Hill Farm, West Monkton, Taunton, Somerset TA2 8LP
You need only flick through the guestbook in the bunting-strewn communal Dutch barn at Somerset Yurts for a taste of this site’s restorative powers. The book overflows with enthused messages about the four cosy yurts whose sunny doors welcome guests into their warm embrace. One couple even got engaged during their stay here, so it’s not just a spot for families to unwind, but a romantic getaway for two, too.
Children’s gleeful smiles match Mum and Dad’s as they open the red, orange, blue or green door into their snug Mongolian sanctuary, where they can get to grips with lighting the wood-burning stove and pick herbs from the pot outside ready for a barbecued dinner on the veranda decking.
The neighbouring fields are home to the farm’s dairy herd tended by Mark and Emma, who set up the yurt site and are continually adding little touches to the place to make it an even more magical glamping retreat. They meet and greet their guests on arrival, and any kids are welcome to join Mark for evening milking time before heading back to huddle around the large communal firepit in the corner of the yurt field.
It might feel as though you’re in your own remote hideaway here, situated as you are in the countryside calm just a short drive from the natural beauty of the Quantock Hills, but in fact you’re only 10 minutes away from the many trappings of Taunton town. So come and help yourself to the best of both worlds and leave your own mark in the guestbook – if, that is, there are any blank pages left.
