Lower Milton

UK England West Country Somerset

Milton Lane, Wookey Hole, Wells, Somerset, BA5 1DE
Space, seclusion and serenity in spades.

Let’s be honest, camping at Lower Milton is all about simple, back-to-basics camping in a good old fashioned field or three. Run by the laid-back and amiable Nick, Lower Milton comprises two very large fields and one smaller one. On closer inspection, it reveals a few hidden gems, notably a gorgeously sheltered hollow at the bottom of the main field; bordered by tall dark trees and a crystal clear stream, it’s the pitch perfect spot for a roaring camp fire and, no doubt, a song or two, plus there are rope swings aplenty for the little ‘uns. On-site facilities are basic, and a bit of a walk to get to if you’re camped down at the bottom – but that won’t bother hardened campers, or the kids for that matter. You can enjoy views across the Somerset Levels and of Glastonbury Tor, while off-site, one of the most appealing things about Lower Milton is its proximity to Wells, as well as a stack of fab local walks, notably Ebbor Gorge, where three trails of varying difficulty offer enticing rambles through thickly wooded valleys and limestone outcrops. If you’ve still got energy to expend, head to Priddy a bit further on, where two welcoming hostelries lie in wait.

Back to basics

Great campsite, as long as you are prepared for basic facilities. Fantastic location and loads of space. Very laid back campsite which meant a very relaxed weekend. Kids loved the rope swings and being able to play in the woods. Wells is extremely close, and has great pubs, shops and takeaways. Wookey Hole is a short walk away and there is a lovely walk up Ebor Gorge. Fires allowed with no restrictions nowhere or with what. We will be back soon.

Old fashioned camping!

We stayed here for a last minute camping trip in mid-september wanting to have one last trip for the year. We turned up on friday evening and were met by the owner who stated that we could pitch up in any of the fields. We chose to stay in the second field in a shady corner spot although we found a small area further down by a stream which we would have preferred had we not already put the tent up! The campsite was fairly quiet and campfires were allowed which was a bonus and the toilets and were nice and clean. Very close to Wells for days out and takeaways, we will definitely come back with friends next year a thoroughly enjoyable weekend!
