Luxury glamping with supreme stargazing, just south of Dartmoor and 25 minutes from the Devon coast
Book a stay at Dartmoor Domes and you'll swap your bedroom ceiling for a canopy of stars. Tucked in a little meadow that’s surrounded by trees in deepest, darkest Devon, these geodesic domes offer a window into the natural world. The skylight in the roof lets you stargaze while you lay in bed and the huge picture windows let you spy on deer passing by.
It’s all about being comfortably cocooned in nature at Dartmoor Domes, which sits just south of the national park and 10 miles from the nearest beaches. On arrival it seems appropriate that you leave the car behind and walk 150 metres through a woodland and over a stream before finding the site’s four domes. Each sits on its own wooden deck, like a bubble that’s floated in and landed there. The reality, of course, was more hard work than that. A labour of love by owner James, who carried every piece of the puzzle into site and constructed somewhere to stay so his glamping guests don’t have to.
The domes are insulated and inside have made-up beds and a log burner to keep things cosy. Outside there’s a little kitchen cabin and a solar shower on your deck with your own private toilet just a few steps away. Sit outside and from this sheltered low-point in the land, you can see alpacas grazing in the fields that rise up behind you and hear woodpeckers tap, tap, tapping in the trees. The site is bathed in sun from mid-morning until sundown and if you get too hot, the tinkling stream which passes by each dome offers a place to cool hot feet (or drinks).
From this location in south west Devon, Dartmoor and the coast hold equal appeal; one an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the other a National Park. It was a love of these outdoor spaces that kept James and his wife Em coming on holiday to Devon year after year, until they decided to stay. It’s the wild open moorland that James says he loves the most but, then again, there’s that particularly spectacular stretch of the South West Coast Path. And don’t forget those stars; so dazzling, he put a window in the roof so you wouldn't miss them as you drift off to sleep.
Each dome has its own kitchen, bathroom and toilet. Inside they have a king-sized bed and bunk beds or single futon beds and can sleep up to four, with bedding, towels and eco-friendly toiletries provided. Domes are insulated and have wood-burning stoves for heating and solar fans for keeping them cool in the summer, as well as solar lighting. The kitchens have a fridge, sink, two-ring gas stove and all the utensils you should need for cooking. Outside each dome has a barbecue and either a double hammock or sun loungers and a picnic table. There are also two fire pits.
Glampers, couples, families and groups (by prior arrangement) – yes. Campers, campervans, motorhomes, caravans, hen and stag parties, dogs – no.
The south west edge of Dartmoor National Park is just a couple of miles away and the area is great for walking, river swimming and taking in this unique landscape. There are many outdoor activities, including great cycling, diving, climbing, surfing, swimming, scuba diving and sailing on the Devon and southern Cornish coast. The Drake's Trail cycle route passes close by site linking Tavistock to the north and Plymouth to the south. To reach it you pass through Cann Wood, less than a mile from Dartmoor Domes, and worth a visit in its own right for mountain bikers and walkers. For coastal walks, head for the well-signposted South West Coast Path, perhaps heading out from Bovisand Beach (10 miles from Dartmoor Domes). The stunning National Trust beach at Wembury is a beautiful spot for time on the beach and about the same distance, while, for surf, you'll need to head to Bantham, 20 miles away. It's only a 20-minute drive from your dome to the historic waterfront city of Plymouth, where there's all sorts of entertainment, including harbour boat tours and the National Marine Aquarium (0844 893 7938). Further afield the Eden Project (01726 811972), and Tintagel Castle are absolute musts while you're in the South West, both are a little over an hour's drive away.
Food & Drink
The closest place to get a bite to eat out is less than a mile away at The Farmyard Cafe (07711 583985), a slightly ramshackle little place that welcomes dog walkers, horseriders and offers a great-value menu of fry ups, burgers and, of course, cream teas. For the closest pub, you'll have to travel further. The Skylark Inn (01822 853258) is four miles away; a short drive or a long walk (uphill there, downhill back). And if you want a special meal out while you're on holiday, book in at The Moorland Hotel (01752 839228), three miles from Dartmoor Domes. If you're catering for yourself, you can stock up on local goodies at the Cornwood Store and Tearoom (01752 878885), five miles from site, or the recommended farm shop at Endsleigh Garden Centre (01752 895533), 10 miles away. Plymouth, with all its supermarkets, shops and eateries, is just eight miles away for anything more.

We had a spectacular stay at Dartmoor Domes, I would highly recommend it! It was lovely to hear the river whilst falling asleep, and it was super luxurious to have the privacy of our own kitchen, bathroom, loo and seating areas. Everything that you might need was provided (BBQ coals, matches, tea bags..) and a treat for us in the kitchen too which was extra special!! Tim kindly helped us out by giving us a lift when we had a flat tyre, and waited with us to make sure recovery had been arranged! We were blessed with amazing weather and there was lots to explore in the beautiful local area. Thank you for a special stay and we hope to come back one day!

Thanks for the review Cat, we are delighted you enjoyed your stay. We still can’t believe you walked back after your puncture though. We would happily have come and picked you up!
Sunny weekend in the woods!
We had a long weekend at Dartmoor Domes as our first holiday in a very long time and our first camping trip with our toddler and baby. Booking was easy and lots of information was provided to help with planning. The site is beautiful, and Tim and James were super helpful in giving us a hand with all our bits down to our dome and helping us get settled. The domes peek out along the path through the woods and our toddler was super exited seeing it for the first time. Our was well equipped and beautiful inside, the kitchen had everything we could need for the weekend including an actual fridge which was very welcome on a mega-hot weekend. Also lots of lovely touches like shampoo/conditioner/body wash in showers and a campfire welcome treat! The bed was super comfy, and our three year old loved the bunk-bed which were not super high and so felt quite safe even for a little one. Being able to visit and feed the alpacas and horses was a particular highlight for our animal loving boy, as was splashing in the river and finding the hidden hammocks in the woods! We also really appreciated having our own facilities kitchen/toilet etc. I have to add that our toddler unexpectedly came down with a tummy bug and we cannot thank Tim and Phil enough! They definitely went above and beyond and we are so grateful for their assistance! (Thankfully nothing serious but quite worrying for a time nonetheless). Our dome was particularly sunny and just a teeny but more of a shaded area for the heat of the day would have been welcome, but there were lots of area on the site to explore along the river and in the woods, and lots of recommendations for local outings (also +30 degree temperatures are not the norm in the UK). We would recommend a visit and hope to return again!

We are still amazed that you came away with such a young baby! We were never that brave!!
I hope your young man has recovered well, and thank you for such a kind review, it was a very hot weekend.
What a place!
This is such a gorgeous gem amongst the beautiful Devon Countryside! James and his family are so welcoming and friendly, helping us down to our lodge and making sure we were settled before leaving us to the peace and quiet of our dome. Our experience was even better than we could have dreamed of (we had beautiful weather which helped!) but to be off grid but with home comforts is just awesome. I don't want to share too much as I think everyone just needs to experience this! We will definitely be returning with our kids! Thanks again to all!!!
Excellent off grid camping experience
This was our first glamping experience and we couldn't of wished for a better experience, right from the start we were greeted by James who led us down to our dome with our luggage piled into a wheelbarrow, we were helped into our dome and given information on how to work the solar lights and fan, once settled in we quickly adapted to the lack of WiFi the sound of the stream and peace and quiet more than made up for it. We had local knowledge to hand from James dad (sorry don't remember his name) and we were made to feel welcome if we needed anything we could WhatsApp James or right a note on the whiteboard in the car park. Overall we loved our stay and we feel like we didn't have long enough, the facilities are great and we made use of the fire pit and BBQ maybe if the owners offered a BBQ package or cream tea to purchase we would of loved to add that to our stay as the nearest shop is tesco or Aldi in Plympton. Some locally produced food would of made our stay even better, however we were given some free range eggs which we made good use of, oh and a lovely kit to make smores was very thoughtful 😊 Thankyou for a lovely stay we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Hi Gemma, thank you for your review and suggestions.
We are working at the moment with local farmers to be able to offer local food packages.
It is something we wish we had organised before we started, but time got away from us!
Me and my girlfriend came down for the weekend just for a local get away and I don't think we could of chosen anywhere better. This is the first camping/ glamping I have personally ever been to and I thourghly enjoyed it and would happily do it again. The site was stunning with the stream running right through it, the dome was great and modern. I would happily visit again 🙂

What A Great Weekend at an Excellent Site
We have never before tried this type of holiday, but the whole "Domes Experience" was smashing. Right from the start when I made a slight error with my booking but to James, it was just one of those things and he sorted it. Getting there was interesting, (we came down across the moor from Princetown) please remember that Devon lanes are very narrow, so get used to them and be prepared to take your time - there's no need to rush, you're on holiday. On arrival, James and his family made us feel really very welcome and this helped set the tone for rest of the weekend. They had done so many little things to make each party feel special. We were in the Great Staple dome while our son and family were in Hound Tor dome. They are slightly different in layout but both very comfortable and well equipped. We took a lot of "stuff" that we didn't think would be there - for example tea bags, a knife for cutting bread, tea towels bottle opener/corkscrew (of course). Don't take it - you don't need it, they really do provide evrything. Getting all this stuff down to the domes and back up is so easy, they have the biggest wheelbarrows I've ever seen! Now, to the "dunnies", be prepared, they are something else, but they are clean, not unpleasant and definitely part of the experience. After all, this is about greener camping.... The site itself is pretty and we were lucky enough to see a range of butterflies, damsel flies, frogs and even stag beetles. We had a cracking weekend, and will certainly be going back again - there is just so much to do in the area. Thank you James, Em, and the rest of the family. as you know, this was a special break for us and your care and consideration were a big part of making it successful.
A peaceful break in a beautiful location
We had a restful weekend with friends, sitting around the firepit listening to the stream flowing by. Very relaxing, wish we could have stayed longer. James and his family were very welcoming and the domes are beautifully arranged with everything thought of from solar lighting to a S'mores kit. Lovely hot shower, great to have a picnic bench undercover and the kitchen was very well equipped. The domes are well spaced with great views down the stream. Look forward to returning and making use of the sun loungers. Thanks for a great stay.
Nothing short of amazing
n how it opens up to the field with all four Domes was quite the breathtaking view to be honest. When we got to the Dome, again, everything had been thought of. An airer for your clothes if you get wet, indoor/out door pegs, BBQ utensils, knives, forks, spoons, pots, pans, frying pan, stove kettle, wine glasses, normal juice glasses, mugs for tea and coffee not to mention how amazing they were with the happy birthday decorations for my partner. I enjoy a hot shower, a bed and a nice cup of tea, so glamping was the best option for me to enjoy somewhere special with great company. Everything was social distanced, I didn't come into contact with any of the other guests not even for a minute. There's so many other things that I loved but I don't think anyone will read this far into a review... James and family, Dartmoor Domes, there's not enough stars for how much we loved our weekend. Thanks for having us.

Thanks Giovanna, I am really pleased you enjoyed your birthday weekend with us.
An idyllic escape and chance to unplug
We had a lovely break at Dartmoor Domes very recently. James and all of his family made us feel more than welcome. The facilities and site are a remarkable feat and are sensitively designed to have as limited an impact on the environment as possible. However, this is glamping so we were equipped with the necessities that you would expect to make your stay more than comfortable - gas, electric (solar powered), including a fridge, good cooking facilities, easily able to cope with one pot meals and cooked breakfasts (though we kept things simple) hot shower etc. not to say a practical seating area and firepit. Though neither of us are experienced glampers, let alone campers, our stay (over 4 nights in mid June) felt such a wonderful and unique experience as it provided us with the most precious commodity of all these days - time. Time to relax of course, but also time to unplug. Not once did we miss the noise of the TV or background distraction of the internet. James and family were on hand to give us plenty of welcome advice in terms of local places to visit (we had pre booked the Eden project, which is around 1.5 hours away) and we also visited some other areas for the coastal walking and sea views (Salcombe, Hope Cove) also recommended by James and the family. We ate out every night and had no issues in getting a table, though we are mindful that it was not peak season. Nevertheless, the location is ideal as it feels very remote (in the right way - how do you like the idea of spotting deer roaming just 150 yards away?) yet is within 10-20 minutes drive of Plympton and Plymouth so there is plenty of choice close at hand. Again, James had plenty of recommendations. One other observation: be prepared to drive down one way tracks and hone your skills in finding suitable passing points in getting to certain destinations as this is Devon! We would recommend Dartmoor Domes to anyone and cannot thanks James and his family enough for such a great break!

thank you Kieran, we are really pleased you enjoyed your stay. Relaxing and switching the world off for a while is what we are here for!
My partner and I absolutely loved our stay in the domes! James and Em were extremely approachable and happy to help in any way. We visited salcombe on one of the days which was around a 45 minute drive and there is a host of other things to do locally as well. The domes were extremely well built and the bbq/eating area was perfect. Perfect for a weekend/rural getaway and we loved the fact there is little phone signal down in the domes to completely switch off! Would definitely recommend!!
Response from Dartmoor Domes
Thanks Josh, really pleased you enjoyed your weekend with us. Agree about Salcombe, lovely place. Thanks for leaving such a generous review
A wonderful weekend
Although my husband and I are experienced campers, recent circumstances have meant that this was our first adventure as a family of four. From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed and relaxed. James met us and gave us the guided tour and a hand with our stuff. There is a very large wheelbarrow for each plot to ferry your items from the car, which was handy. The site itself is a short walk down a hand laid path, over a well built footbridge that crosses the stream and into a beautiful clearing. There are four geodomes in total, each one with it's own decking or outside space, composting loo, separate shower room and kitchen space, that are all separate wooded structures. The domes are nicely spaced apart so you feel private if you wish to be. A beautiful river winds through the site and all of the domes have a section alongside it. I really cannot put into words how peaceful the site felt. Our children enjoyed splashing in the water and running around the open space outside our dome. The domes themselves were nicely decorated and comfortable. A log burner kept the place toasty when the nights drew in, or we would sit by the firepit outside. We also enjoyed viewing the stars through the rooftop window. The countryside around the area was spectacular and there are lots of suggestions for walks around the site entrance. Although this site feels very rural both Plymouth and Plymton are close by with supermarkets and restaurants. All in all this was an immensely comfortable and enjoyable experience. The owner ooze enthusiasm and love for the site which is infectious but also well deserved. We will definitely be back as two nights was no where near long enough to enjoy this area.
breathtaking stay at the Domes
We have just returned from a breathtaking stay at the Domes. Beauty and the call of the wild all wrapped up under a dome shaped roof. James, Em and the family have worked so hard to make this a really special venue. James could not have been more helpful in recommending places to visit in the local area. A trip to Totnes, Sharpham's Vineyard, a walk on Bigbury beach, canoeing down the Tamar- a vast array of options within 30/40 mins of the site. Do pop up to the Farm Yard Cafe (20 mins walk from the site) for a 'Full English'..."We might look a bit rustic but we serve great food"...we couldn't agree more. Whilst we are undoubtedly biased, see if you can acquire the serene 'Hound Tor' Dome, tucked away in the corner of the site with the stream for company. This was a first-rate glamping experience, you are in for a real treat!

Wonderful restful weekend at Dartmoor domes
Home from a wonderful long weekend at Dartmoor Domes for a much needed weekend away and birthday celebration. James, Emma and the family have thought of absolutely everything to make your stay extra special. We loved that it’s a real family effort and we felt so welcomed. The setting is just gorgeous and although the domes were fully booked we had loads of space and it still felt super secluded. The stream running by the dome kept our little one entertained for hours. The little bridges are perfect for playing Pooh sticks. The home made birthday cake was a chocolate extravaganza and a lovely surprise. We particularly love the green ethos of the site and love how that is reflected throughout.
