A quaint wooden cabin and a shepherd's hut, tucked away on a Herefordshire farm - with a heated swimming pool.

Private planes and heated swimming pools are more often associated with high-end luxury villas than rustic glamping cabins but Broadmeadow Glamping has managed to combine the lot. This glamping site in Herefordshire sits alongside the local flying club’s grassy airstrip so while you may not get to take to the skies, you’ll have a great view while they do. And when it comes to the pool, you can dive right in; we weren’t teasing you there. Glamping guests are able to book private sessions in the afternoons and, as there’s just one off-grid cabin and one shepherd’s hut, you won’t be short on splashing about time.

Situated just three miles outside of the county town, Broadmeadow Farm feels surprisingly distant from Hereford, surrounded as it is by open fields dotted with sheep as far as the eye can see. Yet the wooden walls of its Billy Goat Cabin are almost an ode to the Jacobean buildings that pepper the heart of the town centre. Like a strange hybrid between a beach hut, Scandinavian lodge and Hereford’s timbered Old House, the cabin is a wooden wonder. At the other end of the site’s small woodland, a little shepherd’s hut is completely different but shares a charmingly timeless feel.

Each is off grid but insulated for year-round use and has its own composting toilet outside. The shepherd’s hut is a dinky hideaway for two or three while The Billy Goat Cabin has a family feel. There’s a mezzanine bedroom above the main space (with a sofa bed) which is warmed by a wood-burning stove and, outside, there’s a couple of cute extra cabins kitted out as twin bedrooms. They’re perfect for older kids or friends to sleep in while sharing facilities. Both cabin and shepherd’s hut are stocked up with cooking kit and have a fire bowl and picnic space outside.

The real treat, of course, is that warm swimming pool, a short walk away in a beamed building by your host’s farmhouse. It’s the perfect place to spend the gap between returning from the day’s adventures and your nightly campfire or barbecue. And the adventures here are plentiful: there’s the Forest of Dean, Hay-on-Wye or nearby Hereford with its mighty cathedral. It’s there that you’ll find the famous Mappa Mundi, a 13th-century map of the world with all its centuries-old eccentricities. While it’s rather different from the way we see the planet today – sprawling open spaces with just a few, sparse settlements plotted on the old parchment – there's a pleasing symmetry with the peaceful world of Broadmeadow Glamping; a rural escape on the modern-day map.

Nearby

On site, the local flying club provides entertainment as they take off from the grassy airstrip close by (in good weather between 8am and 8pm only) and the swimming pool is open to glamping guests from 2.30pm each day. The little woodland, with dens and a viewing platform, is a bit of a natural playground for kids too. The site is close enough to Hereford that you could walk into the town centre – it takes just under an hour to reach the cathedral from your cabin (around three miles). The cathedral (01432 374200) itself is worth a visit – examine the Mappa Mundi and The Chained Library – and over the road there is a museum and art gallery (01432 260692), plus Hereford's famous Black and White Village with a trail taking in the best houses, including the famous Old House (01432 260694). In the opposite direction, it's a short drive to Snell's Fruit Farm (01989 730229) on Windmill Hill. They grow delicious strawberries and host Pick-Your-Own during summer. Further afield the market towns of Abergavenny, Monmouth, Ledbury, Ross-on-Wye and Hay-on-Wye will keep you busy or head south to the Forest of Dean for more rural adventures - such as canoeing, Go Ape, cycle tracks, bike hire, steam railways and ancient woodland. Oakerwood Leisure (01568 780111) is situated north of the county and offers a wide range of outdoor activities such as paintballing, quad biking and high ropes.  Walks such as Garway Hill, The Skirrid, The Sugar Loaf, The Black Mountains, Hay Bluff, The Golden Valley and Llanthony Priory are all nearby options for a day out walking.

Food & Drink

It's a couple of miles to The Grafton (01432 355233), which is the closest pub for food, and a couple more to The Black Swan (01981 540295) in Much Dewchurch. The Harewood End Inn at Harewood End, The Axe and Cleaver at Much Birch, The Pilgrim Hotel Restaurrant, The Kilpeck at Kilpeck and The Tump at Wormelow are also recommended for nearby pub food.  For something really fancy, though, try the upmarket restaurants The Hardwick (01873 854220) and The Walnut Tree (01873 852797; book well in advance). Oakchurch (01981 500125) is the place to go for locally-produced meats, cheeses, wines, fruit, vegetables and, of course, cider, for which Herefordshire is famous. There's even a cider museum (01432 354207) in town, along with Weston's Cider Distillery (01531 660233).  For more local recommendations to meet your specific interests please ask Adrian and Sally.

The Owner Says

The Billy Goat Cabin is the name given to our unique hand-crafted Cabin (Adrian designed and built the Cabin himself in 2016) and it offers a cosy retreat with beautiful views.  The Cabin is one of two accommodation sites at the farm - the other being our handmade Shepherd's Hut - built by Adrian during Lockdown in 2021 - which is located the other end of our small woodland (300 yards away from the Cabin).  The site itself feels private and peaceful except for the times the microlights are taking to the sky which can provide its own entertainment! Our stunning natural backdrop is the perfect place to be at one with the outdoors. We have an indoor heated swimming pool which proves to be extremely popular with our guests.  The pool is timetabled so that our Waterbabies clients and our Glamping guests can all enjoy swimming.  We have recently taken great joy in providing a meeting point for close friends to reunite, a venue for a romantic marriage proposal as the sun set behind Hay Bluff and many opportunities for families to relax together whilst collecting sticks in the woods, toasting marshmallows in the fire pit and spending hours playing in the pool.  Some of our guests spend hours chatting, cooking, swimming and happily catching up and relaxing whilst not leaving the farm and others spend long days having outdoor adventures in the Forest of Dean, Symonds Yat and the Black Mountains.  However you choose to spend your time here we are looking forward to welcoming you.
Sally and Adrian Powell.

lovely setting, cosy cabin, fantastic hosts

Just back from a wonderful 4 nights in the Billy Goat Cabin (me, partner and 2yo) which was a fantastic break. We loved having the swimming pool and used it every afternoon, saw some small planes and microlights on the airstrip (very exciting for our daughter!), bbq'd on the firepit, and also used it for warmth and chats in the evenings. The cabin is very well built and insulated, compost toilet works well, bed is comfy, and setting is beautiful - well away from the house with fantastic views out over the fields and surrounded by a little woodland. Sally and Adrian were super helpful and brought us everything we asked for including more wood for our evening firepits, and we had an amazing time. Also ate at the Pilgrim pub one lunchtime which serves enormous portions of very good food. Can't recommend this place enough and we will definitely be back!

The Super Cute Billy Goat Cabin

Just back from a fab family break (2 adults + 2 kids 4 & 11) at the super cute Billy Goat cabin. The cabin is well insulated and didn't really get cold (its well constructed with a good floor and double glazed windows) so we only used the log burner for a brief time in the evenings and early morning as it had the cabin toasty in no time. We took a massive cool box with the first night's dinner ready to reheat on one of the provided gas rings. Then used the fire pit for a couple of BBQs finished off with obligatory S’ mores while star gazing the clear night sky 🌙 There is plenty to do in the area, we checked out Sudeley Castle, Hereford cathedral, MFA Bowl, Green Spider climbing, Goodrich Castle and Clearwell caves. Then used the amazing swimming pool in the afternoon to tire the kids out before dinner. It was liberating to have the pool to ourselves and not feel rushed. Sally is a lovely host, super helpful and friendly. I was going to write this review as soon as I got home but I'm thinking of rebooking and would like to keep the place to myself. It was a perfect secluded break and felt like a safe option in these unusual times.

A place of calm amongst nature with a touch of luxury

What a wonderful space to relax, tucked away from the farm, nestling by a miniature woods, the cabin was a perfect place to get away from the city. Whilst basic it still had everything for an enjoyable stay, a comfy bed, wood burner to keep us warm, camping cooker and cooking utensils, drinking water and a compost toilet. With views out across fields as far as you can see and complete quiet and peace and stars at night, it is a place to rest and enjoy. A great spot to access walks and Hereford too, and when you finally return after a day in nature, waiting is a heated pool that is fully exclusive to you! Amazing! It was also fun to watch the microlight aircraft take off right next to the cabin, something you don’t experience every day. And to top it all, Sally is the loveliest host who will give you a warm welcome and is at the end of the phone if you need anything. Can’t recommend the Billy Goat Cabin enough!

A perfect week's retreat

A super place beautiful setting and Sally could not have been more helpful. We were 4 adults so having a 'pod' for son and his girlfriend was great. Cabin very cosy and though we had a glorious week's September weather it was quick to warm up at night and early morning with the wood stove. Pool a super bonus and we made much use of it. Great location for exploring - over to Wales, Forest of Dean etc though Herefordshire is very beautiful. Spent so much time in the outdoors we did not go into Hereford once - next time!!

Hidden Gem we would have liked to hVe kept to ourselves

We had a fantastic family stay in Billy Goat cabin back in August. It was so good we booked again in September... The cabin was so cosy, a real treat to stay in. The views are amazing, the kids loved adventuring around the place & to top it all off we all had a relaxing swim after a day out at Go Ape. Very reluctant to write a review as it really is a hidden Gem that we would like to have kept to ourselves!! But Sally & Adrian deserve a big thumps up for being very welcoming and creating a special place. Thank you👍

Perfect spot for a fun family break

We are a family of 4 and stayed at the cabin as a birthday treat for one of the kids. We all absolutely loved it and had a perfect weekend of playing in the woods, swimming (a lot), relaxing in the cabin, playing games and pizza on the fire pit. Owners were really friendly and couldn't have been more helpful.

A wonderfully equipped cabin in a beautiful, quiet spot

We absolutely loved our stay at The Billy Goat Cabin! Sally was great in communicating and ensuring we had everything we needed, and was so welcoming! The scenery is stunning and you feel as if you are the only ones around for miles! The cabin and pods are sweet and surprisingly spacious and come with all necessary essentials. We took full advantage of the bbq and pizza oven whilst staying and managed to use the pool for an evening swim which was equally wonderful! We cannot recommend this place enough and will definitely be returning soon. Thank you so much Sally and co!!

Beautiful - simple but still luxurious

We had a brilliant stay at the cabins as a family of four adults and three children. That first drive up to the cabin really does take your breath away - stunning scenery and the facilities themselves are so simple but work really well. The cabins were comfortable, immaculately clean and contained everything we needed for our three night stay. The pool was fantastic and kept the kids entertained for hours, as did watching the light aircraft land while enjoying pizza from the firepit oven! The site is in a great location, close to amenities but far enough away from it all to really switch off and relax. We were made to feel so welcome. We'll be back for sure! Thank you so much to Sally, Ade and family.

A wonderful and peaceful stay

A really warm and friendly greeting from the family. The cabin and bedroom pods are lovely, our children loved sleeping in the little pod. As we had just come out of lockdown and the children had really missed swimming, the pool was a joy, very clean and warm and available exclusively to us throughout our stay. If you stay here just think camping but with a proper bed. We took all our usual camping kit and cooking equipment and managed really well. We had endless fires and collected wood from the little woodland next to the cabin..joy. The air strip is an added bonus, watching the microlights taking off and land was great fun. If you want to escape life but don't mind putting some effort in, then this is the place to go. We will return. Thanks

Simply beautiful

Our party of 4 adults and 3 children had a brilliant time at these gorgeous little cabins. Everything you need is there (or a short distance away), the cabins were immaculately clean and the views were stunning. From beginning to end, Sally and family were the perfect hosts. The kids loved the space to explore in safety and the pool was a lovely added bonus. We will definitely, definitely be back!!

Quiet, private, rustic luxury

We had such a great stay! Sally was so helpful and welcoming and we had everything we needed. The cabin is perfect for a private camping retreat and the pool was a perfect added bonus. We'll be back!

Idyllic

From the moment you book, to the moment you have to leave to rejoin the rat race, Sally and her whole family are welcoming and make the whole experience so easy and enjoyable. The cabin is amazing, warm, comfy, individual. The fact that you can also have one built for you at your own home is extremely tempting! The location is superb. Close enough to enjoy all the area has to offer but also secluded and safe to allow kids to play in the woods and field is great. We loved watching the microlights take off and land on the airstrip. The jewel in the crown, for us, was the use of the swimming pool, that our two boys LOVED! This place is perfect for single travellers and couples looking for a weekend getaway to chillax or a romantic hideaway, but is also perfect for families who just want to kick back and forget about work and stress. We have already recommended this place to family and friends and will definitely be returning. Thank you Sally and family for a truly wonderful stay. Ben, Nikki and Boys

A lovely stay at Broadmeadow Farm

My family and I stayed in the cabin at Broadmeadow Farm over Easter 2016. The stay could not have been better: the cabin is lovely: beautifully built and furnished and very cosy with the log burner going. The view over the farm and to the Welsh hills from the front of the cabin is stunning and it was a joy to wake up to!

Sally and Adrian and their lovely family made us feel very welcome and the stay all the more enjoyable. Access to the fabulous swimming pool was a great bonus as was watching the occasional plane crossing your path on the grass airstrip nearby.

The cabin is close enough to Hereford for convenience but remote enough to feel you are properly at peace in the beautiful countryside.

We would love to go back to Broadmeadow Farm and do the same things over again!!

Thank you to Sally and Adrian for sharing their cabin and hospitality with us!
