Luxury bell tent glamping in rural Worcestershire that's perfect for farmers, families and foodies

When Bells Farm Shop first opened in the 1950s they were seen as pioneers of this new fangled 'pick your own' thing. Nowadays it may seem old hat but, with some 40 acres of fruit and vegetables and over 200 different varieties, they remain perhaps the most diversely stocked farm shop in the country. Polytunnels packed with strawberries, manicured orchards, rows of potatoes and runner beans lined out like vineyards; it’s quite the agricultural scene. On a small hill amongst it all a small collection of bell tents have also taken root. You can also take your pick from these.

Set in a six-acre meadow, with westerly views across the Severn Valley that makes for divine sunsets, there are just six bell tents in total, with a picnic table and campfire pit beside each and masses of space beyond to roam free range. They form one of multiple glamping sites across the country, set up by Amber Wykes at a range of farms and country estates. All have similarly plush-style bell tents, with interiors that feature a real double bed, wood-burning stove and a box of cookwares that help you whip up a storm with your freshly picked vegetables. You can also pre-order food hampers from the farm shop ready for your arrival.

When it comes to scrubbing up, brand new, purpose-built bathrooms have been built in a wooden building on the field, with a washing up station outside. There’s an honesty shop and wood store, so you can keep you marshmallows toasting whatever the time of the day, while, in the tents, you’ll also find educational packs for farm enthusiasts who want to know a bit more about what is grown nearby and the nature that supports it (tours are also available on request).

Down by the shop, there are pedal go karts and miniature tractors for the kids but for something more realistic (and with better scenery) it’s a 15 minute drive to the village of Bewdley where steam trains puff their way along the Severn Valley line to Kidderminster or Bridgnorth. First opened in 1862, the line is a relic of the region’s great industrial heritage and makes just one of many historical sights in the area: The ruined Italianate mansion of Witely Court, National Trust-owned Hanbury Hall and moated Harvington Hall are all within a 20-minute drive, while it’s less than half an hour into the centre of Worcester. Vast Wyre Forest, meanwhile, is a mere 15 minutes by car, with endless family trails on which to stretch little legs.

Return to camp via the award-winning butcher’s in the farm shop and rekindle the campfire. Each pit has a grill you can use to turn your campfire into a proper flame-grilling barbecue and there’s plenty of free range produce you can use to build the ultimate outdoor feast. With a Worcester Oldfields cider in hand (and Bells’ own apple juice for the kids), you’ll feel like a true local.

Suitable For

Glamping only. Dogs not permitted. Large groups, corporate hire, birthday celebrations and (chilled out) stag and hen gatherings available by prior arrangement.

Bring your bikes and head west into Wyre Forest National Nature Reserve, one of the largest, semi-natural woodlands in the UK and home to family-friendly hiking and cycling trails, or get really in amongst the trees at Wyre Forest's Go Ape! (01603 895500) where you can walk rope bridges and zip-line between the branches. It's 6 miles to Harvington Hall (01562 777846), a moated medieval and Elizabethan manor house that runs 'living history' days during the school holidays, with actors in period dress and family activities. The National Trust's Hanbury Hall and Gardens (01527 821214) is also 25 minutes away, while ruined Witley Court and Gardens is 20 minutes. Worcester is great for heritage too – home to a magnificent cathedral and the Royal Worcester Museum (01905 21247), to name but two – or hop on a vintage steam train from nearby Bewdley, following the Severn Valley railway line (you can also hike back along the Severn Valley Country Park route). While you're there, Bewdley is also a good place for hiring canoes and taking guided canoe trips on the River Severn. Animal lovers should also consider West Midlands Safari Park (01299 402114; 6 miles) and the Little Owl Farm Park (01905 620325; 3 miles).

Food & Drink

How many farm shops can lay claim to some 200 different varieties of fruit and vegetables you can pilfer? Pluck your own fresh strawberries from the earth to go with your campfire pancakes and grill freshly picked sweetcorn over the coals of your BBQ. Just take your pick, then head into Bells Farm Shop (01299 251364) to pay afterwards. If you're too lazy to pick your own, you can just go straight to the shop and get the pre-picked stuff, along with jams, chutneys and other local goods (including a butchers and a wide range of drinks from local breweries). For a meal out, there are no fewer than 15 different pubs in Stourport-on-Severn, 2½ miles down the road.

Social Distancing Measures

We really want to welcome you to Bell's Farm this year, and we take yours, and our safety extremely seriously. We are really lucky at Bell's Farm as we have a lot of space on the glamping field, which is in itself a good 4 acres, and is surrounded by orchards.    We will space the 6 tents out so they have at least 10m between.  We will be providing hand sanitising solutions within and outside of the bathrooms.  We have 3 loos and 3 showers for 6 tents each as separate units.   The tents will have a deep clean with certified sprays after each guest and left to air after check out.   I hope this helps relieve any anxieties about coming to glamp with us.

Getting There

Bells Farm is located on the south side of the A4025, ¾-mile from the roundabout on the A449 or, if you're coming from the other direction, it's 1½ miles after leaving the town of Stourport-on-Severn. It's well sign posted when you get there, with a big white sign that says Bells Farm Shop.

The nearest train station is in Hartlebury 2¼ miles away but for any long journeys the train from there will take you straight to Kidderminster (6 miles) where you'll have to change, so, for the sake of speed, you may be best off just going straight there. There aren't any frequent buses to the glamping site.

Great experience

This was our first time doing any form of camping. We really had a great time and would highly recommend. The tents were well looked after and there was plenty of extras that we were not expecting.

Comfortable, cosy and a very kind welcome.

Lovely open field with tents spaced far apart, great farm shop selling a wide range of things, and a very friendly welcome. Saw Roe deer on the site, close to our tent. Everything was very well thought through and the toilets and showers absolutely spotless. Thank you for having us!

A fantastic family getaway

We had a wonderful 5 days away with our 2 outdoorsy boys at Amber's Bell tent. The tent was very spacious and well equipped. The added extras such as the hot chocolate and marshmallows went down a treat with the kids. There is lots of open space for the kids to play, run and explore. The toilets and showers are spacious, easily accessible and very clean. Overall we had a lovely 5 days away and I would highly recommend Amber's Bell tents.

A fantastic family getaway

Brilliantly well equipped and spacious tents in a wonderful location next to a pick your own fruit farm and farm shop. We received a wonderful welcome and the little added extras like marshmallows and hot chocolate went down a treat the the kids. Lots of space on site for the kids to run, play and explore. The toilets and showers were modern and comfortable and immaculately clean. If you get the opportunity try the pizza oven what a fantastic experience. I would definitely recommend Amber's Bell tents. Thank you for a great week.

Perfect stay

We met here as two families travelling from Cheshire and Buckinghamshire as a good mid location. We were really happy to find a fun little dog show with live music and some games and stalls to keep the kids entertained before we checked into our bell tent. Our tents exceeded our expectation, prestine and very comfortable. Everything supplied to make our stay easy. Welcome hamper with delicious supplies from the fabulous farm shop (the Best plums and strawberries ever tasted!). The toilets and showers were spotless and there were games available for the kids to use. The owner was very friendly and helpful. We will definitely return to this site again and highly recommend to others.

Lovely glamping weekend

Three families stayed for a June weekend in three gorgeous Bell tents. The tents had everything you need and we're spotless. There was plenty of warm duvets and blankets plus hot water bottles but the weather was kind and we didn't need more. The site has good toilets and warm showers and a nice wash up area. The best thing was the big field for the kids to play. Plenty of games and stuff available to borrow. They loved the wheelbarrow. The tents had lots of nice touches and a retro 50s camping feel. Saturday morning, we all trundled down to the next field and picked our weight in strawberries. The owners were very helpful and asked for our feed back as it's a new venture for them. Had a lovely time, would recommend, especially as the double bed was very comfy. Kids on camp beds but they were too tired to care, which is the best way!
