A stylish glamping getaway for two with a wood-fired hot tub, fire pit and rustic outdoor kitchen in a tiny private woodland

Three-quarters of an acre of woodland, two people, and just one bell tent: Meriwood is a private glamping hideaway with impressive credentials in Devon. Tucked away in woodland on the edge of a tiny village in the Blackdown Hills, it’s a great place for a romantic rural retreat. With a fire pit, a wood-fired hot tub, and a rustic outdoor kitchen, you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve stepped into a Scandinavian fairy tale — and yet it’s just a five-minute walk to a traditional Devonshire pub.

Meriwood is hidden in a copse of trees beyond the owners’ house and, on arrival to their driveway, you might wonder if you’ve come to the right place for your glamping getaway. But, soon enough, Sarah or Giles will appear and show you the way to the little woodland wonderland they’ve created for their guests. You’ll walk through a tiny orchard and across a grassy paddock before you reach your private copse of trees.

Here, bedecked in neutral colours, is your bedroom in a bulbous Lotus Belle Tent and there’s your outdoor bath: a wood-fired hot tub in the trees. The kitchen, shower, and toilet are timber-and-corrugated-tin constructions. At first glance, the use of natural materials, the woodsmoke, and the trees give the appearance of a rustic camp suited to a woodsman from that fairy tale we mentioned. But look a little closer and you’ll see a softer, more stylish side: a well-made king-sized bed, soft rugs, fluffy towels, and delightful-smelling toiletries. Every element here, from fire pit to showerhead, has been carefully thought through to look good and function well in the outdoor environment.

Sarah and Giles escaped here from London and it’s likely that many of their guests will be doing the same. Those folk might be content whiling away the hours reading, cooking, and watching birds and butterflies in the dappled light of this leafy cocoon. But others will come for the location in the Blackdown Hills, close to the Devon-Somerset border. From here, you can explore glorious countryside and Devonshire towns like Axminster as well as the Jurassic Coast, Dartmoor, and Exmoor National Parks if you don’t mind a bit of a drive. However you spend your days, you won’t want to miss a visit to the nearby King’s Arms and you won’t be able to miss the stars that pepper the skies on cloudless nights. Millions of them twinkle above this three-quarter-acre wood where two people can have one very good time.

Inside the tent, you'll find a king-sized bed with linen, duvet and pillows, super comfy lounging chairs, and soft rugs underfoot. There's an electricity supply and plugs to charge your phone as well as a Nespresso coffee machine. Outside, there's a wood-fired hot tub (cleaned and freshly filled for you at the start of your stay). It takes about an hour and a half in summer to warm up. Nearby

Meriwood is located on the edge of the tiny village of Stockland in East Devon, in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The dark star-filled skies are one of the qualities that makes this area of Devon so special at night. By day there are numerous footpaths to explore in the village and further afield. Or you can head for the beaches of Lyme Regis and Charmouth, (14 miles and about 30 minutes in the car) or Exmouth (27 miles; 40 minutes), on the Jurassic Coast. Both Dartmoor and and Exmoor National Parks are both about an hour away.

Food & Drink

The Kings Arms (01404 881686) in Stockland is your host's firm favourite and, handily, within walking distance. Make sure you reserve a table when you make your booking as it can get very busy. The Cotley Inn (01460 62348) and The Tuckers Arms (01404 881342) are both excellent pubs too and within five miles of site. Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall's outpost in Axminster (10 miles from site), The River Cottage Kitchen, is a lovely place to stop off for a bite to eat and Millers Farm Shop (01297 35290) in Kilmington (five miles away) is the place to head to for stocking up on provisions, though there are plenty of shops in Axminster and Honiton (six miles from site) too.

Open

July–October.

Getting There

Meriwood is seven minutes from the A303, or about 35 minutes from the M5. If approaching from the A303 turn into Stockland Hill, and after approximately two miles, turn left towards Stockland. Follow the road until you come to the village of Stockland, take a sharp left up the small road, forking off just before The Kings Arms. Meriwood parking is at the end of the track beside our house. There, you will find a wheelbarrow to load your belongings into and it's a five-minute walk up to the the woods.

It's not advisable to use public transport to get to site as there are no connections to the village and there's very little within walking distance (just the pub) but if you are determined, Honiton is the closest train station to site. There is a taxi rank but it would be advisable to call ahead and pre-book a taxi if you plan to arrive this way.

Such a beautiful place!

We stayed at Meriwood for two nights this week (July 2021) and well, where do I start.. for a ‘camping’ experience without the yucky parts, it’s definitely the place to go!! Me and my partner wanted to try out some camping but then found this place. Every attention to detail is just incredible. When we arrived we were greeted by the lovely Sarah who explained where to walk and we headed up there with our bags. When we found the area we were then greeted with a bottle of bubbly, home grown flowers and a homemade lemon cake! So so thoughtful. We thoroughly enjoyed cooking our dinners on the fire pit surround both nights. We enjoyed hot and cold baths in the tub, and cosy fire pit evenings with marshmallows! And what better way to top the stay by being proposed too there too!! Would definitely go back, especially now it holds a special place in our hearts. We spent some of our time down Lyme Regis beach which is around half hour drive away. Thankyou so so much Sarah for such a lovely stay and we can’t wait to come back one day xx
