About Severn Valley View Shepherds Hut

Nearby

Severn Valley View is within walking distance of the Dudmaston Estate (01746 780866), a National Trust-owned estate with a 17th-century country house, wooded parkland and sweeping gardens. Never sold and owned by the same family for over 875 years, Dudmaston has a fantastic story of lineage as well as being a place of radical thinking and industry, including the introduction of once innovative woodland management skills. It's also simply a great spot for a picnic. If you're down by the river and like your walking then you can follow much of the river banks on foot. It's around 3½ miles from the estate to Bridgnorth, which has plenty to keep anybody busy, while Ironbridge is a 30-minute drive north. The vast cast-iron construction that gives Ironbridge town its name has been wowing visitors since 1779. There are no fewer than 10 museums within the gorge, including a recreated Victorian town at Blists Hill, and the free Ironbridge World Heritage Festival takes place every September.

Food & Drink

It's around a ½-mile walk to the nearest pub – The Whitehouse in Quatford – though you're better off walking a tad further to The Danery (01746 762255), which has good food, local ales and a very pleasant beer garden in summer. For the widest choice head into Bridgnorth itself, where there's a collection of decent gastro pubs, including the flower-clad Old Castle (01746 711420), the ancient King's Head (01746 762141), which is all low beams and tiny doors, and The Boatyard (01746 218030), set on the banks of the River Severn and the place to go in summer.

Getting There

The (fairly hidden) entrance to the woods is on Chapel Lane, which comes off the A442 about 1½ miles south of Bridgnorth just before you arrive into the village of Quatford. The turning is signposted "Quatford Wood" and there is a red phone box. Go up this narrow road for ½ mile and the gate into the woods is on your left, directly opposite a T-junction (Sandymouth Lane). Precise directions and access details are also provided upon booking.

The nearest train stations are in Kidderminster (12 miles) or Wolverhampton (14 miles), both of which have bus services to Bridgnorth.
