About Dod Mill

Suitable For

Glampers, singles, couples, families and dogs on leads – yes. Campers (unless as extra guests to glampers by prior arrangement), caravans, motorhomes – no.

You can enjoy riverside walks on site and head straight out into the Lammermuir Hills or, for more of a hike, follow the Southern Upland Way towards the coast. There are lots of castles and country houses in the surrounding Scottish Borders including 16th-century Thirlestane Castle (01578 72243), which is just four miles from site, and the magnificent Mellerstain House and Gardens (01573 410225), nine miles away. Floors Castle (01573 223333), Scotland’s largest inhabited castle, is 14 miles away and, although still home to the 11th Duke of Roxburghe, is open to the public along with its gardens. Abbotsford (01896 752043), the former home of Sir Walter Scott, is about an hour’s drive from site. There’s also the Jim Clark Motor Museum (01361 883960), alpaca trekking at Beirhope Alpacas (01573 440631) and Preston Mill – not forgetting Edinburgh with its world-famous castle and sights all within an hour’s drive of Dod Mill.

Food & Drink

Lauder is the nearest small town, four miles away, and has plenty of independent shops to pick up supplies from including The Purple Plum for fruit and veg, Shaws Fine Meats, the Firebrick Bakery and the Spotty Dog Deli, which also has a coffee shop. The Soutra Coffee House and restaurant at Carfraemill are also recommended. Main Street Trading in St Boswells (15 miles from site) is also one of your host’s favourites. For dinner out, try the local produce at Firebrick Brasserie (01578 718915), Provender (01896 820319) or the Black Bull (01578 722208). For a treat perhaps try the more upmarket, The Hoebridge (01896 823082). You can also join a brewery tour and tasting at Tempest Brewing Co (01896 759500), 16 miles away in Tweedbank, or visit Borders Distillery (01450 374330), 30 miles away.
