A charming glamping getaway on the North Devon Heritage Coast near some of the finest beaches in the south-west.

If your idea of Cool Camping involves escaping to a secluded countryside spot, then the fully furnished Bell tents at Under the Milky Way should be scribbled somewhere on your ‘to do’ list. Sandwiched between some of Devon’s finest beaches and Exmoor National Park, this eco-friendly site remains uniquely calm and well hidden from the bucket-and-spade brigade that takes over the surrounding coastline during the height of summer.

In a quiet, rural location, this grassy slope of land is surrounded by an enchanting woodland that makes for a very private place to spend a night. There’s ample space for families who want to throw a ball around, or simply kick back in deck-chairs while they wait for the BBQ to heat up. Only the twittering of birdsong breaks the peaceful ambiance, and at night (you might have guessed from the name) this site is a fantastic place to see the stars. With no electricity in the Bell tents (only candles and solar lights) you get an incredible view of the sparkling night sky, and if you’re still desperate to charge your phone, a plug socket can be found at the nearby communal washing-up area. Inside, the tents are spacious, comfortable and furnished with a wood burner to keep you warm on a chilly evening.

When you decide to venture from your idyllic isolation, you’ll realise that you're far from being stranded, as a wealth of attractions are within easy driving distance. Closest at hand is the village of Combe Martin (2.5 miles) with its own beach, a range of shops and some great eateries. Then, heading a little further, there’s a handful of other sublime beaches, many of which are bustling with surfers who flock to the Devon coast in the summer. Surfing is a theme you’ll find running through the area, and no more so than in the main harbour town of Ilfracombe, bursting with beachware shops and the centre for most outdoor activities. To the east lies Exmoor National Park, riddled with good footpaths, the trail along the heritage coast being a particular highlight.

Between outdoor activities and the family attractions (such as Watermouth Castle & The Big Sheep Farm Park), there's enough to tire anyone out, and as the night closes in, you can relax beneath the canvas of your very own Bell tent. With no turn-up-and-pitch camping, caravans or indeed anything other than the four Bell tents, you're almost guaranteed to remain undisturbed. The cost of this secluded location is the requirement of four wheels, but it’s a price worth paying to escape the crowds and enjoy this hidden glamping gem.

3 Bell Tents and 1 Shepherd Hut, each with it's 'own private bathroom'.

Our tents are furnished with a wood burning stove, 1 low level double bed with a memory foam mattress and 2 single airbeds, furniture, rugs and lanterns. Outside there is covered decking area for cooking and outdoor living complete with a gas camping stove, crockery, pots & pans and picnic table for you to enjoy alfresco living. Each tent is suitable for 2–4 people (or 5 if your children are all young).

The shepherd's hut sleeps up to 5 people in 1 double bed and bunk beds, there is a wood burning stove, rugs and solar lanterns. Outside there is covered decking area for cooking and outdoor living complete with a gas camping stove, crockery, pots & pans and picnic table for you to enjoy alfresco living.

Each glamping unit has its own private bathroom located a short walk from the pitch. This is also where you'll find communal washing up facilities along with an electricity supply to charge phones (there is no electricity by the tent, only candles and solar lights, plenty of which are provided). Plenty of outdoor space, safe from cars, for children to play around in.

The perfect relaxing getaway with lots of activities if you want!

An extremely comfortable glamping site with excellent facilities. The site is a little out of the way but within easy driving distance of surf spots, amazing hikes and great food. The walk over the hill (~30-40 mins) Is perfect for building up an appetite before dining at Combe Martin. Would definitely go again! Also, Bridget is lovely!

Ideal for our young family

A fully equipped and private little village of bell tents. Lots of space for children to run free, which allowed for us to sit and relax

What a fabulous place to unwind!

We have just returned from a wonderful 4 nights away 'Under the Milky Way'. What a great find! There were enough little luxuries to make it feel very special but not so many that it took away any charm of being in The Great Outdoors. Having our own wet-room was ideal and when travelling as a family of 4, made life so much easier. Furthermore, the cooking and seating area meant that even when the heavens did open a little, we could still (sort of) eat al fresco without the need for the tent being used. Bridget was very helpful and happy to share local knowledge. It was a great base for exploring set in beautiful countryside. We hope to return!

Great family break

Great place to stay! This is a well run and friendly site. Perfect location for both the beach at Woolacombe and for exploring Exmoor

Lovely spot in lovely Devon

A lovely find, cosy campsite nestled away in lovely Devon! Even though we had typically British weather the trip was fab! The tents and facilities were great and the owners were a lovely couple who helped with anything we asked! Looking forward to another trip :)

Delightful setting and posh camping at it’s best!

The tents now all have a wooden weather proof cooking and eating areas which are a great addition. This was a life saver when we had typical British May Bank Holiday weather. It meant cooking preparing and eating food in the dry. The kitchen area was well kitted out - two cooler boxes and the free use of freezer blocks to ensure food kept chilled. 8-10 provided with the use of a freezer so one can keep on freezing and using as and when required. Gas cooker was good too A BBQ was also provided and was plenty big enough to cook for our family of 4 who have large appetites Bridget and Gus were delightful - happy to share local knowledge, explain how everything worked and provide refills of wood for the fire and or fire pit, for a small charge Overall this is a perfect camping proposition as it is still camping but with a few touches of luxury - it takes away the hard bits to maximise the best bits of camping. Location is also great for Combe Martin, Woolacombe beach and many other tourist and not so tourist places. Allocated toilet/shower to each tent added a level of privacy and personal facilities. The grounds are a good size with plenty of space to throw hit kick and catch balls. The 4 units are well spread out and there is plenty of space The wood burners heat the tents up extremely well and takes the chill off the tent during the evening or morning. We had a fabulous stay here and wished we could have stayed for longer

Fantastic spot

We had a fantastic week at Under the Milky Way in July. It was our second visit. We love the set up of the tents with lots of space for the kids to run around. The tents themselves are well-equipped and the owners, Bridget and Gus, are so friendly and helpful. Under the Milky Way is a good base for surfing, kayaking, horse riding and exploring the local countryside and coast. We hope to be back next year.

Peace and tranquility

Our family with 2 little boys throughly enjoyed the glamping experience here. The site was well equipment and clean, the tents were not too close to each other and the owners were very friendly and helpful. The site is very close to lots of fantastic things to do. The only slight downside was the shower was lovely and warm but not very powerful. A things to do in the area booklet would also be quite helpful.

Under the stars is what glamping is all about.

We are a family of 4 (two boys 4,8) that had the pleasure of staying at this site in August and what a lovely stay we had! Bridget the owner was friendly and extremely helpful, her bell tents are fitted out to a high standard with all the things you need for a comfortable stay. The site is based deep in the countryside a few miles in from Combe Martin (4-5miles ish) Very peaceful, clean and best of all lots of fun!! Evening bbq's, fire pit for the marsh mellows and a comfy bed with a proper matteress for a good nights sleep. Nothing more needed!! Will most certainly be returning as there's still so much to see and do in the area but we ran out of time.

Loved it!

We had such a fab time, so lucky with the weather. We stayed in the Shepherds hut and the beds were so comfy, had the best night's sleep! Hut had everything you needed, in a lovely setting. Everything spotlessly clean and Bridget & Gus so welcoming and helpful. We lucked out and had the place to ourselves, and had such a good time we immediately booked to go again the following weekend :) Fab location, so close to Croyde, Putscombe and Woolacombe beaches. Local amenities down at Combe Martin. Our new fave weekend place :)

A little gem!

This was our first experience glamping, but we are seasoned campers. A lovely out of the way place, with a great welcome. The kids loved that they could runaround and be safe. The tents and kitchen area are well kitted out. Would definitely recommend.

Lovely stay

We have had a lovely stay, the tents are roomy with everything you could need, complete with a great wood burner. Only 4 tents on site which meant it was really peaceful and great to have your own bathroom. Bridget and Gus were really welcoming and as we didn't know the area offered tips on places to go. Thank you.

Beautiful spot!

Our first experience of glamping and we thoroughly enjoyed it! Loved the cosy tents, the wood burner and the peace and quiet of life under the stars. The BBQ and camp fire was great in the evenings too. Excellent base for walks in Exmoor and along the coast. We enjoyed the beach at Croyde, and the cream tea at Mortehoe!

A great few days watching the kids play "free range"

Lovely comfortable tents (even in quite bad weather conditions!!) with well equipped kitchen area and everything you need for your stay (even loo roll, which I didn't expect!). The tents are set well apart in Bridget's field/garden but you can't see the house as you are down slope. The loo/shower block was extremely clean.

The best part of the holiday was watching the kids climb trees/roll down slopes and make friends to play cricket/play football with. No telephones/devices/TV's in site - heaven! A real break away from it all but in close proximity of Combe Martin and Woolacombe. The Dinosaur Park at Combe Martin was a good day out for our children aged 3 & 6 years.

Hope to be back one day soon!

lovely spot

Super location, a charming and peaceful site. The tents were kitted out with everything we needed, hosts were very accomodating, and the children loved it.

The grounds are cosy enough to make friends, but spacious enough to allow room to play without getting under any one's feet.

Easy access to all the attractions in the area, including the superb Woolacombe beach.

Would certainly recommend to anyone considering a stay.

A fantastic introduction to glamping

Bridget and Gus were very welcoming, bearing with us as we got used to lighting the stove! Although the weather conspired against us (we came back from one day out to find Bridget cradling our torn awning!), we had a lovely time. The kids loved the site, feeling free to run around and explore, the beds were very comfortable and having our own private bathroom was very pleasant (plus the water was very hot!).  The location is extremely convenient for both Lynton and Lynmouth and Ilfracombe and Woolacombe.

Combe Martin itself is lovely with an amazing beach and countless rock pools, places to eat are plentiful at reasonable prices.

On the nights when the sky was clear, the site was exactly as described, under the Milky Way. We are absolutely planning to return!

Everything you could wish for.

We recently spent a week Under the Milky Way . The tent had everything we could wish for   and the facilities were excellent. Bridget was very attentive and checked on us daily to see if we needed anything such as more wood for the stove. The stove kept us toasty warm at night as the usual British weather for August wasn't the best. We found plenty of activities in the area to suit everyone's needs. On a clear night the stars are amazing to just sit and enjoy. A great week away so, Thanks again Bridget and Gus .

Relaxed Camping.

A long weekend of relaxing under canvas with the family in pleasant surroundings with everything we needed laid on. The site was quiet and secluded and the owners were attentive and nothing was to much trouble.

An attractive and peaceful location

We stayed here for a week in July 2014. I found it peaceful and relaxing. My two children, aged 5 and 7, had a lovely time and spent most of the time playing outside with friends when we were onsite - there are no cars in the camping field. The coast and countryside around Combe Martin is attractive, and the pubs all seem to have gardens and playgrounds. We were always able to find something fun and interesting to do.

Under the Milky Way is well run, with a light touch, and the facilities are as described. All in all, a happy discovery for us!

Wonderful peaceful and secluded website

We had a wonderful week here. The tents contain everything you need and are very comfortable. Beaches are a very short drive away and lots of other family attractions. The campsite is very secluded and it was wonderful sitting out at night watching all the wildlife (we had a regular frog visitor) and stars. The individual bathrooms were great and we had everything we needed. Bridget is very welcoming and we loved Woof the dog. I think our best recommendation is that our 4 year old daughter refused to get into her car seat and cried on leaving.

Peace and quiet in the countryside

We had a great five nights at Under the Milky Way. Bridget looked after us very well, driving our luggage to and from the car and checking on us each day to see if we had all we needed. We loved the tent and it was decked out with everything we needed, including wood for the wood-burner which kept us warm at night. Our little bathroom was clean and convenient. We would thoroughly recommend the site to anyone looking for peace and quiet. It was also well located for local beach towns. Don't miss a visit to Mortehoe which has fantastic views of the coastline.

A little piece of heaven on earth

We have visited for 3 consecutive years and have had the most magical experience camping here.  The location is stunning and Bridget and Gus are so welcoming. The area is full of adventures and good old fashioned family fun. Come rain or shine, the tents are very cosy, and sitting out in the evening looking up to the stars is good for the soul.  It is a privilege to spend time in such a wonderful place that just keeps drawing us back.
