Small-scale, eco-friendly glamping on a working Devon farm, and the West Country coast nearby – boasting long sandy beaches and quaint fishing villages

Utter the words "proper camping" and you may start some controversy. Is it possible to have a genuine, camping experience yet still enjoy the odd glamping luxury like a double bed and fully equipped outdoor kitchen? Cheglinch Farm Glamping is an eco-conscious site that splits the difference between traditional tenters and over-pampered glampers, by providing off-the-grid seclusion in comfortable canvas – all set in a family-run working dairy farm, amongst North Devon's picturesque agricultural scenery.

To call Cheglinch Farm Glamping a ‘site’ is perhaps a misstatement. The space consists of just three, five-person Lotus Bell Tents, with views across the open meadows and ample space for kids to run free while adults blissfully relax. There’s no huge plastic playground or gaudy reception building, just a car-free sheltered field to connect with nature. "We wish to keep the field as natural as possible, with the minimum environmental impact," says the owner Ella. The small-scale atmosphere makes the place feel remarkably exclusive, with not a soul to disturb you, well, apart from the local family of pheasants, visiting deer, or dairy cows grazing nearby.

The tents – which are set upon wooden standings within their own dedicated 4-acre field – proper beds are made-up ready for your arrival and come complete with blankets, hot water bottles and a wood burning stove set just outside of the tent, to keep you toasty. Everything needed to whip up a good meal is found in each tent's private outdoor kitchen area, equipped with a gas barbecue, as well as cooking equipment and crockery. The eco-friendly focus continues with the ablution facilities, with a private composting toilet housed in a portable wooden structure next to each tent and quirky, private shower rooms within a wooden building across the field.

After soaking in Cheglinch's winning ambiance (be warned, it may take a while), you’re left with North Devon, in all its glory. For a secluded swim, the Victorian bathing pool at the Tunnels Beaches should impress, as it's reached by a network of tunnels, hand-carved through the Ilfracombe cliffs by Welsh miners in 1823. If it’s wilderness you’re after, nothing beats the desolate beauty of Exmoor National Park. With one foot in Somerset, and the other in Devon, Exmoor's attractions include wild ponies, glittering night skies – the lack of light pollution made it Europe's first Dark Skies Reserve – and endless walking routes.

The Owner Says

At Cheglinch Farm Glamping we aim to enable you to wind down, relax and get back to nature in beautiful rural North Devon, whilst still being able to enjoy your home comforts and the nearby coast.  Our luxurious furnished Lotus Belle tents will comfortably sleep four plus a little one.  They are equipped with proper beds, made up ready for your arrival, wooden cabinets and bistro table.  Outside you will find your own private toilet, shower room and kitchen area.  Our fire pits are great for toasting marshmallows but you may prefer the gas barbecue for cooking a proper meal!

The huge field really is a special place.  Sited on our working dairy farm, historically it was a wetland area. However, it has been sensitively drained, whilst maintaining small pockets of marshland which are great at attracting many different species of insects and birds.  Children love darting around in the longer grass, hiding behind the reeds and playing with the mud kitchen.  They can also collect the eggs from our farm chickens, meet our family of guinea pigs, watch the calves being fed in our nearby calf sheds and try to spot our herd of dairy cows grazing within the hamlet.  You are also sure to see the odd tractor or two going about their summer tasks.  Oh, and don't forget to visit the seaside.  We are a situated in a perfect location to visit North Devon's best sandy beaches.  Ilfracombe is just 3 miles away, Woolacombe a 10 minute drive and Croyde, Putsborough and Saunton are all within easy reach.

We hope that the weather is kind to you during your stay with us but if not you can always take shelter in our play barn.  Here you will find dining tables and chairs, a play area, fridge, freezer, washing machine, microwave and some electric points for charging your phone.

We are open from the beginning of May to the end of September.  In peak season we offer Friday to Monday, and Monday to Friday stays.  Off peak, we offer 2 & 3 night weekend stays (Friday arrival), 3 & 4 night midweek breaks (Monday arrival) as well as a selection of other short breaks.  Prices range from £55 per night per tent off peak to £105 in peak season.

Perfect for families

This was our first time staying under canvas and what a wonderful place to experience it. Ella provided excellent communication and information prior to our visit and once we arrived we were made to feel right at home. The facilities are superb. Every detail has been thought of, the kitchen is well stocked with all the equipment you need, the beds are very comfortable and the duvets are super snuggly. The showers provided excellent hot water and it was great to have the privacy of our own private shower room. Our children loved collecting eggs in the mornings from ‘our chickens’ and had so much fun watching the calves and running around the field and playing in the play barn, it is very safe for children and that made another part of it so enjoyable. We all felt that we had spent some true quality family time together, in the open air with all the excitement of camping but with the extra luxury of the wonderful facilities at Cheglinch. We would all thoroughly recommend you give this lovely place a try.

A lovely relaxing stay

We loved our stay in a beautiful lotus bell tent in a tranquil location surrounded by beautiful countryside and near the coast. Kitchen, shower and toilet facilities were great, the sports barn was a big bonus for the children. We enjoyed having fresh eggs provided by the farm’s hens each morning. Our hostess Ella was very friendly and helpful. Thank you so much.

Peaceful and brilliantly setup

We had a great stay. The tents are great - a fantastic size for our family of 4 - with comfy beds and lovely warm duvets. The whole setup was great and had everything we could have wanted. My children loved collecting eggs from our chickens every morning for breakfast, as well as visiting the calves and guinea pigs. Lots of thought has been put into making Cheglinch a great glamping stay, from the outdoor games and natural play area in the field, to the provision of solar powered fairy lights. Each tent has their own toilet, cooking area, shower and wash room, chicken coup and even a secure charging cupboard in the main barn. There is plenty to do in the local area too with fabulous beaches nearby and interesting towns like Ilfracombe (where there was more to do than I ever knew about). Ella was super friendly and on hand whenever we needed anything. I'd highly recommend a stay at Cheglinch Farm.

Perfect glamping

Ella and Simon have made their glamping experience so comfortable and have included lots of little touches to make it feel not too much like camping! Each tent has its own shower, toilet and kitchen so you don't have to share much with the other two tents but the one shared space is a real bonus - a barn with toys, a big table if you prefer to eat indoors, a fridge freezer and a washing machine. The field is lovely for running around, the fire pit is great for the evening and toasting marshallows and the lack of wifi and television mean that everyone can have a real break. Croyde and other beaches are 20 minutes away so it is in a great location for teenagers who wanted to surf all day.

Great experience!

Stayed for a week with my husband and our 2 month old son. Cheglinch Farm Glamping is located in a quiet beautiful field. There are 3 tents, each with their own kitchen, toilet, shower and chickens (who supply for fresh eggs everyday). There's a shared area for washing up and a barn with a shared fridge, freezer, washing machine and microwave. Each tent has its own cupboard (which can be locked) in the barn for charging mobile phones etc. The tent itself is huge and furnished with comfortable beds, bedside tables, a small table and chairs. Everything is catered for: there's coffee, tea, oil for cooking, pepper, salt, washing up liquid, laundry detergent, washing line, wood and a lighter for the camp fire, toilet paper, cot, baby bath. Everything is well maintained and clean. Ella is a very friendly and unobtrusive hostess. We can only think of a few minor points of improvement: a mirror in the tent area and a daytime light in the shower (for darker days) would come in handy, also it would be more hygienic for men to replace the current reservoir in the toilet with a deeper one. All in all we had a lovely holiday and would definitely recommend Cheglinch Farm Glamping!

Fab glamping and farmyard fun

The small glamping set up was great and made for a relaxed holiday. The children loved the animals and the site is set up with everything you could need for easy glamping. Ella and family are very welcoming and helpful. We would return here.

A beautiful place.

We went here last week with our toddler and it was fantastic, the host Ella was so lovely and helpful, the tent was beautiful and cozy with lots of blankets and solar lights. The kitchen well equipped and the showers/loos clean. The play areas inside and outside were an added bonus as were the fresh eggs every day. Our son loved seeing the animals on the farm and with only two other families on the site it was really peaceful and the location was great. We have booked again next year as we loved it so much!

Lovely hosts, nice spot, a bit on the noisy side.

The Glamping field was spacious enough for the 3 tents to have some privacy. The tents are very nicely decorated and the beds are extremely comfortable. The individual kitchens are equipped well enough but a water point at the kitchen would have been nice, as it stands you have to walk a few meters to get to a water point. Again the washing up point is on the top of the hill so the walks can get a bit tedious, up and down the hill. Showers were excellent with space to hang your towels and a washbasin. The play barn has a large fridge and freezer, no real atmosphere in the room, felt a bit bland, not a place I would like to spend an evening in. I suppose a goop option for rainy days but we most probably would stay in our tent which had more of a comfy feeling. Kitchens do come with washing up liquid and sponges, some emergency tea bags, salt and pepper, which were all very helpful. Loo paper is also provided. It is a working farm so you know you will have some animals and tractor noises however we could here machinery and tractor noise all through the night which was surprising, what are they doing ? You can also here the traffic from a nearby road which again is a shame when you thought you were in a quiet area. The lady host was very welcoming, relaxed and pleasant.

A comfortable and relaxing stay with a 15 month old

What a wonderful stay we had a wonderful stay at Cheglinch Farm Glamping in July 2018! Everything was perfect! The tents are comfortable and very cosy, we all slept so well. The kitchen was delightful to cook in and has (more than) everything that you'll need. The shower rooms are clean and unlike some camping facilities, you can have a really good shower. Plus it was really great not to have to take everything with you each day - as you have an allocated shower room you can leave everything there for your entire stay. The eco-toilet was clean and despite it being extremely hot, it never smelt and we weren't bothered with flies. Ella, the host, is delightful and made us feel very welcome and relaxed throughout. Our little girl (15 months) loved toddling around the field, playing in the sandpit and exploring the mud-kitchen, as well as talking to the chickens and guinea pigs, meeting the calves and finding all the books and balls in the playbarn. It was extremely child friendly and we felt very lucky not to have to think about or pack a high chair and travel cot, and for an extra cost, also hired our towels. This was our first camping/glamping experience with our daughter and although we were a little apprehensive about what it would be like, all had a very happy and restful stay. We wish Cheglinch Farm Glamping all the very best for the future and look forward to returning!

Lovely spot, great facilities

We are usually campers but wanted to try something a little different so booked two nights here. We absolutely loved the tents and facilities at Cheglinch Farm Glamping. The tent was spacious and the beds were comfortable. The gamechangers for us were having your own private toilet right next to the tent, drinking water tap right next to the tent, a well equipped kitchen (again - next to the tent!) and then a short walk across the field is your own private shower room where you could leave your toiletries overnight if you wished. The field itself is lovely, my kids enjoyed visiting the animals, playing under the trees and throwing the frisbee about. We meant to go out for dinner one night but decided to cancel and stay by the camp fire. It was too nice to leave. On the Saturday we went to Woolacombe beach which is pretty close. Stunning beach, all the facilities you could want for a family trip to the beach. We are already talking about booking another weekend here. We had a super relaxing time.

Fantastic

A glamping experience on a new level. Everything has been thought of and all you need to bring is your clothes and food. Every aspect has been covered, to make the experience of camping fun and enjoyable without having the hassle that camping can bring. All facilities are close to the tents, well put together and clean. All in all, an amazing experience that we will be doing again here.

Brilliant

I stayed there with my 2 children (8&10) for 2 nights. We all thought it was great, Ella had thought of everything u could possible need... extra blankets hot water bottles. The beds were so comfy, my 8year old wanted to “stay forever” 😂. The kitchen area was also like a home from home kitchen, again everything was thought of right down to tea coffee, salt and pepper. Toilet and showers very clean and no sharing 👍🏻. The kids loved seeing the chickens and watching the calves being fed. Everyone was Very friendly. The site was not to far from the beaches(10/15mins) and again lots to do near the site. Will def go back👍🏻😁😎.

Fabulous, wish I could keep it a secret!

We spent Bank Holiday weekend at Cheglinch Glamping - it was their opening weekend, so I was a little aprehensive but there was no need. The setting is just lovely, there are 3 gorgeous 'Lotus Belle' tents along one side of a huge field. The tents are massive, there was a double bed and 2 singles, table and chairs and still plenty of space. The beds are full size, really comfy with lovely fluffy bedding and pillows. There is also a box of extra blankets and hot water bottles should you need it. Each tent is on its own large pitch which also has its own compost loo (I was a little dubious!) but they were perfectly fine. There is also your own 'outdoor kitchen' which is lovely - houses the gas BBQ and all the crockery, utensils and cooking bits and bobs your can think off - it was very well equipped. At the top of the field there are 3 shower rooms with sink - these are huge and each tent has there own dedicated shower room for their stay. There is also an area to wash dishes etc and even washing liquid/sponges are provided. The setting is just lovely, on a farm - my children loved seeing the chickens, guinea pigs and calfs. They even collected their own eggs for breakfast. The location of the farm is excellent, just 10 mins from Woolacombe/Morthoe etc. I absolutely loved this place, we had the best weekend, and I can't wait to return!
