Campfires, countryside and comfortable glamping yurts, all on the outskirts of the Cotswolds' prettiest town

Picturesque Chipping Campden, in the northern stretches of the Cotswolds, is both famously pretty and elegantly varied, with its high street showcasing several centuries of architectural styles all in one long, terraced row. It seems appropriate that, across the fields, there’s a place similarly diverse in style, but just as pleasing on the eye.

Campden Yurts is a hillside small holding turned glamping site offering simple, comfortable, family friendly holidays. Where once goats, ponies and chickens roamed and rows of vegetables grew, there now sit two spacious, 18ft yurts, each accommodating up to five people. A wood-burning stove, rugs, sheepskin throws and fold out futons dot each interior, while a main double bed boasts views up through the central crown window to the stars above. During the day natural sunlight pools through the circular space, while a discreet solar power battery system allows for some extra lighting at night. In addition, each yurt has its own private bathroom, and they also share a well-equipped kitchen room.

Despite this excellent self-catered set-up, owner Jane particularly likes seeing guests outside their yurts, where tripods and grills are provided for a more authentic cooking experience. Campfires are very much a part of the Campden Yurts experience and if you really fancy taking it up a notch, there’s even a cob oven you can use, lighting a wood-fire inside and cooking your own pizzas.

Stretch your legs with the short walk to Chipping Campden where you can stock up on goodies from the local delicatessen and grocery stores – the market town is brimming with refreshing, independent shops, galleries and a museum celebrating Campden's Arts and Crafts movement – then take a break in one of the tiny tearooms. It takes around 15 minutes to stroll the footpath into town. Popular waterside towns, Upper Slaughter and Bourton-on-the-Water, are also both just a short drive away. Each vies for the title of the prettiest town in the Cotswolds.

Alas, not every town can win that accolade, but Chipping Campden is certainly on the shortlist. What with its honey-coloured houses, 17th-century market hall and cluster of National Trust-owned properties, it really does offer the quintessential Cotswolds experience. And now, with a yurt glamping retreat on the doorstep, it’s on the shortlist of Hipcamp’s favourite places too.

Such a lovely site with 2 yurts.
This is such a lovely set up with 2 yurts on site. The owner Jane is very kind and thoughtful. The yurts were beautiful in side and were so clean and cosy. Each had its own bathroom and tiller which was also spotless. It has been so well thought out with everything you could possibly ask for. We had such a lovely stay.

We were looked after very well. Jane messaged us to make sure all was OK as we were running late and made up an extra bed for our daughter. The yurts are super cosy and the beds were very comfortable. A really good environment for chilling out and getting away from your phone. Lots of space for our daughter to run around and lots of amazing memories made in a short space of time.

Having stayed in yurts before we knew what to expect, but in the current situation we found the attention and thought given to details of hygiene very reassuring. A yurt is a really special space, and very relaxing. I also loved the lack of TV and WiFi -perfect off grid getaway. On our final night, we had some good news via phone however, and Daisy became the venue for a 'virtual' celebration with friends and family. A great setting and a good memory to take away!

Me and my partner stayed in the ‘buttercup’ yurt for 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were there for 2 nights. Jane was very accommodating and the site was very clean and had everything we needed. Will definitely come again in the summer once our little one arrives!

We absolutely loved our stay, it was only 2 nights as It was my 2yr olds first time camping and he loved every second of it. The yurts are clean and spacious, all you really need to take is your bedding , towels and everything else is there for you. Lots to do and lovely walks, I will definitely be returning next year.

Originally booked to celebrate end of exams with our teenage daughters for June 2020 but due to Covid-19 pandemic this had to be postponed. Jane was very accommodating in changing our booking to late August and adding an extra night as this became our main family holiday for 2020. The whole site and our yurt "Daisy" were extremely clean and tidy and all facilities were more than adequate and well equipped. Great central location for a host of activities in the Cotswolds and within walking distance of Chipping Campden for a good selection of pubs and eateries. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway break with the luxury additions "glamping" brings!

From the host
Nestled into a corner of the Cotswold countryside, Campden Yurts provides space for families, couples and small groups to relax and recharge. Our smallholding Hillside Nursery has been in the family since 1970. Once a plant nursery it became a self-sufficient home that 'The Good Life' could have been based on. Goats, ponies, chickens, vegetables and fruit all thrived here. In 2017 we decided to share this special place with guests instead of goats! Our glamping site was started and the yurts arrived, closely followed by people who wanted to enjoy an outdoors holiday but with comfort and ease. We have added to the site each year - a pizza oven, a communal shelter, a dog paddock and more planting to encourage wildlife. Being as environmentally friendly as possible is important to us and reflected in the products we use and decisions we make. Who knows what we will add next!
Nearby attractions

There are so many things to do and enjoy around Chipping Campden and North Gloucestershire. The scenery and landscape, the small market towns and pretty villages. We have National Trust properties, gardens, arboretums, castles and a palace all within the Cotswolds.

One place to visit for a great day out is Adam Henson's (of BBC Countryfile fame)  Cotswold Farm Park.  A little bit further afield near Burford is the Cotswold Wildlife Park with giraffes, rhinos, hippos and other animals. Both attractions are great for families.

For many, simply exploring the pretty Cotswold villages is the main attraction. Easy but pleasant footpaths link most villages together. The small market town of Chipping Camden is just a 15 minute walk from our glamping site. It has plenty of English pubs, independent shops, tearooms, bistros, galleries and a museum.  Campden's high street is famously pretty but unusual – long, broad and flanked on each side by an almost unbroken single terrace of varied architectural styles.  Broadway, Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the-Water are a short drive away, as well as Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford, a little further.

Food and drink

Our glamping site is  well equipped for self-catering (and campsite cooking). All you need from pots, pans, colanders, graters, chopping boards etc are all here. You can also buy homemade jams, marmalades & chutneys.  Seasonal produce (when available) including tomatoes, plums and apples. Breakfast hampers stuffed with farmshop goodies can be pre-ordered.

In Chipping Campden there are a number of tea-rooms, 7 pubs/hotels and restaurants. (Please pre-book tables). These include The Eight Bells, The Lygon and The Noel Arms who host award-winning curry nights. Great cakes and light lunches can be enjoyed at The Bantam tea-rooms, Campden Coffee Company and The Badgers. Chipping Campden also offers shops including the Co-Op, One Stop and a meat/fish and greengrocers along with 2 delicatessens.  Chinese and Indian take-aways available too. Both local farm shops sell local produce and have cafes.

We host regular Pizza Parties on site for our guests. We provide homemade dough and sauce - you just bring your toppings of choice. These are great fun, interactive and tasty! Just let Jane know in advance/upon arrival if you would like to have a pizza party during your stay,
