able to see right across the valley. It’s really well fitted out and certainly had everything we needed, so all in all, a beautiful space to look out on a beautiful place.
