A romantic shepherds hut retreat at the foot of the Shropshire Hills

It's amazing how much thought can go into a single shepherd's hut. The Hopton Hut is a good example. Lovingly built from scratch by husband and wife duo Clare and Setfan, it occupies a prized patch of land on the edge of the Shropshire Hills in the twee village of Hopton Wafers. Clare is an experienced glamping host, while Stefan is a carpenter by trade and crafted the shepherds hut with glampers in mind, positioning it to make the most of the surrounding vistas. The result is an ideal bolthole for sweet romantics looking to lollygag their way up Clee Hill and through Wyre Forest, with the added bonus of being a 20-minute drive from foodie town of Ludlow.

Located at the wooded edge of the Hopton Court Estate, the hut's bifolding doors open straight into nature, with views of a green valley side flanked by wildflowers and occasionally visited by passing sheep and pheasants. Birds are a bit of theme at this glamping site and, if you’re partial to an egg at breakfast, ask Clare for fresh eggs from her laying hens. She has over 20 chooks, some of them rescues. You can also expect to hear a cockerel crowing and other, wilder birds, like woodpeckers and blue tits, from your bed.

While the hut has been constructed to maximise the panorama across the valley, it’s also raised with a deck at the front, so you can take in the sunsets around a hand-cast firepit and BBQ. Inside, the bed has been positioned to make the most of the landscape, too, and includes carefully thought out storage so you can pack your luggage away and keep mess to a minimum. After a hard day of rambling in the nearby Shropshire Hills, there’s the welcoming site of an en-suite shower before you take a slow stroll to the local gastropub, The Hopton Crown, for fancy cuisine in tartan and tweed surroundings.

The tiny unassuming village of Hopton Wafers has an undercurrent of fun, with a programme of events at the Hopton Court Estate that include the Beardie Folk Festival, the One Tribe dance music event and Orbit fitness festival. This area is also a favourite for cross country running and hiking – try a swift three-and-a-half-mile trek up Clee Hill or flatter terrain at Catherton Common. If you’re driving, Ludlow is 20 minutes away by car, where you’ll find a host of good pubs and Michelin-Guide-recommended restaurants, like Mortimers or The French Pantry. The town's also famous for its 15th-century castle, surrounded by a band of independent shops, boutiques and places to sip cappuccinos while you relax into the holiday pace of life and watch the world unfold.

Hopton Shepherds Hut has a double bed (all bedding and linen included), a kitchen with a sink, kettle, toaster, microwave, electric two ring hob and a small fridge. There’s a hot shower, a flushing toilet and an electric heater. On the decking there are patio chairs and a table, a BBQ fire pit and extra blankets for warmth. Fuel for the fire can be ordered in advance.

The bathroom is fitted with wall boards and Altro safety flooring and has a shower, toilet and sink vanity unit and mirror cupboard.  The kitchen was made to order and has a Belfast sink, wine storage, a double electric hob, kettle, toaster and small fridge. The Shepherds Hut is located at the bottom our our garden which is 1.5 acres and gives you privacy but we are on hand during your stay to help with your check-in, luggage and any queries you may have.
