Noah himself would be charmed by Honeybuns' well-constructed, cosy 'Ark', tucked away in the sweeping Dorset hills
Back in 2001, Emma Goss-Custard arrived in Dorset armed with only her mother’s and grandmother’s recipes, and the goal to produce a wide range of delicious, hand-made cakes and biscuits. Fast-forward over a decade and Emma’s cakes have been honoured with an array of prestigious awards, not only for their heavenly taste, but also for her careful use of natural ingredients and low environmental impact. As Honeybuns expanded, Emma decided to share her fabulous corner of south-west England with those wanting to enjoy a romantic, glamping getaway. And as all good bakers do, Emma has risen to the occasion (sorry, couldn’t resist!).

Tucked away amongst sweeping hills is Honeybuns vintage caravan, sleeping two adults*. Don’t let the term ‘caravan’ put you off, this is truly a unique abode as there’s hardly any of these ‘Arks’ available for hire in England. Noah himself would be charmed by the attention to detail of this well-constructed, cosy accommodation that comes furnished with an oversized double bed, fully equipped kitchen area, hot water and sole use of a bathroom with a free standing loo, roll top bath with shower, and a washbasin. Traditional campers (that hire the caravan) are welcome to pack their canvas and pitch up close by, marvelling at the panoramic views towards the unspoiled Bulbarrow Hill.

The nearby historic town of Sherborne (six miles away) is without doubt, one of England’s most beautiful towns. Its cluster of honey-coloured buildings, magnificent eighth century abbey and ranks of independent boutiques makes for a wonderful day out. Winner of the best market town in the south west, Sherborne exudes wealth. Evidence of ‘cash splashing’ lies in the town’s two castles. One, a royalist stronghold during the English Civil War reduced to a picturesque ruin by Oliver Cromwell in 1645. The other, Sherborne New Castle, whose grounds received a makeover from landscape gardening pioneer, Capability Brown. Today, visitors can relax and marvel at the wonderfully serene lake he added.

Back at Honeybuns the attention to detail continues with a small orchard, swing benches, rare breed chickens and Cino, the resident donkey. Does glamping get any better? We think not. But of course you’ll have pay Emma a visit to find out for yourself. And with all that attention to detail, we think a visit is the very least you can do.

Suitable For

Glampers, romantics and cake lovers – yes. Tents, caravans, motorhomes, large groups and dogs – no.

Honeybuns is only 15 miles from the historic market town of Dorchester, where you get two locations for the price of one. Firstly, a genuine county town, and secondly, Thomas Hardy's fictional Casterbridge. Born just outside Dorchester, Hardy clearly used it to add accuracy to his work, so much so that his literary locations can be found among the town's delightful white Georgian terraces. Dorchester is also home to some incredibly varied museums including: The Dinosaur Museum (01305 269880), The Teddy Bear Museum (01305 266040) and the much acclaimed Tutankhamun Exhibition (01305 269571.) Brought the energy sapping kids? Then take them to Coolplay (01258 474666) in Sturminster Newton; where rope bridges, ball pools, and tubes should wear out those little terrors. Pop into Monkey World (01929 462537) and help support a great cause. The centre works with governments from across the globe to stop the smuggling of primates from the wild. Refugees of this illegal trade (as well as those that have suffered abuse or neglect) are rehabilitated into natural living groups.

Food & Drink

Honeybuns can supply local honeys, jam, chutney, cheese, breads, fruit and gluten free items. There are several good pubs in the area including: The White Hart (01963 23301) - you can reach on a footpath from the site (3 miles each way across the fields. There’s also the Three Elms Inn (01935 812881) and The Digby Tap (01935 813148) in Sherborne. Come in early September to experience Sturminster Newton’s Cheese Festival, or take a trip to the award-winning Dorset Blue Soup (01963 23133) at Woodbridge Farm. For those with more sophisticated palettes, English Oak Vineyards (01258 858205) offers tours and tastings of their exceptional sparkling wines.

Perfect weekend escape

Perfect weekend escape, everything was perfect, the views, the ark, the service , the atmosphere. Wish you could rent it for longer than 2 nights.

Great stay, great location, lovely people.

Cosy caravan from a bygone age, tucked away in a quiet part of Dorset. A relaxing stay for my wife and myself. Sitting with a glass of wine listening to nature whilst tending the barbecue, with the added bonus of terrific weather, what could be better? Friendly and welcoming staff, on email, upon reception and in the pop up shop. Highly recommended, thanks to all at Honeybuns.

Truly perfect spot

I bought this weekend as a birthday surprise for my other half. I honestly cannot speak highly enough of the experience- fantastic customer service, lovely location and the Arc itself was very cute and well stocked. The owner Emma really went out of her way for us. If in doubt, book it.
