The Owner Says

Under the Milky Way is set in a beautiful rural area, nestled in about 5 acres of gently sloping and flat fields. It is a glorious sunny spot where the loudest sound is birdsong. At night there is no light pollution, so the stars really do shine. Our comfortable and secluded site is perfect for a family get together around a campfire or as an enchanting and romantic setting for a couple’s retreat.

The tent is lavishly equipped with a double futon style bed and two single air beds, wood burning stove, rugs, candles, solar lights, picnic table, camping gas cooker, cool box & icepacks, pots & pans and crockery & cutlery hopefully everything you will need kitchen-wise. There is no electricity, so though very comfy, you are camping complete with a campfire if you wish. There is a decked area outside for cooking and eating with a wooden shelter. The tent is easily big enough for four people, you could squeeze one more little one if need be - it would just be even cosier.

Each tent has its own private bathroom/toilet with underfloor heating, so you can leave your toothbrush here for the duration of your stay.  The bathrooms are only a short away from the tents up a gently sloping field. This is where you will also find the communal washing up area.

If you required bedding & towels, please choose as an extra.

It’s our third time staying here and we absolutely love it. Everything is spotlessly clean and tents and really well equipped. There is a large wooden shelter outside each of tent, which is brilliant for cooking and having dinner (and keeps everything dry in the rain). The private bathrooms are great and one of the main reasons we initially booked. Bridget the host is lovely and enhances things slightly every year. So much to do in the area too. Would highly recommend.

Perfectly designed for a comfortable & stylist outdoor break

Everything about Under the Milky Way has been rigorously thought-through, designed and built for maximum comfort, convenience & relaxation. Spacious, elegant tents equipped with dinky (and effective) wood-burners, each of which opens out into an open-sided, well-equipped cooking & eating shelter. Genius touch: the four individual toilet/shower/wet rooms (which predate the pandemic), one for each tent, along with washing-up sink and a freezer, again with one drawer per tent, where you can replenish the ice-packs in your dual cool-boxes. Bridget is a great host, super-helpful (and good company if you are inclined to linger for a chat). She'll run your luggage down to your tent in the trailer & delivers bags of logs for the wood-burner and outdoor fire-pit while you're off to the beach. Highly recommended.

A wonderful place for a weekend break

We had a lovely long weekend at Under the Milky Way staying in one of the tents. The tent had plenty of space inside and out, and the outdoor area was a great additional space (and very welcome in the rain!). We were provided with everything we needed for cooking and relaxing, and had a really enjoyable stay in a peaceful location. Bridget was a very friendly and helpful host :)

Lovely weekend getaway

We stayed in the shepherd's hut. It was bigger than we expected and the log fire kept us nice and cosy in the rain. The location was great and Bridget was very helpful. I would fully recommend staying here. The outside cooking shelter was perfect. They had everything that we needed.

4 nights here with my sons (7 & 10). Lovely quiet spot (aside from occasional night-time animal noises from nearby zoo😀), facilities clean & well-thought out, Bridget so friendly & helpful, easy access to local beaches & sights, lots of space on campsite for kids to play safely, pitches located far enough from each other to give privacy while overall layout makes it easy to interact with other guests, and a really good family vibe to the whole place. Boys verdict - 'best camping trip ever'.

Getting There

It's pre-booked stays only here and the campsite will send you precise directions 1 week before your arrival.

Owing to its remote location a car is certainly advised if staying at this campsite. There is a good bus service from Combe Martin village that links all the main towns and villages so it is possible to leave it behind at times, especially if you aim to visit some of the great pubs or restaurants in the area. The nearest train station is in Barnstaple, 8 miles by road.
