Lakeside safari tent stays on an organic farm just north of Dartmoor National Park

For an adventurous, nature holiday it doesn’t get much better than a stay in a Safari Tent on an organic farm, nestled on the edge of Dartmoor national park. You can expect plenty of fresh air, lots of lovely walks and some time away from the little screens. This is Eversfield Organic and while the holidays they provide are certainly jam packed, they don’t have to be hard work. The Safari Tents have private bathrooms, comfortable beds, log-burning stoves and a welcome pack of organic goodies for a hearty Devonshire breakfast. It’s just the thing to fuel a day out in nearby Dartmoor.

Situated in the village of Bratton Clovelly, Eversfield Organic’s Safari Tents are perched on the edge of a lake and surrounded by farmland that’s grazed by cows. Glampers don’t have access to the working farm, which is the heart of this family-run organic food business, but that’s no matter as there’s plenty of space. There are just two safari tents here with space to play, walk round the lake and sit in the shade of trees. It’s a great place to get away from it all.

Each tent is a self-contained, rustic place to stay, sleeping up to six. Cooking, heating and hot water is all provided from log-burning stoves allowing the rhythm of life to slow to a relaxing pace that suits the countryside setting. But any worries about that morning cuppa can be forgotten as with tea in hand, you can head back to the comfy bed in your canvas bedroom or sit out on the veranda overlooking the private lake.

If you’ve come from the city, this peaceful place might be enough to charm you into spending at least a day just relaxing on site. For local adventures, there’s a pub within walking distance and a larger lake, Roadford, within a short drive but it’s Dartmoor that’s the true attraction. Eversfield Organic’s tents are just seven miles from the north west edge of the national park with its wild moorland, secret swimming holes and river valleys. Lydford Gorge is a popular place to visit on this side of the park and once you’ve seen its waterfalls and whirlpools, perhaps head to nearby Merrivale and the Dartmoor Inn. You’ll be assured of a friendly welcome and a meal to match as it’s another outpost of Eversfield Organic; the perfect place to refuel for the afternoon’s adventures.

The two safari tents at Eversfield Organic are kitted out with everything you need for a self-catering stay. They have two canvas-walled bedrooms and a third shed/cupboard bedroom, sleeping up to six in total. There's a shower room and a toilet and a living and dining space with an equipped kitchenette featuring a fridge, kettle, pots, pans, crockery and cutlery. There's also a large veranda with outdoor furniture and  a wood-fired hut tub overlooking a lake and fields. All heating, hot water and cooking is provided by the tent's two log-burning stoves and logs are provided (more can be purchased on site if you run out). Bed linen and towels are provided. There's limited electricity – suitable only for powering the fridge and kettle.

Suitable For

Glampers, families, groups, dogs – yes. Campers, campervans, motorhomes, caravans – no.

There's plenty of space to enjoy the countryside outside the tents and they overlook a lovely lake that makes for the perfect evening stroll after a relaxing day. There's more waterside walking at Roadford Lake, four miles away, where you can also hire paddleboards and kayaks. The site is just outside Dartmoor National Park, so there are plenty of opportunities for walking and outdoor adventure. The market town of Okehampton is nine miles from site. The north coast of Cornwall at Bude is about 25 miles from site, the south Devon coast a little further both within an hour's drive.

Food & Drink

A complimentary breakfast pack for breakfast on the first morning is provided and you can, of course, order organic farm-fresh local produce direct from Eversfield Organics to be delivered to your tent (details provided after booking). Alternatively, there are shops and supermarkets in Okehampton, nine miles from the campsite. The Clovelly Inn (01837 871447) is the closest pub and within walking distance. It serves up classic pub food and drinks and is family friendly. Eversfield Organic's own pub, The Dartmoor Inn (01837 871400) is in Merrivale, 20 miles away, and is perfect for a special occasion or for refuelling during a day out on Dartmoor. There's also a little farm shed café at the pub site.

Getting There

Once you get into Bratton Clovelly, signposted from the A30, turn left just after the pub and make your way down the hill. At the bottom of the hill, make a right hand turn. Drive carefully for a mile along this lane. The safari tents will be on the right.

Unfortunately the site is almost impossible to reach by public transport. The closest railway station is 17 miles away at Gunnislake but if you are determined to get to site using public transport, you are probably better off taking a train to Exeter (33 miles away) and then taking a bus via Okehampton. However, the bus between Okehampton and the closest stop to site in Bratton Clovelly (a mile from site) operates infrequently (about three times a week) so careful planning would be needed.
