A small, private, family glamping site in a wild little dell 10 minutes from Ross on Wye

After a year of restrictions that forced everyone to stay at home, Ed and Aldona, the owners of Ryeford Ponds, began to see how lucky they were to call their corner of the country their own. Set among orchards and arable fields, and host to a trio of small ponds, their farm in the Wye Valley is not only wonderfully green and secluded but its also close to what counts as 'action' in this sleepy part of the world. It's 10 minutes from canoeing and swimming in the River Wye, 20 from the Forest of Dean and local footpaths lead of to enchanting trails in Penyard Park Woods.

There are just a couple of bell tents in this private glamping meadow, conveniently close to the A40 but found a quarter of a mile down a farm track and then hidden in a natural dip in the landscape, so you're still well away from the outer world. Though you’ll be one of the only glampers onsite that doesn’t mean you won’t be surrounded by other guests. Dragonflies make their homes around the ponds, a short stroll from your bell tent, and though resident owls would rather be heard than seen you're still likely to spot squirrels, mallards and deer. Children in particular will love the wild nature of the site, hunting for frogs, hiding in the long grass that slopes up behind the bell tents or running amongst the willow trees – there's some six acres in total to explore.

Given the slopes and nooks of the landscape, the bell tents are raised on flat wooden decks, while, inside, they feature proper beds, rugs and matting. Campfires are allowed in pits dug into the ground – campfire cooking is encouraged and grills are provided – and there's also a communal kitchen area guests can use. For a real treat the site is special if you come with friends, booking the bell tents together and enjoying the whole place all to yourselves.

Down in the dell of the glamping meadow its easy to almost forget about the outside world. Ed and Aldona’s favourite trail crosses nearby Pontshill Marsh, follows and lane and then leads to the scenic circular walk around Penyard Park. By car, meanwhile, it takes less than 10 minutes to drive to the renowned Wye Valley town of Ross-on-Wye, where there are shops and pubs and independent cafés but also an outpost of The River Wye Canoe Hire company, who can get you set up with a canoe for the day and drop you upstream so that you need only drift back to town in the sun.

Nearby

Ryeford Ponds is a 15-minute drive from Pedal A Bike Away (01594 729000) cycle centre, where you can hire bikes for the whole family and take full advantage of all the cycle routes that the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley have to offer. If you prefer to explore on foot, there are lots of great spots for gentle walks and picnics in the area, Cannop Ponds and Beechenhurst are both a little over a 15-minute drive away. Both have great views but Beechenhurst has the additional perk of a large playground and nice café. The Norman medieval castle, Goodrich Castle (0370 333 1181), is also 15 minutes away if you fancy taking in more of the area’s history. As well as being one of the best preserved medieval castles in England, Goodrich also offers dramatic views across the Wye, where you might spot fisherman below or people paddling in canoes. You can hire your own vessel in nearby Ross-on-Wye with Ross-on-Wye Canoe Hire (01600 890470). It's easy and you needn't paddle too hard, since you only need to go downstream and they'll arrange collection at the other end.

Food & Drink

Ross on Wye (10 minutes in the car) is the place to go for most things, with supermarkets and decent restaurants mostly set up and back from the River Wye but with a pub and café down closer to the riverside. Caffe Eleganza (01989 764254) is great for coffee, savory dishes and sweet treats like homemade cakes, milkshakes and smoothies, while Truffles Deli (01989 762336) has good paninis and tailormade salads – the outdoor courtyard is nicely tucked away from the High Street noise. Also on the High Street, try the lovely local Italian, Avellino (01989 769222).

The Owner Says

A humble welcome to Ryeford Ponds – a small-scale, pop-up glamping site in Herefordshire. Your private, secluded, rural retreat awaits. Two spacious and  fully equipped bell tents  and a small shepherd hut anticipate your arrival. Addition of a  private toilet/shower facility will surely make your stay comfortable.  Ryeford Ponds is ready when you are!

The tents are sited amongst meadows, ponds and woodland, in quiet a 6-acre paddock on our  family owned farm just outside the market town of Ross-On-Wye. It’s ‘nearly-wild camping’ with extra comforts! Set in a peaceful, off-grid and exclusively private location with dark skies at night, with no crowds and ample grounds to roam freely where you can enjoy long summer days. Here, you are encouraged to put your feet up and embrace the moment. Enjoy the freedom and space, sit by the campfire, relax in a hammock or reconnect with nature. Listen to the buzzards above you, spot the woodpecker, or perhaps catch a glimpse of Canada geese landing on one of the ponds.  If you are eager to explore local offerings, the beautiful Wye Valley and Forest of Dean are just minutes away - you are in rural Herefordshire, with plenty to see and experience! Pick some local activities - cycling, canoeing, paddleboarding, walking, … visit a castle, pop out to explore some unique shops in nearby Ross or immerse yourself in a book, sipping locally roasted coffee in a sunny spot by your tent and let the day go by.  You can be as active or as idle as you desire - the choice is yours!

‘Stay @ Ryeford Ponds’ evolved as an add-on project to our usual activity – arable farming. Our core operations include growing potatoes, oil seed rape, barley, wheat and grass seed. We were fortunate enough to find ourselves 'stranded' in this stunning part of the world during the Summer of 2020 and various lockdowns. With limited travel options but huge passion for nature, all things outdoors, good food and great company, an idea of a simple yet comfortable hideout was born and many evenings were spent by the campfire dreaming of 'what it might be like… With its off grid set up, sensible approach to 'creature comforts’, low impact on ecosystems and local habitats ... here it is!

We'd love to share our home patch with you and hope you enjoy your stay.  Ed & Aldona

Social Distancing Measures

For your comfort, peace of mind and as a safety measure we have created a private toilet/shower for each family. This investment, additional cleaning regime and limiting shared areas will no doubt minimise the risk of spreading potential infections.  The only shared, communal space is our cute, outdoor (and sheltered) kitchenette which is well ventilated and where you have access to hand-washing facilities and hand sanitiser for your convenience.

In case of covid-19 restrictions being escalated we have a plan ‘B’ and are able to create additional, completely private kitchen area to further minimise guests “mingling” and can arrange for no-contact check in and check out.  We reserve the right to review and improve this policy in the interest of both our guests and staff should the need arise.

Peaceful and beautiful

We had a brilliant couple of days at Ryeford Ponds - it is such a beautiful spot and ideally placed for exploring the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean. Both the bell tent and kitchen are really well equipped and we needed nothing but clothes and food! All facilities were beautifully clean and the site is wonderfully peaceful - plenty of wildlife and nature to encounter. I only wish we had a longer booking - two nights wasn’t long enough! We’ll be back.

Response from Ryeford Ponds

Aaahhh, thank you so much Ling. 😍
We are so happy you had a great weekend. It's super important to us everyone has the best adventures :)  we love looking after our guests!
We also prioritise privacy at our site, hence location of the tents ... Distant but not too far away if you are staying as a group of friends.  The private bathroom per tent is an added bonus too.

We loved seeing the children running about, playing games and looking for frogs and slugs :) while you were cooking and chilling! Priceless.

Glad you had a good break - we are looking forward to welcoming you again one day. Thanks again for your feedback.
