An exclusive shepherd's hut, kitted out for couples with cooking and ensuite facilities, luxurious sauna – plus easy access to the Forest of Dean

Peace, privacy and a slice of countryside living are common descriptions when marketing a new glampsite. But at certain locations, these are far more than just advertising buzzwords. Upper House Glamping is one such a place, where tranquility and relaxation is guaranteed by one simple fact: there's only one single shepherd's hut, ensuring guests have a private holiday experience amongst Herefordshire's rolling agricultural landscapes.

Traditionally styled in forest green, the exclusive hut - hiding in a field behind a characterful oak-frame cottage - seems to blend into the rural backdrop, but within, the luxurious interior offers something more than its rustic facade suggests. Homely uplit wooden walls suit the scene perfectly and house excellent facilities like a Divan double bed, kitchenette, cosy woodburner, and ensuite with hot and cold running water, shower, flushing loo and thoughtfully supplied with bottles of toiletries. Step outside, meanwhile, and the jewel in the luxury lovers crown awaits: a luxurious Zoki sauna, only yards from the hut – perfect for relaxing after days spent exploring.

Though the mod-cons and exclusive feel of being the sole occupants of the meadow (minus the sheep) is undoubtedly what makes Upper House Glamping special, the location is also difficult to knock. Sandwiched between the Forest of Dean and the Malvern Hills, the site is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The former is the oldest oak forest in England and a scenic spot for mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking. Whilst, the Malverns is first-rate walking country, with a network of hiking trails, most of which can be completed in a half-day. Great Malvern is the obvious choice for first-time visitors, and on a clear day, walkers who reach the summit are rewarded with views of 15 counties. Closer to home, there are walks from the hut door, with the Herefordshire trail only a field away, and Ledbury - with its antique shops and delightful medieval Market House - just 1.5 miles down a lovely lane.

Naturally, there are some holidaymakers for whom Upper House Glamping simply won’t suit. Groups, dog owners, and children are all out of luck. But for couples especially, the site offers a wonderfully romantic getaway, with private countryside views, plenty of kit and caboodle to keep you warm and comfortable, and best yet, some good old-fashioned peace and quiet. In fact, at night, the only sound you're likely to hear is an owl in the nearby woods.

The hut features a new luxury Divan double bed (all bedding provided), cooker, fridge and sink with hot and cold water. There's an ensuite electric shower, with basin and flushing loo within the hut (Mason & Miller complimentary toiletries pack included), woodburner, fibre broadband speed WiFi, and 240v mains electric sockets with USB ports for charging devices. Outside BBQ and fire pit, bike store, wildlife pond adjacent, Lafuma lounger chairs and table tennis available, plus a luxurious Zoki sauna only 20 yards from the hut with an outdoor solar shower.

Suitable For

The hut is suitable for 2 adults only. Sorry, no dogs as there are sheep outside.

There are some nice walks and cycle routes straight from the hut, but if you fancy something a little more energetic, the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley offers some of the best walks and mountain bike trails in the UK. Canoeing, archery, climbing, horse riding, caving, and fishing are also on offer. To the east, the Malvern Hills, divides Worcestershire and Herefordshire, and is a great destination for walkers of all ages and abilities, whether you are interested in a gentle stroll along tree-lined paths or a trek along the Malvern Hills ridge. The local area boasts a wealth of historic sights, including three magnificent castles (Berkeley, Eastnor, and Goodrich), whilst there's plenty of quaint villages and towns to while away a few hours. Finally, family-run Alexander Park Resort offers relaxing spa treatments, golf course and a gym, all nestled within mature meadows.

Food & Drink

Inside the hut there’s a fridge, 2-ring gas hob, kettle, various pans, cutlery, plates, bowls and mugs – so everything you need to cook a decent meal. You will also find a sink with hot and cold water for washing up. Alternatively, bike or walk to the lovely market town of Ledbury, which is renowned for its cafes, pubs, and restaurants.

Late March–November.

The Owner Says

Have you ever fancied a luxury Glamping break in a shepherds hut. Our brand new hut ticks all the boxes. It's fully connected to mains electrics and water and even has a flushing loo, yet it's in a field location so you feel off grid but you're not!

Bring your bikes (bike store available) and after a days biking or hiking enjoy a relaxing sauna in your own Zoki sauna adjacent to the hut. After the sauna, pick up your favourite book and indulge in a chapter or two before supper.

Crack open a chilled beer from the fridge within the hut and fire up the barbecue whilst enjoying the 270 degree panorama and watch the sun go down before snuggling up in the luxury cosy double bed for the night.

If the weather is cooler, light the wood burner within the hut and Cook something wonderful on the gas hob, or repair to one of the many pubs and restaurants nearby.

In the morning, wake up to the sun beaming through your bedroom window and the bucolic serenity of the sheep in the field outside. Go and collect some free range eggs for your breakfast from the hens outside the hut.

The hut is available for short breaks (Min 2 nights) for 2 people (no pets). We can offer this as standalone rental or as an add on to our holiday cottage (6+2). So why not invite a couple of friends to join you on holiday during your stay at the cottage?

Social Distancing Measures

There are no shared facilities on site. We only have one glamping unit (shepherds hut) on site. We deep clean between guests and leave ventilation gaps between guests. We wear masks to welcome you. The toilet/ bathroom facility is within the hut itself so guests have exclusive use during their stay.
You are unlikely to meet anyone else on site, so one way systems etc are not applicable.
We are as keen as you are to ensure safety, since we are doing the changeover!!

Enjoy your stay....

Couldn't have been better

Wonderful stay at Upper House. The Shepherds Hut feels spacious and has everything you might need as well as the comfiest bed we have ever slept in. Ledbury is very pretty and handy for shopping/ cafes/ takeaways. Jim was friendly and helpful and made the great recommendation of canoeing down the river Wye. Plenty to do and see in the area, will be back.

super cosy and fun

The wagon itself is super cosy and fun and it’s a short drive from some nice spots: Ledbury is a pretty Tudor town and the Malvern hills are good for walking. Jim’s very friendly and helpful and the breakfast is a nice touch! There is a slight traffic sound from the nearby A-road but the views are pretty and overall it’s a nice spot for a weekend break.😀

Perfect cosy getaway for two

Having to use holiday up at the end of April but knowing the weather may be bad as well as a pandemic still ongoing, we felt this place was perfect to escape for a few days. With no insulation, the mornings were chilly but the blankets on the bed were more than enough and the wood burning stove kept us warm every evening. Jim made us feel very welcome and had us all set up with breakfast for the few days we were there. The views were spectacular and the setting was exactly the calm environment we needed. Don’t bring a lot of stuff as the hut is small. Town is a fairly close drive and we had excellent takeaway pizza (enjoyed at the hut) from Slip Tavern. Malvern Hills is a quick and easy journey to get gorgeous views of the countryside. I would highly recommend this place for a couples getaway.

Fabulous stay!

Absolutely loved our stay in the Shepherds hut. It was such a relaxing peaceful getaway. The hut has everything you need. Very comfortable bed and cosy duvet. The views are wonderful. Jim very accommodating and his homemade bread and marmalade delicious. As were the bacon and fresh eggs. Very pleasant walk into Ledbury which is a very picturesque town. We will definitely return. Thank you Jim.

Just wonderful

The hut is a fabulous little getaway. Beautiful views, lovely welcome basket of goodies, amazing peace and quiet for much-needed R&R. The only downside is that Ledbury is much further away than the 1.5 miles suggested and not really easily walkable (it takes 45 minutes). That aside, we will come again!

Perfect retreat

Beautifully and thoughtfully done out, gorgeous scenery and loads of really great welcoming touches. Communication was great and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It really does have everything you need! Can’t wait to go again when it’s sunny and make the most of the BBQ area. Thanks so much Jim x
