Family-sized bell tents on a country estate with a farm park in the heart of Warwickshire

Campfires, canvas and a country estate in heart of the rolling hills of the Warwickshire countryside — Umberslade Farm is a jewel waiting to be discovered! Though of course, what’s on offer here isn’t just camping — it’s Glamping, so there’s no need to pitch a tent. At Umberslade Glamping, everything is set up for you, with ten furnished bell tents spread across two meadows within a 50-acre estate.

Once the country dwelling of a 19th-century Birmingham industrialist, Umberslade has been passed down the generations into the capable hands of younger members of the Muntz family who are just as enterprising as their forefathers. The big house was sold decades ago and the land is now home to a number of different ventures including the Glamping site and family fun music and art weekends. And while there’s a lot going on (a coffee shop, a pizza restaurant, a farm park, adventure playgrounds and more) the family is as committed to protecting their land for future generations as they are to sharing it. As such, the low-impact bell tent Glamping fits in perfectly well.

There are two tiers of bell tent camping at Umberslade. There are the beautiful five-metre bell tents of the lower meadow where tents are furnished with a boho vibe thanks to comfy memory foam mattresses covered in colour throws, rag rugs, scatter cushions, a low table, lamps, solar fairy lights and bunting. Each bell tent has a fire bowl, wood and kindling supplied free of charge.

Then there are the slightly more spacious bell tents of the upper meadow. Here, there are just three six-metre tents with a similar aesthetic to their neighbours but a couple of important differences; the main one being individual facilities and a comfy double bed. There’s a flushing toilet, shower and a washing-up area just outside each tent. Again, each bell tent comes with its own Fire bowl, kindling and logs for free.

For many glampers, the convenience will be worth the extra cost while others will prefer the better value option of a closer-to-camping stay in the lower meadow where facilities are shared (but still immaculate) and a short walk away.

Talking of short walks, there’s a lot within ambling distance of these bell tents, which is one of the things that gives the place its appeal. You can stroll on public footpaths through miles of farmland and woodland, visit the on-site espresso coffee shop, and tuck into our homemade food and cakes, eat the best pizzas at our brand new pizza barn serving pizza, draught beers and a fantastic selection of wines, join a family-friendly pony trek, or book in for a forest school session at Umberslade Adventure. It’s also just a short walk to Tanworth in Arden village centre, a pretty little place with a nice pub and a church. There’s really no need to venture further afield but, should you want to, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick Castle and Kenilworth Castle offer a variety of days out all within a half-hour drive.

The site's three six-metre bell tents each have their own rustic but hot shower and a flushing toilet while the five-metre bell tents in the lower meadow share four portaloos in the field. Both also have access to a very well-kept facilities block by the farm (about 200 metres from the lower meadow). Shared with the estate's campsite (in a separate location), there are 20 toilets, two showers and eight washing-up sinks. The six-metre tents have a comfy double bed and four single memory foam camping mattresses and are equipped with a hamper of cutlery and kitchen utensils, battery lamps, scatter cushions, rugs, mirror, solar fairy lights and bunting. Outside, each tent has its own seating area with sun-shade and camping gas cooker. The five-metre bell tents are similarly furnished but have six single mattresses and do not have a gas stove or cooking kit. Campfires are allowed and a fire bowl and a starter kit of wood/kindling and firelighters is supplied with all bell tents free of charge. More log is for sale at the farm.

Suitable For

Glampers, couples, families, groups — yes. Campers, campervans, motorhomes, caravans, dogs — no.

Bell tent campers are welcome to go and say hello to the chickens, ducks, pigs and ponies who live on the farm and can also join a pony ride or farm adventure (for an extra cost). There's a children's play area and an indoor play barn too for little ones (also extra cost). Families with older kids might prefer to book in at Umberslade Adventure (07761 025651) for archery, den building, woodland activities and nature trails through the trees, three miles down the road but still within the estate. There are some lovely walks on signposted public footpaths within the estate which take you on either a two-mile or four-mile route through woods and farmland and it's less than a mile along a beautiful tree-lined avenue to the quaint village of Tanworth-in-Arden where you can visit the old church and pop in for a pint at The Bell (see below). Stratford Upon Avon, a bustling medieval market town well known as the home of Shakespeare, is 13 miles away with The Royal Shakespeare Theatre (01789 331111) and Anne Hathaway's Cottage (01789 204016) among the things to see. With Warwick Castle and Kenilworth Castle (01926 852078) are a similar distance away.

Food & Drink

There's a lovely coffee shop, Espresso Farm, on-site just 200 metres away and, during the summer months, Dough and Flow operates an outdoor pop-up pizza restaurant on-site at weekends. The Bell pub (01564 742212), which serves food, is a pleasant walk less than a mile away in the village. For fresh milk from within the Umberslade Estate, head for the vending machine at Teds Shed, three miles away, which offers a vending machine for fresh milk and dairy products. There's a recommended bakery and cafe, Wedges, also about three miles from the farm which sells fresh bread, cakes, fruit, veg and hot and cold food. The closest supermarket is a Co-op in Hockley Heath approximately four miles away. The town also has a range of independent shops including a baker and butcher and there's a recommended fish and chip shop, Nelsons (01564 785784) along with a Miller and Carter Steakhouse (01564 784137).
