All-American vintage Airstreams on the banks of a Somerset river

If you want to look the part at Glamstreams pull on a pair of Levis, lace up your Converse and chuck a trucker’s cap on your head. Two all-American Airstream caravans will provide the backdrop to today’s vintage-filtered Instagram post. Two are the classic aluminium of a thousand movie cameos, while one is an unusual pearlescent blue. Found across the USA by owner Nick, and rescued from various states of disrepair, they're now parked up at Brookover Farm next to the vast Orchardleigh Estate, home to a golf course, a historic house and 500 acres of parkland. It's all-American accommodation in a very British spot.

Each van provides self-contained accommodation with a well-equipped kitchenette, a shower and an eco-friendly, waterless toilet. Beth sleeps up to five while Gloria, the dinkiest and older of the two, can still sleep a family with enough space for four. Linen and towels are provided along with a healthy dose of 60s and 70s style. Outside there’s seating and a fire pit and the vista from your van is across sheep-grazed fields and rolling hills; the soundtrack is of the Mells river babbling by. You can fish or set out on a walk on footpaths through the fields.

Frome, just two miles away, is home to the closest pubs, independent shops and a thriving market scene. You can reach the town on foot or set out in the other direction to explore Orchardleigh’s parkland (the house and gardens are not open to the public). Further afield, but not far, there’s an even grander estate that’s worth a visit: Longleat with its house, gardens and famous drive-through safari park that offers a taste of life on the plains, complete with lions, tigers and elephants. When you’ve finished your African encounter, it’ll be back to your American base in the best-of-British countryside. Three continents in one day... not bad for a holiday in Somerset.

Nearby

There are great walking routes right from the farm, offering peaceful walks with stunning views. A route that's good for walkers and, especially, cyclists is the 18-mile Collier's Way cycle path that links to Mells in one direction and Radstock in the other. Yoga sessions are also available – contact the site directly to book in. For golfers, there's the 18-hole Orchardleigh Golf Course (01373 454200), right next door. In nearby Frome, just two miles from Glamstreams, you can stroll along lanes and cobbled streets, and check out the many independent shops, cafes and pubs. The Frome Independent Market is huge, and attracts a fabulously eclectic bunch of stall holders on the first Sunday of every month. For live music and events check out what's going on at Cheese and Grain ahead of your stay. Within 30 minutes’ drive you’ll find the pretty town of Bruton, with attractions including Hauser and Wirth Art Gallery and some great places to eat (see below), the stunning Georgian city of Bath and the renowned Longleat Safari Park. Further afield, Cheddar Gorge, the city of Bristol, Avalon Marshes wildlife centre (01458 860556), the famous festival town of Glastonbury, Stonehenge, The Hawk Conservancy Trust (01264 773850) and Haynes International Museum (01963 440 804) are all within an hour's drive.

Food & Drink

Nick recommends At The Chapel (01749 814070), a restaurant, bakery and winestore in Bruton, 13 miles from Glamstreams and The Roth Bar and Grill by the Hauser and Wirth Art Gallery (01749 814700) in the same town, which is also a good place to pick up the locally-produced Godminster cheeses as they have a shop on the high street. Closer to site, the last-Sunday-of-the-month Frome Independent Market has a large food element if you're lucky enough to catch it and there's a more regular market in Frome every Wednesday and Saturday morning too. Try The Artisan (01373 300102) in town for somewhere to eat and drink while you're out.

Open

The Owner Says

A stay in a luxury GlamStreams Airstream caravan at Black Sheep Glamping is the best of all worlds. The Airstreams are fully fitted with kitchen, bathroom, heating, linens, etc, so it's a level way above canvas camping. And yet, the glorious riverside setting of the site means that you literally step out into nature from your front door. Sleeping in Nature, without sleeping on the ground.

Brookover Farm is tucked away along a private drive in the Mells River valley, just outside the buzzing town of Frome. Set deep in gorgeous Somerset countryside, on a private estate, sheep and horses abound and it’s the perfect place for you and the family to unwind. All the Airstreams have their own river frontage,  fishing is definitely on the agenda. With fire pits, private outside seating areas, and stunning views at every turn, Black Sheep Glamping offers you the best of glamping this summer.

You can cook in your fully-fitted Airstream kitchen, or you could take advantage of the many catering options, from Indian Thali to French brasserie dishes, and local farm shops. .

There are great walking routes right from the farm, and a link to the cycle path that runs from Mells and Radstock. Golfers will doubtless head over the hill to the fabulous 18 hole Orchardleigh Golf Course, right next door.

And Brookover Farm is the perfect location for visiting the area, from nearby Frome with its cobbled streets, markets and funky independent shops and bars, to the world-famous Longleat Safari Park.

Lovely place lovely people!

We stayed with Glamstreams last week and had such a lovely time! The airstream is very comfy and I slept like a baby on the memory foam mattress. We usually camp in a bell tent - but what luxury to not have to set anything up! We rocked up on the friday with our suitcases and within minutes had a cocktail prepared and were ready to settle in to relax. We had a lovely long walk around the beautiful farm and then settled in for an evening by the fire. Nick is lovely and nothing was too much trouble. I would recommend Glamstreams highly. In fact i have and my brother and sister in law are staying this week!
