Sociable glamping from an award-winning yurt and tipi group, surrounded by some of Somerset's top attractions

When you think of the faces behind Glastonbury you often think of the famous headliners, but the glampers of Glastonbury will owe their experiences to the owners of Hearthworks and Pilton Yurt Camps, Tara and her family. Supplying the tipis and yurts for Glastonbury for the last fifteen years (as well as other festivals) earned them the award of the UK’s best glamping supplier, so it’s fair to say you’ll be in safe hands throughout your stay at their new, summertime glamping site just five minutes' drive down the road from the festival site.

Combining all the glam and views of Glastonbury with a peaceful country setting, Pilton Yurt Camps is an ideal base for gathering with friends and having your own bit of festival-esque fun. Rather than letting out each of the yurts and tipis individually, Tara has grouped some together in mini glamping 'villages' making the site ideal for groups of friends having a long-awaited get together. Inside each yurt there are proper king-sized beds and soft-furnishings, while the villages also come with a yurt kitchen and dining space, with a fridge, stove and all the other bits and bobs you’ll need to impress your fellow glampers at mealtimes.

For ingredients, it's two miles to Thorner’s Farm Shop or, in the opposite direction, the site is a scenic walk or cycle away from the picturesque village of Pilton, where there's a Co-Op, a good pub and a beautiful Normal church. It's by car that you'll really see how much is on your doorstep however. Glastonbury Tor, Wookey Hole, Nunney Castle, Kilver Court and the cathedral and Bishops Palace in Wells are all within around 15 minutes of your camp. Tour them all over the course of several days or stay put, grab a drink and relax in the sun with all your friends. Your time here is whatever you want to make it and, once you truly de-stress, you may find you never go too far at all.

Nearby

Cast your net within a 15–20 minutes’ drive radius of Pilton and there really is a wealth of options. To the west, Glastonbury and a climb up Glasontbury Tor, to the north the diminutive city of Wells, home to the Medieval Bishops Palace (01749 988111) and a grand cathedral (01749 674483), and, just beyond, the Mendip Hills AONB and Wookey Hole. To the east is Kilver Court Gardens and 14th-century Nunney Castle (0370 333 1181), now cared for by English Heritage, and, to the south, is the foodie and artsy town of Bruton. If you’re willing to travel further still there’s also family-favourite Longleat Safari Park, and that’s still comfortably within half an hour.

Food & Drink

It's around 10 minutes to the Prestleigh Inn at Shepton (01749830179), a relaxed local pub serving real ales that you can enjoy inside or out front in their outdoor seating space. Wells is just over 15 minutes away and has lots of nice restaurants and pubs to choose from. You might recognise The Crown (01749673457) from the film Hot Fuzz but it's featured in a lot more stories than that, dating back to the 15th century, the relaxed pub, with exposed brick and beams, has a bar and restaurant area with terrace seating. The White Hart (01749672056) is another top option, managed by a Michelin-star chef in a quintessential English pub setting.

Getting There

If you’re coming from the north, turn left off the A361 at Top Street into Pilton. From Pilton, take East Town Lane and continue for one mile. 100 metres after a tight right bend in the road you'll see the entrance to Pilton Yurts on the right. Continue on into the field, keeping the house on your left.

Castle Cary has the nearest railway station (seven miles), then buses run to Pilton village but that's still a good mile and a half from the actual yurt site, so taking a cab is often the best option.
