Modern en-suite glamping cabins in a quiet paddock, within easy reach of Bath, Bristol, Wells and Frome

Swing around the compass and nothing seems far from Perry's Paddock. Bristol, Bath and the Mendip Hills, for example, and Frome, Wells and Longleat House... they're all comfortably within a half-hour drive. And yet the paddock, a 10-minute walk outside the village of Paulton, is just that. A quiet paddock. A patch of hilltop countryside, with views back down over the shallow valley. It's rural yet accessible and, thanks to the Perry family, it's now a very comfortable place to glamp too.

Just east of the Mendip Hills, this well drained meadow, formerly a pony paddock and now parcelled up with horses still grazing at the far end, is home to three modern cabins, with jaunty roofs and wood-clad exteriors. Each is fully furnished with bedside tables, storage, super king size bed and space to sleep two children (you'll need to bring your own beds for the kids). 21st-century touches include the plush en-suite, with heated towel rails and a dual-head shower, and a smart TV (though there's no WiFi, so you'll need to hotspot from your phone). Glass doors let in plenty of natural light from the covered deck area outside, where there's also a table and outdoor chairs, and you're welcome to try cooking over the firepit (there's a Co-op within easy walking distance in the village, which is very handy for stocking up on supplies).

Paulton isn't the only place to walk. Cross the country road at the paddock's entrance and you can follow footpaths into Midsomer Norton and Radstock or take a path north and join the Limestone Link trail, a picturesque long-distance bridleway that links the Mendip Hills with the Cotswolds and, here, follows the little stream of Cam Brook. Bring bikes, meanwhile, and you can hop on a popular Colliers Way that follows a former railway line towards Bath, nine miles away. You can end your ride in the town or stay on the old line to beautiful Dundas Aqueduct crossing over the River Avon.

Each pod has a super king size bed (including bedding), bedside tables and an en-suite complete with a large shower with a drench head, toilet and wash basin, please bring your own towels and toiletries. The pods are well insulated but also have central heating, they also have a kettle, fire pit/BBQ, outdoor decking with a table and two chairs as well as a private garden and parking area. There's a smart TV inside but no WiFi, so you'll have to hot-spot off your phone if you'd like to use the smart functions. Up to two children are allowed but you will need to bring your beds for them.

Suitable For

This glamping site is for all ages. Glamping, groups – yes. Tents, campervans, motorhomes, caravans, kids, dogs – no.

Perry’s Paddock is 10 minutes from the Colliers Way cycle route, linking up with Bath and Frome via old railway lines interrupted only by peaceful country lanes and the beautiful Dundas Aqueduct. Join other Sustrans routes and you can also continue on country lanes to Bristol (13 miles from Perry's Paddock). If you’d rather a gentler route to the cities, then Bath is only a 20-minute drive away. Bath is steeped in history and full of independent shops, quirky bars and famed tourist attractions, like the roman baths and The Royal Crescent. Frome is a similar distance away, also taking around 20 minutes by car. Once there you can spend the day window shopping along the cobbled street of Catherine Hill, taking in the history of the area at the medieval Nunney Castle that dates back to the 1370s or admiring the beauty of the central walled garden.

Food & Drink

There are lots of pubs within walking distance of Perry’s Paddock, The Lamb Inn (01761 419037) is a particular favourite, just a 10-minute walk from the site. La Campagna (01761 418443) is a beautiful spot with good Italian food under 15 minutes’ walk away or, by day, try Café Bombero (07368 518545), a cosy café in the village of Paulton, serving full English breakfasts, light brunches and moreish cakes. There are lots of takeaway options in the village too, including a Chinese and a fish and chip shop if you’d rather eat back at your pod, and there's also a Co-Op within walking distance and a larger Tesco a five-minute drive away.

Fabulous few days

We really enjoyed our stay in these lovely pods, they are well thought out and comfortably furnished and set in beautiful surrounding. Emma and Simon are great hosts and were always on hand to help with any questions we had. The location is peaceful but a great central position with lots to do a stones throw away.

Lovely experience

We booked Perry’s Paddock as our first “Glamping “ experience. We had good communication with the host, Emma, prior to our arrival. Our pod was lovely. The owners had taken a lot of pride in the finish and finishing touches. The bed was really comfortable, enough space to put up our double air bed for the kids and ample simple storage for our belongings. We had mixed weather but with central heating and double glazing, the pod was cosy when the weather was poor but when the sun shone, the private outdoor space next to the pod with bbq, fire pit and picnic bench meant we could enjoy outside too. The lovely sheltered deck with table and chairs was nice too and a good spot to enjoy the lovely views and horses in the next paddock. The quirky communal horse trailer housed a washing up sink and fridge freezer and fire wood and charcoal was available to purchase if you needed it. Can’t wait to come back!

A lovely few days away to relax and recharge

We found Perry’s Paddock very comfortable and spacious. The accommodation has ample room and very clean inside, the bed was so big and comfortable, spring water from the taps too with a lot of space at the side for cooking and relaxing. We were relaxed the whole time, met the owners who were friendly and helpful and introduced the child in the group to their horses. We would 100% recommend staying here, lovely little villages close by and some great scenic views. We will be staying here again
